Yorkie Mom's JournalRussian hackers are laying the groundwork to spy on the US Senate, cybersecurity firm says

The US Senate was targeted last year by the same hacking group that broke into the Democratic National Committee servers during the 2016 presidential election, according to the cybersecurity firm Trend Micro.
The research firm found that phishing sites were set up by Pawn Storm, also known as Fancy Bear or APT28, mimicking the Senate's internal email system in an attempt to gain users' login credentials.
"By looking at the digital fingerprints of these phishing sites and comparing them with a large data set that spans almost five years, we can uniquely relate them to a couple of Pawn Storm incidents in 2016 and 2017," the researchers wrote.
They added that the phishing emails, while not advanced in nature, are often "the starting point of further attacks that include stealing sensitive data from email inboxes."

WTactualF? Deutsche Bank (which Trump owes millions) 1 of 5 banks exempted from punishments
https://twitter.com/davidsirota/status/950879275443412994
The Trump administration has waived part of the punishment for five megabanks whose affiliates were convicted and fined for manipulating global interest rates. One of the Trump administration waivers was granted to Deutsche Bank which is owed at least $130 million by President Donald Trump and his business empire, and has also been fined for its role in a Russian money laundering scheme.
The waivers were issued in a little-noticed announcement published in the Federal Register during the Christmas holiday week. They come less than two years after then-candidate Trump promised I'm not going to let Wall Street get away with murder.
Under laws designed to protect retirement savings, financial firms whose affiliates have been convicted of violating securities statutes are effectively barred from the lucrative business of managing those savings. However, that punishment can be avoided if the firms manage to secure a special exemption from the U.S. Department of Labor, allowing them to keep their status as qualified professional asset managers.

In the year leading up to the new waiver for Deustche Bank, Trumps financial relationship with firm has prompted allegations of a conflict of interest. The bank has not only sought the Labor Department waiver from the administration, it has also faced scrutiny from the Justice Department and five separate government-appointed independent monitors. Meanwhile, the New York Times recently reported that federal prosecutors subpoenaed Deutsche for bank records about entities associated with the family company of Jared Kushner, President Trumps son-in-law and senior adviser.
All of these interactions with the Trump administration and the federal government are transpiring as Deutsche serves as a key creditor for the presidents businesses.

New: White House Official Floated Withdrawing U.S. Forces to Please Putin
A member of Trumps National Security Council staff had a radical notion: to pare back American troops in Europe as a way to curry favor with the Kremlin.
A senior National Security Council official proposed withdrawing some U.S. military forces from Eastern Europe as an overture to Vladimir Putin during the early days of the Trump administration, according to a former administration official in the room with him.
While the proposal was ultimately not adopted, it is the first known case of senior aides to Donald Trump seeking to reposition U.S. military forces to please Putinsomething that smelled, to a colleague, like a return on Russias election-time investment in President Trump. The White House did not immediately respond to The Daily Beast's request for comment.
The official who offered the proposal, a deputy assistant to Trump for strategic planning, mused in February 2017 about withdrawing U.S. troops close to Russian borders as part of a strategy proposal to refram[e] our interests within the context of a new relationship with Russia, the former official told The Daily Beast, who heard this directly from the official, Kevin Harrington.
Harrington is the NSCs senior official for strategic planning. He had neither military experience nor significant government experience before joining the White House. But he had an influential credential: as a managing director for the Thiel Macro hedge fund, he was close to Trump patron and ally Peter Thiel. Trumps first national security adviser, retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, announced Harringtons arrival in early February as part of a talented group ready to bring fresh ideas to the table.

Fusion GPS is STILL doing research into Trump's ties to Russia, though it's not clear who's paying

But the work has not stopped. Fusion continues to look into ties between Mr. Trump and Russia, according to several people briefed on the research. Mr. Simpsons specific areas of focus, and information about any current benefactors, are closely guarded.
Glenns a relentlessly digging sort of guy, said Tim Burger, a friend and former colleague. If there is a document out there about anything, he will find it.
