Pennsylvania Democrats will not pay ransom

Source: CNN

(CNN)Pennsylvania Democrats will not be paying a ransom to unidentified cyberattackers, the state senate's top Democrat Jay Costa told reporters Monday.

The computers of the Pennsylvania State Senate Democratic Caucus remained locked after a Friday morning ransomware attack encrypted the lawmakers' server, and hackers demanded a payment in return for an access key.

This seems to be part of a worldwide attack that started in Europe.

********* IMPORTANT NOTE *********
Edited to add: My sincere apologies. The Pennsylvania story is from March. The British story is current and it links to the PA story, hence my confusion. The attack in Europe is breaking news. The PA story is not.

Edited to add: If you have a Windows machine make sure to keep curent with your updates! A patch for this was released in March.

I don't understand answers like that.

She votes for them because she believes that they're lying to her?

What is it that she really wants that she believes they will do? She must have some reason she votes for them other than her belief in their dishonesty.

The Rise of the Weaponized AI Propaganda Machine

Was AI used to manipulate the election? Could something similar be used to undo the brainwashing?

https://medium.com/join-scout/the-rise-of-the-weaponized-ai-propaganda-machine-86dac61668b#.htk5dt3kf

By leveraging automated emotional manipulation alongside swarms of bots, Facebook dark posts, A/B testing, and fake news networks, a company called Cambridge Analytica has activated an invisible machine that preys on the personalities of individual voters to create large shifts in public opinion. Many of these technologies have been used individually to some effect before, but together they make up a nearly impenetrable voter manipulation machine that is quickly becoming the new deciding factor in elections around the world.

Most recently, Analytica helped elect U.S. President Donald Trump, secured a win for the Brexit Leave campaign, and led Ted Cruz’s 2016 campaign surge, shepherding him from the back of the GOP primary pack to the front.

The company is owned and controlled by conservative and alt-right interests that are also deeply entwined in the Trump administration. The Mercer family is both a major owner of Cambridge Analytica and one of Trump’s biggest donors. Steve Bannon, in addition to acting as Trump’s Chief Strategist and a member of the White House Security Council, is a Cambridge Analytica board member. Until recently, Analytica’s CTO was the acting CTO at the Republican National Convention.
...
In the past, political messaging and propaganda battles were arms races to weaponize narrative through new mediums — waged in print, on the radio, and on TV. This new wave has brought the world something exponentially more insidious — personalized, adaptive, and ultimately addictive propaganda. Silicon Valley spent the last ten years building platforms whose natural end state is digital addiction. In 2016, Trump and his allies hijacked them.

I'm not sure if this is happening just in PA. I receive a letter questioning my registration status.

I received a letter today from "The Voter Participation Center" saying:

According to public records, no one at this address is currently registered to vote. If you have already registered at this address or are ineligible to vote, please disregard this notice. Otherwise, please fill out the enclosed form and mail it in the postage-paid envelope.

Most elibible citizens are registered to vote. As part of our ongoing voter registration program, we will continue to review the state voter file and hope to find you on the list of registered voters.

To check your current voter stats or to register online, please visit:
www.pavoterservices.state.pa.us

I've lived at this address for decades and have been voting all along. I voted in the recent primary with no problems. I just checked PA's voter website and my registration is active and correct, so I assume that I can ignore this letter.

But it bothers me because it could be confusing to some people. It could easily be mistaken for an official mailing from the government and only in small print does it state that they are a non-governmental organization and have no affiliation with the state. I'm wondering if it's intended to be confusing.

Does anyone here know anything about this org? Are they a right-wing group trying to confuse people, or are they sincere and well meaning but prone to occasional errors like anyone is? Do I need to be concerned about my registration?

Militants In Oregon Say They'll Leave If Local Community Asks

Source: NPR

Anti-federalist militants continue to hold the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge near Burns, Ore., as law enforcement officials keep their distance. But they say they're willing to leave if local residents ask them to, Oregon Public Broadcasting reports.

Read more: http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2016/01/04/461950205/gunmen-hold-federal-building-in-oregon-as-convicted-ranchers-seek-pardon

It sounds like they're looking for a graceful way out of this.

Edited to add: I'm starting to wonder about this story. No one else seems to be reporting this, and CNN just showed a video of the local sheriff asking them to leave. So they have their request from the locals and apparently aren't leaving.

New Michael Moore film: "Where to Invade Next"

http://www.salon.com/2015/12/25/michael_moore_just_exploded_the_rights_biggest_lie/

“Where to Invade Next” has a wide release set for Feb. 12, which is also Abraham Lincoln’s birthday and the week of the New Hampshire primary. Coincidence? Definitely not.

...

So Moore asked his distributors to get on board with a release plan designed to rock the nation: “I said …. give me a month or so to barnstorm the country, me personally, in a big rock ‘n’ roll tour bus, and we will criss-cross the country showing the film for free, leading up to the New Hampshire primary — because the issues in the film are the issues, the real issues, people want being discussed in this election year.” They may also have music and rallies along the way.

...

“Where to Invade Next” begins with the observation that the United States has not won a war since World War II. It then comically imagines the Department of Defense calling on Moore to step in and save our nation. His plan? Invade nations not to take them over, but to take their good ideas. We then see a hilariously ironic shot of Moore on a ship draped in the American flag and heading out on his quest.

Moore then embarks on a tour of a series of European nations and one in Africa where he finds society getting it right. From debt-free education to paid leave, women’s rights, prison reform and delicious school lunches, Moore offers viewers a world where people simply live better than we do here.

Imprimis Pharmaceuticals is making a $1 alternative to Martin Shkreli's $750 ripoff pill.

http://www.addictinginfo.org/2015/10/22/pharma-bro-about-to-lose-his-shirt-as-rival-makes-1-alternative-to-his-750-ripoff/
Imprimis Pharmaceuticals, making no bones about why they created an alternative to Daraprim that will cost just under one dollar per pill, released this statement on their website:

Last month, Turing Pharmaceuticals LLC, the sole supplier of Daraprim, increased the price of this prescription drug from $13.50 per tablet to a reported $750.00 per tablet. The FDA-approved label for Daraprim indicates that it is prescribed for toxoplasmosis and other types of infections. Toxoplasmosis can be of major concern for patients with weakened immune systems such as patients with HIV/AIDS, pregnant women and children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pyrimethamine works to block folic acid synthesis in the parasite T. gondii, the cause of toxoplasmosis, and leucovorin helps to reverse the negative effects on bone marrow caused by this mechanism of action.

Imprimis is now offering customizable compounded formulations of pyrimethamine and leucovorin in oral capsules starting as low as $99.00 for a 100 count bottle, or at a cost of under a dollar per capsule. Compounded medications may be appropriate for prescription when a commercially-available medicine does not meet the specific needs of a patient. For ordering information, please visit www.imprimiscares.com.
