(CNN) -- Canadian authorities are investigating reports that debris fell Monday from a troubled airliner and calls saying that the debris fell in southern Ontario, damaging vehicles.
The incident centers around Air Canada 1 flight, which took off from Toronto at 2:10 p.m. ET, destined for Tokyo's Narita Airport, with 318 passengers and 16 crew members aboard.
One of the Boeing 777 aircraft's engines shut down after takeoff, prompting the flight crew to follow "standard procedure" and return to Toronto Pearson International Airport, said Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick.
The crew requested an emergency landing, which Fitzpatrick said was standard because it gives certain planes first priority, though he also noted the aircraft involved is designed to run on a single engine if necessary. ................(more)

Cars jammed the parking lots, spilled over onto the lawn and relentlessly circled, searching for spaces. One recent Saturday at the state-run Charlotte Regional Farmers Market, Arlene Haigler could plainly see how a national trend had come home to North Carolina.
“We had 4,100 cars,” Haigler, the market’s acting manager, said of that late-May Saturday. “They parked in front of our office and everywhere.”
Fed by a growing interest in local food, residents in the Charlotte region and nationwide are flocking to farmers markets. Communities are responding by opening new markets or expanding hours, and vendors are responding by elbowing for sales space.
The number of farmers markets nationwide jumped 17 percent last year, with more than 1,000 new markets opening, bringing the total to more than 7,100, the biggest increase since the U.S. Department of Agriculture began tracking the category. North Carolina, with more than 200 farmers markets in 2011, ranked in the top 10 states for markets, the only Southern state to make that list. ...................(more)

(Bloomberg) A leader of a Mexican drug cartel was among four people detained for allegedly firebombing facilities owned by PepsiCo Inc. (PEP) in one of the worst attacks on a multinational company in the violence-ravaged nation.
Gunmen torched five warehouses and several delivery trucks owned by Pepsico’s Sabritas potato chip unit over the weekend in the western states of Michoacan and Guanajuato. A leader of the Knights Templar, a spinoff of the La Familia cartel, was among those captured, Guanajuato’s attorney general, Carlos Zamarripa, said on his Twitter account.
Over 47,000 people have been killed since Mexico began a pitched battle against drug cartels when President Felipe Calderon took office in December 2006. Michoacan Governor Fausto Vallejo said it was the worst attack against a multinational in Mexico and that such incidents scare away investment in his state, Milenio TV reported. ....................(more)

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Rape, sexual assault and harassment from male guards are a way of life for prisoners at an Alabama women's prison, according to inmates past and present, and the Justice Department is looking into the allegations.
Stephanie Hibbett spent a year locked up at the Julia Tutwiler Prison. She said in her time there, men had unrestricted access to the showers and bathrooms and would often make comments about female inmates' bodies, both to the women and among themselves.
She herself was a victim, she says. A guard kissed her and groped her breasts and buttocks while she was cleaning a trailer, she said. That sort of abuse was common, the 31-year-old said.
"A lot of it goes on in the middle of the night when no one thinks anyone is listening," she said. "I didn't sleep a lot. You'd see a woman get up and go into the bathroom and a guard go in after her and another one stand watch. Nobody would say anything. A lot were too scared." ................(more)

It's sure to be a little bit controversial but it's an extremely salient point: Chris Hayes, when discussing the meaning of Memorial Day, admitted that he feels "uncomfortable" calling deceased soldiers heroes. Not because they're not heroes, but because the term lionizes and glamorizes war. Hayes discussed how he feels "uncomfortable" with the term:
His guests, including John McWhorter of the New York Daily News, and Michelle Goldberg of the Daily Beast, and Liliana Segura of The Nation, agreed, but clarified the difference between honoring soldiers, and glorifying war. A great discussion for the holiday. Watch via Mediaite:

Apparently unable to find real activists, the coal industry paid astroturfers $50 to wear pro-coal T-shirts at an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hearing yesterday.
The EPA hearings, held in Chicago and Washington, D.C., were focused on the agency’s first-ever carbon standards for new power plants. The industry has adamantly opposed these standards, as well as standards on mercury — a pollutant that even Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) admits is harmful.
This year, coal is throwing around its weight by spending tens of millions of dollars on media advertising and political contributions. ................(more)

New expenses row adds to David Cameron's many woes
LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's first Muslim woman to hold a cabinet post fought back on Monday against allegations she had made improper expense claims, the latest in a series of public relations disasters to hit her political patron, Prime Minister David Cameron.
Sayeeda Warsi, a lawyer of South Asian origin who describes herself as a "Northern, working-class roots, urban, working mum", cuts an unusual figure in Cameron's Conservative Party, whose leadership is dominated by privileged white men from the affluent south.
Cameron elevated Warsi in 2007 to the House of Lords, giving her the title of Baroness, and when he took office in 2010 he made her party chairman and gave her a seat at the cabinet table. Her rise was widely interpreted as part of Cameron's drive to rebrand the Conservatives and broaden their appeal.
But the strategy risked backfiring after Warsi was accused on Sunday of claiming taxpayers' money for overnight stays in London during visits on House of Lords business in 2008 when she was in fact staying for free with a party colleague. ...............(more)
