White Evangelicals Are More Likely to Believe in QAnon Than Any Other Faith Group, Poll Finds

(Newsweek) White evangelical Protestants are more likely than any other religious group to believe in the QAnon conspiracy theory that claims former President Donald Trump is fighting a global ring of sex-trafficking pedophiles, according to a new poll.

In the survey conducted by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), 27 percent of white evangelicals said it was "mostly" or "completely" accurate to say that Trump "has been secretly fighting a group of child sex traffickers that include prominent Democrats and Hollywood elites."

That percentage is higher than any other faith group surveyed, and more than double the support for QAnon beliefs among Black Protestants, Hispanic Catholics and non-Christians, according to data shared Thursday with Newsweek. ..............(more)

Trump and Pence 'yet to repair their relationship' after president turned on key ally over election

(Independent UK) Former US president Donald Trump has reportedly still not healed the rift with his once-loyal deputy Mike Pence, which erupted over the latter's refusal to support his boss’s baseless election fraud claims and the Capitol riot on 6 January.

The mob that broke through police barricades to storm the legislative complex that day had been fired up by remarks made by Mr Trump and his inner circle at a “Stop the Steal” rally in Washington, DC, insisting his election defeat to Joe Biden was the result of a mass voter fraud conspiracy his legal team failed to prove.

....(snip)....

As it became clear on 6 January that the vice president had no intention of attempting to overturn the result, chants of “Hang Mike Pence!” were heard to ring out across the National Mall among aggrieved supporters of the president, with armed members of far-right groups like the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers as well as QAnon believers among their number.

....(snip)....

The pair “discussed everything” concerning the events of 6 January during their final two weeks in office, the source said.

“He got his point across at the meeting afterward,” the aide said of Mr Pence, suggesting there were still hard feelings lingering between the two men, with Mr Trump refusing to say sorry. .............(more)

Trump Jr.: Just really, really dumb? Or really, really high? Or both?

?

Donald Trump Jr. argued this week that his father's impeachment trial is unfair because Democrats and their allies "insurrected" before Trump supporters did.

During a Wednesday appearance on Newsmax, Trump insisted that the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol does not "tie back" to former President Donald Trump.

Trump ranted: "By that logic, we would take the last ten months and you would take the billion dollars worth of damage in looting, in rioting, in arson, in murder that took place across the country with the (Black Lives Matter) riots and the Antifa riots and you have the words of Kamala Harris, you have the actions of their campaign bailing out criminals. You have the words of Maxine Waters. You know, get up in their face. Nancy Pelosi, everyone."

"We've all denounced what happened on Jan. 6," he continued. "No one hasn't. OK? That doesn't mean that then, by their rules, that they would be absolved of ten months of Jan. 6 that happened across the entire country. Right?" ............(more)

The right's hatred of AOC isn't just racism and sexism: It sums up the entire toxic Trump era

The right's hatred of AOC isn't just racism and sexism: It sums up the entire toxic Trump era
All the right-wing paranoia that led to Trump and Jan. 6 is visible in the exaggerated hatred for one woman

(Salon) Last week, on the verge of Donald Trump's second impeachment trial, Republicans and their hate media launched a coordinated attack on Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the New York progressive Democrat. Why? Because she publicly shared the emotional trauma that she and many others suffered during and after the Jan. 6 mob attack on the Capitol — and because she compared that to her personal history as a survivor of sexual assault.

As Salon's Amanda Marcotte observed, the "targets of right-wing mockery aren't usually people traumatized by car accidents or combat experiences, but people whose trauma is politically uncomfortable for conservatives." Such mockery is often "leveraged against victims of sexual violence, as happened when Donald Trump made fun of Christine Blasey Ford for her story of being sexually assaulted by now-Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh." Marcotte continued:

Mostly, conservatives who engage in victim-mockery tend to keep it in their own spaces (Trump attacked Ford at a rally, not a press conference) where they can high-five each other for their abusive behavior without drawing the attention of others who rightfully will be grossed out by it. But after the Capitol insurrection of January 6, this habit of reflexively mocking and denying the pain of trauma victims is being rolled out for a more national audience, as Republicans frantically try to minimize the violence of that day, looking to deflect from their own complicity in both causing and excusing it.

After Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., took to Instagram to detail her horrific experiences during the insurrection, the right-wing noise machine moved into action, deploying the usual sexist stereotypes about hysterical, manipulative, deceitful women typically employed to discredit victims of rape or sexual harassment.

These most recent attacks on Ocasio-Cortez — a favorite punching-bag of the right ever since she came to national prominence — are more than an example of bullying, crude and antisocial behavior. They are an illustration of how today's Republican Party has already embraced the worst kind of political deviance, and a warning of the even more extreme fascist and authoritarian dangers to come.

....(snip)....

The annihilation of emotion. Fascism in its various forms involves destroying the capacity for targeted groups (the enemy Other) to experience any emotions other than fear. Chronic fear in turn creates a state of learned helplessness and lack of resistance. .......(more)

Michigan's Dr. Joneigh Khaldun gets spot on Biden's COVID-19 task force

(Detroit Free Press) President Joe Biden's administration has tapped Michigan's top doctor to join a federal COVID-19 Health Equity Task Force whose goal will be to address disparities that have emerged during the pandemic in testing, cases, hospitalizations and mortality, the White House announced Wednesday.

Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, the chief medical executive and deputy director of the state health department, will join the task force that was created Jan. 21 to rectify health inequities associated with race, ethnicity, geography, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity and other factors.

“I am honored to be part of the COVID-19 Health Equity Task Force and to play a part in helping address inequities as they relate to the COVID-19 pandemic," Khaldun said in a news release. “The virus has had a disproportionate impact on our most vulnerable communities, including communities of color. I look forward to making contributions as part of this task force that will ensure that future pandemic responses do not ignore or exacerbate health inequities.” .................(more)
