President Trump tells advisers that he fears prosecution if he loses the election: report

(Salon) With Election Day approaching and his poll numbers still flagging, President Donald Trump has allegedly begun to express concerns to aides about the potential criminal liabilities which may await him in a post-White House life.

The threats are broad: Trump's businesses are currently under investigation by the New York State attorney general and the Manhattan District Attorney's office for possible tax and financial crimes. He is also worried about the potential for new federal investigations, And according to a newly report from The New York Times.

Trump has reportedly expressed these concerns to advisers "for weeks." Aside from the known state and local probes, The Times did not specify which specific liabilities might have unnerved the president at the federal level.

The difference is significant, because presidential pardons only apply to federal crimes; they do not extend to state and local levels. The constitutional question of whether Trump would pardon himself before leaving office — which no president has tried — has simmered throughout his term. It even came up during Justice Amy Coney Barrett's confirmation hearings last month. ............(more)

Ballot processing begins in Detroit; 2 poll challengers removed

(Detroit Free Press) On the first day of absentee ballot processing in TCF Center in Detroit, police removed two poll challengers, including one man wearing a horror-movie mask and shouted that the ballot processing was “crooked.”

The man, who did not give his name, stood in line and identified himself to election officials as a poll challenger. Poll challengers, both Republican and Democrat, are allowed on site. Starting at 10 a.m. Monday, poll workers started processing — though not counting yet — absentee ballots from Detroit.

The man in the horror-movie mask had credentials to be a poll challenger, election officials said. But he started to cause a commotion, shouting the process is “crooked.” He wore a mask that looked similar to the masks worn by the villains in the movies "Halloween" and "Friday the 13th."

The man in the horror-movie mask yelled in the direction of poll workers seated at tables and then at police before being escorted out. A Detroit election supervisor said he was using racist language, referring to slavery. Detroit is 79% African American. .......(more)

Trump Caravan Attempts To Intimidate Black Voters But Fails Spectacularly

On his bully pulpit that he calls campaign rallies, Donald Trump has encouraged his supporters to “watch” other voters looking for crimes, joining a “Trump Army” to ensure that Trump wins the election in November. During a visit from vice presidential candidate and Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA), Trump supporters in Texas took those words seriously, of course, and began clashing and trying to intimidate black voters.

https://twitter.com/wxandnews/status/1322575404016803840?s=20

In one instance caught on camera, a caravan of cars escorted by police drove through a black neighborhood near where Sen. Harris was speaking, a place where black voters waited in line to cast their ballots. Those standing in line did not take well to the Trump signs and the attempts at intimidation, and they let the drivers causing problems know about it. ...........(more)

Michigan sees 'dramatic' increase in young voters casting ballots as colleges mobilize

(Detroit Free Press) Young voters in Michigan may be breaking some records.

Among 14 key states, Michigan has seen the most "dramatic" increase in young voters ages 18-29 casting their ballot at this time of year, according to an analysis released by Tufts University last week. The analysis found 9.4% of all early votes have been cast by youth this year, as compared to only 2.5% in 2016.

Nationally, more than seven million young voters have already sent in their ballots.

Michigan turned red in 2016, electing Donald Trump to the presidency by one of the closest margins in the country — an election where the youth vote had decreased. This year, Tufts University ranks Michigan 7th in the Top 10 states where young voters have electoral significance in the presidential race.

There are two reasons for the big turnout, University of Michigan professor Edie Goldenberg, who specializes in college voting patterns, said. ...........(more)

The Mess Created By Trump Will Be with Us for Years

The Mess Created By Trump Will Be with Us for Years
The U.S. president has damaged the political system so badly that it will be difficult to repair, even if Donald Trump gets voted out of office on Tuesday. The hatred and political discord he has stirred up will paralyze the country for years.

(Der Spiegel) Donald Trump Jr. doesn't want anything to ruin his good mood. Not the dark clouds gathering overhead on this afternoon and certainly not the terrible survey results that are sticking to his father, the president, like a piece of old chewing gum from the sidewalk.

Junior is standing on a podium on the outskirts of State College, Pennsylvania, and talking about the excitement that he is allegedly encountering wherever he goes. "This is 2016 on steroids," he says, as he looks out across a half-empty parking lot and the cleared cornfields of Pennsylvania. He says there are hundreds of people waiting outside and that he hopes they can get them in. Yet all he has to do is look a bit to the left to see that there are only a couple of stragglers waiting at the security checkpoint.

It's hard to imagine that even the president's 42-year-old son himself believes what he'll say in the next half hour. That his father will win a landslide victory on Nov. 3 and that his Democratic challenger Joe Biden shouldn't even be allowed to be president because he is on the payroll of Chinese businessmen. If there was anything to such stories, the FBI would long since have opened an investigation.

Nothing that he says is true, of course. There isn't even the slightest bit of evidence that Joe Biden has accepted any money from China. There is also no indication that his son was bribed by a Russian billionaire. And when it comes to the polls, they are currently showing that Biden will emerge victorious in next Tuesday's election. In an average of national public opinion polls, the Democrat has an almost two-digit lead over Trump, and his advantage in important swing states is also looking relatively stable, even if he loses a bit of ground in Pennsylvania in the final days before Election Day.

....(snip)....

It will take years to repair the damage that Trump has done to American governmental institutions. The president has fired five independent auditors responsible for investigating corruption and cronyism in government ministries and agencies. He has inflicted significant harm on the State Department, once the pride of the U.S. government. Important posts have been left unoccupied for years and those concerned about their reputations preferred to avoid working for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a loyal Trump vassal. Most recently, Trump fired the chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and replaced him with a researcher who has primarily attracted attention for his efforts to play down climate change. ............(more)

Why Clarence Thomas is a clear-cut case for impeachment from the Supreme Court

Why Clarence Thomas is a clear-cut case for impeachment from the Supreme Court
It is never too late to do justice

With the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett, the radical right has completed its long and painstaking project to seize control of the Supreme Court, and to reshape constitutional law for generations to come. Barrett's elevation will give conservatives a 6-3 majority on the court and usher in a crisis of legitimacy for the third branch of government not seen since the 1930s.

The right's triumph has prompted anger and soul-searching among Democrats and progressives, sparking calls to expand the number of Supreme Court justices, echoing Franklin D. Roosevelt's unsuccessful effort to add additional seats to the high tribunal in the midst of the Great Depression.

Enlarging the Supreme Court is entirely within the power of Congress, as the number of justices is not set by the Constitution. The court's composition has, in fact, varied over time, ranging from six justices when the Constitution was ratified to 10 in 1863. The panel was reduced to nine by an act of Congress in 1867 and has remained there since then by statute.

While Democrats should definitely demand court expansion if they retake the White House and the Senate and hold the House, there is at least one additional step they should take to address the court's legitimacy crisis—the impeachment of its most corrupt member—Clarence Thomas.

Thomas should be impeached on charges of perjury for allegedly lying in his annual financial disclosure statements for over a decade and, more fundamentally, for lying in his 1991 confirmation hearing about his disgusting history of sexual harassment. ..........(more)

Donald Trump Is A Down-Ballot Burden -- Even In Districts He Won

(HuffPost) SCRANTON, Pa. ― Two House races in Pennsylvania show the diminished value of Donald Trump’s brand as the president pins his hopes of reelection on another Keystone State upset.

A Republican up for reelection in a district Trump lost in 2016 is struggling to distinguish himself from the embattled president. And a Democrat up for reelection in a district that Trump won finds no political risk in publicly criticizing the president.

Rep. Matt Cartwright, 59, a Democrat up for reelection in a blue-collar swath of northeastern Pennsylvania where Trump won, is heavily favored in his race, despite a relatively liberal record that includes a vote to impeach Trump. While Cartwright has eschewed the rhetorical bomb-throwing of his colleagues in more solidly Democratic seats, he does not shy away from criticizing Trump on the campaign trail.

Meanwhile, in Philadelphia’s northern suburbs, Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, 46, won’t so much as say for whom he plans to vote in the presidential election. Unlike other Republicans in the Philadelphia area, Fitzpatrick survived Democrats’ 2018 midterm election wave thanks to some moderate policy stances and a broad coalition. But even with a cash advantage over his latest Democratic challenger and a family name that makes him political nobility in Bucks County, Fitzpatrick is locked in a tight race. ............(more)

If the word "Vapid" was a person.....

Ivanka Trump has compared her father to Winston Churchill at a rally in Ohio days before the United States presidential election.

The daughter and senior adviser to Donald Trump took to the stage outdoors in the city of Canfield and had the crowd chanting “four more years” as she spoke about the president’s likeness to “the legendary” British wartime prime minister.

Ms Trump said: “Winston Churchill said, ‘It was the nation that had the lion’s heart, I just had the luck to give it the roar.’” ...........(more)
