Damn I hurt. "And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County"

I went to school in S.E. OH and studied the coal fields and what they did and John touched me.

I know John has had his health issues but this just stings. I went to school S.E. OH
aka Appalachia and John's music touched me.

"And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the green river where paradise lay?"
"Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away"

skip

When I die let my ashes float down the Green River
Let my soul roll on up to the Rochester dam
I'll be halfway to Heaven with paradise waitin'
Just five miles away from wherever I am

Yes, this is all Trump's fault; David Frum counts the ways

Trump now fancies himself a ďwartime president.Ē How is his war going? By the end of March, the coronavirus had killed more Americans than the 9/11 attacks. By the first weekend in April, the virus had killed more Americans than any single battle of the Civil War. By Easter, it may have killed more Americans than the Korean War. On the present trajectory, it will kill, by late April, more Americans than Vietnam. Having earlier promised that casualties could be held near zero, Trump now claims he will have done a ďvery good jobĒ if the toll is held below 200,000 dead.

That the pandemic occurred is not Trumpís fault. The utter unpreparedness of the United States for a pandemic is Trumpís fault. The loss of stockpiled respirators to breakage because the federal government let maintenance contracts lapse in 2018 is Trumpís fault. The failure to store sufficient protective medical gear in the national arsenal is Trumpís fault. That states are bidding against other states for equipment, paying many multiples of the precrisis price for ventilators, is Trumpís fault. Air travelers summoned home and forced to stand for hours in dense airport crowds alongside infected people? That was Trumpís fault too. Ten weeks of insisting that the coronavirus is a harmless flu that would miraculously go away on its own? Trumpís fault too.

The lying about the coronavirus by hosts on Fox News and conservative talk radio is Trumpís fault: They did it to protect him. The false hope of instant cures and nonexistent vaccines is Trumpís fault, because he told those lies to cover up his failure to act in time. The severity of the economic crisis is Trumpís fault; things would have been less bad if he had acted faster instead of sending out his chief economic adviser and his son Eric to assure Americans that the first stock-market dips were buying opportunities. The firing of a Navy captain for speaking truthfully about the virusís threat to his crew? Trumpís fault. The fact that so many key government jobs were either empty or filled by mediocrities? Trumpís fault. The insertion of Trumpís arrogant and incompetent son-in-law as commander in chief of the national medical supply chain? Trumpís fault.

It didnít have to be this way. If somebody else had been president of the United States in December 2019óHillary Clinton, Jeb Bush, Mike Pence, really almost anybody elseóthe United States would still have been afflicted by the coronavirus. But it would have been better prepared, and better able to respond.Through the early weeks of the pandemic, when so much death and suffering could still have been prevented or mitigated, Trump joined passivity to fantasy.

Daily Kos: Sen. Perdue (R) bought PPE stocks the same day he was briefed on C-19

Republican Sen. Perdue bought a boatload of PPE stocks the same day he was briefed on coronavirus

Say what you will about Georgiaís Republican leadership team: They are corrupt and incompetent and terrible. Thatís mostly what I wanted to say. First you had Republican Gov. (and anti-democracy cheerleader) Brian Kemp dragging his ass on doing anything proactive to help his constituents during the beginnings and middle of the COVID-19 outbreaks in the country. Now, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Republican Sen. David Perdue of Georgia seems to have made sure he was able to wet his beak before the proverbial shit hit the fan.

According to the AJC, Perdue was a busy little bee on the stock market last month, with 82 transactions dated to March 3, 2020. This came a couple of weeks after the Senate Intelligence Committee was given a closed-door briefing on the potential of a COVID-19 pandemic. Sen. Perdue seems to have been following the lead of North Carolina Republican Sen. Richard Burr and fellow Georgian and Republican junior U.S. Sen. Kelly Loeffler, both of who dumped millions in stocks in the days and weeks proceeding the security briefing.

Like Burr and Loeffler, Perdue has already said that while this may look like a duck, walk like a duck, and sound like a duck, itís really a swan. Itís a swan wrapped in a flag with a red MAGA hat on top. In general, Sen. Perdue is the kind of arrogant, pig-headed elitist we have come to expect from the Republican Party, and also an untrustworthy narrator of his own story. For example, how prescient of Perdue to decide to buy no less than $65,000 in DuPont de Nemours stock on Jan. 24óthe very day of the security briefing. DuPont is a chemical company that supplies the kind of personal protective equipment (PPE) medical professionals are clamoring for across the country. Over the next couple of weeks, Perdue made sure to invest a total of about $185,000 in DuPont stock.

Coincidentally, Sen. Perdue also sold off shares of casino company stocks while buying about $50,000 worth of shares of at-home streaming service Netflix. The AJC points out that Perdue did also sell a lot of Krogerís grocery store shares, which have gone up with demand. Maybe Perdue just has just dumb luck ? Or maybe Perdue is just dumb, and was lucky to be in on the ground floor of a new scam in this ever- corrupt administration?

Trump 1/22/20 "And -- we're -- we have it totally under control. It's going to be just fine."

(For godís sake why is Trump still President? Get him the fuck out of there. This is all on him. England got rid of Chamberlain and brought in Churchill when things were going to shit. We canít wait until next year. Trump had warnings and fired the people who could have stopped this madness. He didn't get the W.H.O.'s C-19 test kits so he could run a grift on those and wet his beak by selling ones that he was invested in.)

Fact check: Trump tries to erase the memory of him downplaying the coronavirus

Facts First: From January until last week, Trump consistently minimized the risk the coronavirus posed to the country. He claimed to have the virus under "control," that the number of US cases would go "down, not up," that the virus might "disappear" through a "miracle" or something of the sort, that the virus might well vanish by April with the warmer weather, that the media and Democrats were overhyping the situation, and that "this is their new hoax," leaving it unclear whether he was calling the virus itself a hoax. (He later said he was talking about Democrats' coronavirus-related criticism, not the virus.)
Fact check: Trump tries to erase the memory of him downplaying the coronavirus

On Monday, Trump acknowledged that the situation is "bad," that the virus is not under control, that the country might well be heading into a recession, and that American life would not get back to normal for months. He had not made such statements before.
Trump has pointed to his late-January decision to restrict travel from China as evidence that he had always considered the situation "urgent." But he certainly had not clearly communicated that he felt such urgency.

Prior to the World Health Organization's official pandemic declaration on March 11, Trump had never told Americans that he viewed the situation as a potential pandemic. When he was asked by CNBC in an interview that aired January 22 if there were worries about a pandemic, he responded, "No. Not at all. And -- we're -- we have it totally under control. It's one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It's going to be just fine."

On March 9, Trump tweeted, "So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!" On March 10, the day before the WHO's pandemic declaration, Trump said, "And we're prepared, and we're doing a great job with it. And it will go away. Just stay calm. It will go away."

He added: "It's really working out. And a lot of good things are going to happen."
