Bruce Springsteen’s Song For Trayvon Martin (American Skin)

David Remnick reports for the New Yorker that a somber mood descended on Bruce Springsteen’s concert Thursday in Philadelphia as he introduced his next song saying “this is for Trayvon.”

He sang a version of his song American Skin (41 Shots), which was written after the killing of Amadou Diallo in 1999 by New York police.

Diallo was shot at 41 times. Four officers were in plain clothes and tried to stop Diallo because they claimed he matched the description of a well-armed serial rapist. Diallo attempted to run inside of his apartment. When officers told Diallo to show his hands he reached inside of his jacket to withdraw his wallet. One of the officers shouted “Gun!” and Diallo was then struck by 19 of the 41 bullets shot at him.

The officers were all later acquitted of any charges, which sparked a public outrage in New York City and other parts of the country, with charges of police brutality and racial profiling.

Illinois Lawmakers Push To Outlaw Sex With Corpses

It's the law you didn't know you needed. The Illinois House voted unanimously to outlaw sex with corpses and to make it illegal to move a corpse. If the bill passes, sex with a corpse would be a Class 2 felony with a maximum sentence of seven years in jail. Moving a corpse would be a Class 4 felony with a maximum punishment of three years in jail.

State Rep. Daniel Beiser (D-Alton) is sponsoring the legislation and says, "It's all out of respect for the deceased." Apparently there is no law explicitly banning having sex with a corpse and currently prosecutors charge offenders with "criminal damage to property."

“When you think of that, you think of someone going … breaking a mailbox or something similar,” Beiser told Illinois Statehouse News. “We obviously understand that isn’t adequate, that anybody who abuses or mishandles a deceased just demeans the meaning of that person’s life."

Expect the all powerful corpse-fucking lobby to fight this hard.

A clinic’s landlord turns the tables on anti-abortion protesters

A clinic’s landlord turns the tables on anti-abortion protesters

<snip>

But his tormentors crossed the line last fall when a big group showed up at his daughter’s middle school on the first day of classes and again at back-to-school night. They had signs displaying his name and contact information as well as those gory images of the fetuses.

<snip>

Soon after that, the harassing calls started coming to his home. By the dozens, at all hours. Friends asked him how they could help. He began to take down the names and phone numbers of people who made unwanted calls. And he gave the information to his friends and asked them to call these folks back.

“In a very calm, very respectful voice, they said that the Stave family thanks you for your prayers,” he said. “They cannot terminate the lease, and they do not want to. They support women’s rights.”

This started with a dozen or so friends, and then it grew. Soon, more than a thousand volunteers were dialing.

Boston City Council Unanimously Passes Resolution Supporting Investment in Our Communities!

Boston City Council Unanimously Passes Resolution Supporting Investment in Our Communities!

On March 28th, the Boston City Council unanimously passed a resolution asking the Governor and state legislature to implement tax reform that raises significant new revenue while protecting low and middle-income families and seniors from big increases. Such revenue is needed to invest in the locally-provided services that make Boston a world class city.

The resolution was sponsored by At-Large Councilor Felix Arroyo (pictured at right), with City Council President Stephen Murphy as the first co-sponsor. Members of the coalition supporting the Campaign for Our Communities have been talking with Boston City Councilors about this important initiative for the past two weeks. Mass Senior Action Council took a leadership role in this effort and received critical support from the Boston Teachers Union, Progressive Mass, SEIU, Mass Alliance, and the Greater Boston Labor Council.

Congratulations to all of those who worked so hard on this effort, and congratulations to the members of the Boston City Council, who clearly understand the need for more revenue to invest in our communities!

Bogus Trend of the Day: NYC Criminals Wear Yankee Caps!

Bogus Trend of the Day: NYC Criminals Wear Yankee Caps!
The New York Times discovers a spurious connection between New York Yankees garb and crime.

My diligent pack of bogus-trend-spotters started filling my inbox with their latest find last night as the New York Times published on the Web its report that many of the city's suspected criminals wear New York Yankee caps or garb ("Crime Blotter Has a Regular: Yankees Caps," Sept. 16).

Here's the nut graf from the piece, which the Times put on Page One of its print edition:

A curious phenomenon has emerged at the intersection of fashion, sports and crime: dozens of men and women who have robbed, beaten, stabbed and shot at their fellow New Yorkers have done so while wearing Yankees caps or clothing.

Breathtaking stuff, eh? But just two grafs later, the Times expresses why nobody should be surprised that some criminal suspects drape themselves in Yankee merchandise. While it's not unusual for a bogus trend story to recant its own premise, I can't recall one climbing down this quickly. The Times reports:

In some ways, it is not surprising that Yankees attire is worn by both those who abide by the law and those who break it. The Yankees are one of the most famous franchises in sports, and their merchandise is widely available and hugely popular.

Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) kicked off House floor for wearing 'hoodie'

Source: The Hill

Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) on Wednesday morning was asked to leave the House floor after removing his suit jacket to reveal a "hoodie," then putting the hood of his sweatshirt on his head to protest the Trayvon Martin killing in Florida. A photo of Rush can be seen here.

"Racial profiling has to stop," Rush said. "Just because someone wears a hoodie does not make them a hoodlum." Rush also put on sunglasses.

Rush quoted the Bible while presiding officer Gregg Harper (R-Miss.) repeatedly interrupted him, then asked the Sergeant at Arms to enforce the House prohibition on hats in the chamber.

The chair must remind members that clause 5 of rule 17 prohibits the wearing of hats in the chamber when the House is in session," Harper said after Rush left. "The chair finds that the donning of a hood is not consistent with this rule. Members need to remove their hoods or leave the floor."
