January 6 report review: 845 pages, countless crimes, one simple truth - Trump did it

(Guardian UK) Whether fomenting insurrection, standing accused of rape or stiffing the IRS, Donald Trump remains in the news. On Monday, the House select committee voted to issue its final report. Three days later, after releasing witness transcripts, the committee delivered the full monty. Bennie Thompson, Liz Cheney and the rest of committee name names and flash receipts. At 845 pages, the report is damning – and monumental.

Trumpworld is a crime scene, a tableau lifted from Goodfellas. Joshua Green of Bloomberg nailed that in The Devil’s Bargain, his 2017 take on Trump’s winning campaign. The gang was always transgressive, fear and violence part of its repertoire.

Brian Sicknick, the Capitol police officer who died after the riot. E Jean Carroll, who alleges sexual assault. Shaye Moss, the Georgia elections worker targeted by Rudy Giuliani and other minions. Each bears witness.

The January 6 report laments that “thuggish behavior from President Trump’s team, including efforts to intimidate described elsewhere … gave rise to many concerns about [Cassidy] Hutchinson’s security, both in advance of and since her public testimony”. ...........(more)

Jan. 6 committee delivers whopping final report: Coup was planned months in advance

Jan. 6 committee delivers whopping final report: Coup was planned months in advance
Trump's team had "fake electors" scheme lined up well before the election, panel finds in 845-page final report

(Salon) The final report of the House select committee on the Jan. 6 attack, all 845 pages of it, is now in the public realm. It was released late on Thursday, so I won't claim to have read it all thoroughly in one night. But unlike the last highly anticipated event like this, Robert Mueller's ill-fated report, we are already familiar with the outlines of what it contains — and there was no Trump official, à la Bill Barr, spinning it for him in advance. So we are in a better position to judge the evidence for ourselves,

The report follows roughly the same organization as the committee hearings that began last summer, but with much richer detail. Those hearings rarely lasted longer than a couple of hours and were tightly scripted. That was probably the most effective strategy and certainly made for gripping TV. But the story of what happened in the aftermath of the 2020 election, as Donald Trump convinced most of his party and tens of millions of Americans that up was down and black was white, is a byzantine tale you can't truly absorb until you see it revealed in all its bizarre particulars.

The report is organized in eight chapters:

1. The Big Lie
2. "I Just Want to Find 11,780 Votes"
3. Fake Electors and the "President of the Senate Strategy"
4. "Just Call it Corrupt and Leave the Rest to Me"
5. "A Coup in Search of a Legal Theory"
6. "Be There, Will Be Wild!"
7. 187 Minutes of Dereliction
8. Analysis of the Attack

I'm pretty sure anyone who has been paying attention knows exactly which aspects of the coup plot those chapters are about.

Let's take one detail in Chapter 2 which validates reporting that Trump and his cronies were plotting the coup even before the election. Trump had been publicly indicating for months that he planned to contest the election if he came up short. In truth, that was his right, although there was no evidence of electoral fraud. But they weren't just talking about legal challenges to the election results — which Trump's team pursued, losing virtually all of them and failing to change the outcome anywhere. In fact, Trump's inner circle had been plotting for months to unconstitutionally overturn the election through the "fake elector" scheme. ..........(more)

Florida man, 18, accidentally shoots woman twerking at possible house party, police say

Florida man, 18, accidentally shoots woman twerking at possible house party, police say
Police say he still tried to get her number after the fact

COCOA, Fla. – An 18-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after police said he accidentally shot a woman, also 18, dancing with him at a possible Cocoa house party nearly a month ago, according to Local 10?s Orlando news partner, WKMG.

An arrest warrant affidavit shows officers responded to a shots fired call at 1044 Azalea Lane around 10:25 p.m. on Nov. 27. Upon arrival, police said they found a woman who had been shot and transported her to the hospital.

Multiple witnesses told police that the victim had been “twerking” near 18-year-old Maurqice Thomas when a firearm in his possession discharged and fired a round, striking her in the back, according to the affidavit. Another witness said the gun accidentally “just went off,” police said.

Officers said they discovered that multiple people—both juveniles and adults—had been given alcohol by the owner of the house, who was possibly hosting a party at the time. .......................(more)

Jan. 6 committee releases testimony of Ryan Kelley, two fake Michigan electors
On Monday, the bipartisan committee unanimously voted to refer former Trump and others to the Justice Department for potential criminal charges

By Allison R. Donahue, Michigan Advance on Fri, Dec 23, 2022 at 8:39 am

The U.S. House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol released 34 transcripts this week that they compiled throughout their investigation, including interviews with three Michigan Republican leaders tied to former President Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election.

The committee released transcripts of testimony from Ryan Kelley, former GOP gubernatorial candidate and far-right activist; Kathy Berden, the national committeewoman of the Michigan Republican Party; and Mayra Rodriguez, the Grosse Pointe Farms chair for the 14th District Republican Committee.

On Monday, the bipartisan committee unanimously voted to refer former Trump and others to the Justice Department for potential criminal charges, including inciting or aiding an insurrection.

Along with the indictment, the committee released a 154-page executive summary which states “the central cause of January 6th was one man, former President Donald Trump, who many others followed. None of the events of January 6th would have happened without him.” ...................(more)

Zelenskyy visit exposes a GOP rift -- between actual fascists and everyone else

Zelenskyy visit exposes a GOP rift — between actual fascists and everyone else
Too many Republicans still refuse to stand up for Ukraine — and for democracy — against their MAGA brethren

(Salon) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is widely popular, both in the U.S. and around the world. You'd have to be the most churlish asshole alive not to feel moved by his resolve to protect his nation's sovereignty against the egomanaical supervillain impulses of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has been waging an unprovoked war against Ukraine for nearly a year. Zelenskyy's Wednesday night speech before a joint session of Congress wasn't just moving. It was also persuasive on the brass tacks arguments. Military aid to Ukraine is "not charity," he argued, but "an investment in global security and democracy."

As Fred Kaplan at Slate argued, the speech "was a resounding success" that circumvented Republicans who previously had made noises about cutting aid to Ukraine. The Senate approved $44.9 billion in military, humanitarian and economic aid to Ukraine on Thursday afternoon, as part of a $1.7 trillion government spending bill that passed 68-29, and is expected to pass the House as well.

Zelenskyy's argument that Ukraine's victory is necessary to protect global democracy is hard to argue against. Especially in recent years, Putin has not hidden his contempt for Western-style democracy or desire to see it collapse around the globe. Even with all the caveats and nuances one could possibly inject into this, the "bad guys" and "good guys" are crystal clear in this scenario.

Except, that is, to some Republicans in Congress and a number right-wing pundits. That world is not just anti-Zelenskyy, but imbued with such vicious sentiments that even the most jaded political watchers were shocked. This isn't just about arguments over whether aid to Ukraine is being well spent, or about whether Ukraine is strategically crucial to U.S. interests. This was about full-on vitriol, to the point where even Republicans who are open to cutting aid to Ukraine were made uncomfortable.

....(snip)....

Jesse Watters of Fox News also rolled out the Russia-as-victim line, saying that Zelenskyy was "charming, but he's a killer" motivated by "vengeance."

Turning Points USA founder Charlie Kirk called Zelenskyy an "uppity foreigner" and an "international welfare queen." Over the weekend, his group had a conference where the keynote speaker on Sunday, defeated Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake, bragged that she was "a proud election-denying deplorable." Donald Trump Jr., unoriginal thinker to the end, also used the "international welfare queen" slur. .............(more)

A ravaged Quebec coast fights climate change by retreating

PERCE, Quebec (AP) — Against the ravaging seas, Quebec’s coastal communities have learned through bitter experience that the way to advance against climate change is to retreat.

Over the past decade, civilization has been pulled back from the water’s edge where possible along the eastern stretch of the Gaspe Peninsula where coastline is particularly vulnerable to erosion. Defenses erected against the sea ages ago have been dismantled, rock by rock, concrete chunk by chunk.

Forillon National Park, nearly 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Perce, removed a road that the ocean turned into heaving chunks of asphalt and scattered with boulders year after year as winters warmed and the shore’s protective sea ice vanished.

In Perce, a town of several thousand that swells with summer visitors drawn to the majestic seascape, a manmade beach was “nourished” with pebbles and given to nature to sculpt. After extreme storms wrecked the town’s old seaside boardwalk, a new one was built farther from the water and without the concrete wall that had only added to storm wave fury. ........(more)

Partial hand recounts of two ballot proposals validate election results

Quelle surprise!

(Detroit News) Unofficial recount results for Proposals 2 and 3 on the Nov. 8 ballot show no significant changes in the margin of victory for the constitutional amendments that allow for nine days of early voting and enshrine abortion rights in Michigan's constitution.

The results from the partial recount, which will be considered Wednesday by the Board of State Canvassers, indicate 116 additional yes votes on the abortion amendment, Proposal 3, among the areas recounted and seven extra no votes, for a net gain of 109 yes votes. The Proposal 2 recount results indicate an additional 14 yes votes and 20 no votes, for a net gain of six no votes.

The Proposal 3 recount encompassed about 626,000 votes across 500 precincts in 43 counties, according to the data released Tuesday, while the Proposal 2 recount included more than 59,000 votes across 47 precincts in four counties. ............(more)
