Low-income Wisconsin families won’t be able to buy shellfish with food stamps, and will have a much harder time getting basics like dried beans, pasta sauce, and cooking spices into their kitchens, under the latest state-level Republican proposal to tighten the government’s grip on the poor.
A bill proposed by state Rep. Robert Brooks (R) would ban stores from accepting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) cards for lobster, shrimp, and any other form of shellfish, and set a long list of additional rules for the first two-thirds of a recipient’s monthly spending. Lawmakers held a committee hearing Thursday on the bill, which would require a federal waiver to implement.
An average of 420,000 households received SNAP each month in Wisconsin in 2014. The average recipient household got $220 per month from the program last year. Brooks’ restrictions would apply to all but $72.60 per month for the average household affected. And even that amount could not be spent on any form of shellfish.

GOP House Leaders Create ‘Action Group’ To Seize And Sell America’s Public Lands

A group of Republican congressmen this week took an aggressive step in a campaign to seize and sell off America’s national forests and other public lands.
In launching what they are calling the “Federal Land Action Group,” Rep. Chris Stewart (R-UT) and Rep. Rob Bishop (R-UT) plan to develop a legislative framework for giving states control of America’s public lands. Calling the federal government a “lousy landlord for western states,” Rep. Stewart said “we simply think the states can do it better.”
Bishop, who is also chair of the House Natural Resources Committee, said that “this group will explore legal and historical background in order to determine the best congressional action needed to return these lands back to the rightful owners.”
This latest effort to transfer or dispose of national forests and public lands was immediately blasted by Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), the ranking member on the House Natural Resources Committee, as being unwise, unpopular, and illegal.

Formerly known as Vivendi Universal, Veolia is the largest water privatization business in the world, and has come under attack by water rights activists for many of its contracts that reveal consistent prioritization of private profit at the expense of the environment and the public interest. Veolia is infamous for water privatization, mismanagement, and corruption around the world. Worldwide consumers of Veolia’s privatized water have experienced high prices, poor service, limited oversight and the discouragement of water conservation efforts in their communities. Veolia’s privatization in Puerto Rico was considered a world-class consumer disaster. The British Environmental Agency listed Veolia as the second worst polluter in Britain. From Africa to Latin America and Asia to Eastern Europe, Veolia’s drive to privatize water has left a trail of debt, destruction and growing opposition, while avoiding countries with the greatest water access needs.
Veolia has an extensive history of questionable environmental practices. In Indianapolis, the company’s lack of safeguards led to a “boil water” advisory for more than a million people, forcing local businesses to close and school to be canceled for 40,000 students. In Kentucky, Veolia’s cost-cutting led to diesel contamination of the water supply, after the company deemed that the equipment to remove the fuel was too expensive to operate. In Illinois, a Veolia subsidiary operating a hazardous waste incinerator for more than 10 years was fined more than $3 million for small explosions that released toxic chemicals, including carcinogenic dioxins, into the air. In Ohio, a Veolia Environmental Services plant housing several 200,000-gallon chemical tanks exploded in 2009, injuring workers and damaging more than a dozen homes.
Veolia Energy currently manages wastewater from hydraulic fracturing for natural gas and oil. This highly toxic byproduct of fracking contains carcinogenic chemicals and has been found to be radioactive. Given Veolia’s track record, its plan to discharge some of the water back to local waterways should be cause for considerable concern.

Explosive 2009 report from Tulsa reveals deep corruption concerning Deputy Bob Bates

This is a smoking gun concerning the millionaire Tulsa Reserve Deputy Bob Bates who shot and killed Eric Harris in March:
CBS News learned that in 2009, the Tulsa Sheriff's Office launched an internal investigation to find out if Bates received special treatment during training and while working as a reserve deputy. They also investigated whether supervisors pressured training officers on Bates' behalf.
The investigation concluded Bates' training was questionable and that he was given preferential treatment.
The investigation found that deputies voiced concerns about Bates' behavior in the field, almost from the very beginning. Bates reportedly used his personal car while on duty and made unauthorized vehicle stops. When confronted Bates said that he could do what he wanted, and that anyone who had a problem with him should go see the sheriff.

Johnson Introduces Bill to Protect Americans from Further Damaging Effects of Obamacare: Preserving

WASHINGTON — Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), along with 29 of his Senate colleagues, introduced a bill Monday that will prevent Americans from being victimized again by Obamacare if the Supreme Court follows the law and rules against the Obama administration this summer in King v. Burwell.
Senator Johnson’s bill is named “Preserving Freedom and Choice in Health Care” and it would do just that. Millions of Americans lost their health care because of Obamacare’s mandates. Those individuals, together with millions more, would suffer again if the court rules that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act prevents subsidies from being paid through federal exchanges. Such a ruling is consistent with the law, but it would leave those Americans unable to pay for expensive Obamacare coverage that is affordable only when it is subsidized by hardworking taxpayers.
“This bill is a first step toward reversing the damage that Obamacare has inflicted on the American health care system,” said Senator Johnson. “It begins to replace Obamacare’s expensive mess with patient-focused, market-based reforms.”

In his college, the largest at the university, a faculty hiring freeze will mean 48 open faculty jobs and 44 open staff jobs go unfilled in the next year. That translates to 320 fewer courses that will be offered the year of 2016-2017 and 9,000 students who will miss out on a class spot they otherwise would have had.
Programs would be cut or restructured in agriculture, the arts and technology, Blank said in her statement without offering details
Wisconsin Republicans introduce bill to require photo IDs for food stamp recipients

Food stamp recipients in Wisconsin would be required to use photo ID cards for their purchases under a bill being proposed by two Republican lawmakers.
Rep. Jesse Kremer, R-Kewaskum, says the proposal is an effort to crack down on waste, fraud and abuse and to make programs like FoodShare more efficient. But detractors say it would shame those living in poverty, with no discernible benefit.
The bill, currently being circulated for co-sponsorship, would require the state Department of Health Services to submit an implementation plan to the U.S. Department of Agriculture for approval to issue electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards with photo identification to participants in FoodShare, the state's successor to the food stamps program. Sen. Steve Nass, R-Whitewater, is the Senate's lead sponsor.
It would also require DHS to submit a waiver request to the USDA, to allow DHS to require FoodShare recipients to show their photo EBT card when making purchases.

A dog's life: study reveals people's hormonal link with tail-waggers

(Reuters) - Dogs are called "man's best friend" - women's, too - and scientists say the bond between people and their pooches may be deeper than you might think.
Researchers in Japan said on Thursday oxytocin, a hormone that among other things helps reinforce bonds between parents and their babies, increases in humans and their dogs when they interact, particularly when looking into one another's eyes.
They described a series of experiments that suggest that people and their canine companions have mutually developed this instinctual bonding mechanism in the thousands of years since dogs were first domesticated.
Sometimes called the "love hormone," oxytocin is made in a brain structure called the hypothalamus and secreted from the pituitary gland. It is involved in emotional bonding, maternal behavior, child birth, breast-feeding, sexual arousal and other functions.

Court upholds dismissal of Sen. Johnson's health care suit

CHICAGO (AP) -- A federal appeals court in Chicago has upheld a lower court ruling that tossed U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson's challenge to the federal health care overhaul.
Tuesday's unanimous opinion says the Wisconsin Republican has no standing to sue because he hasn't shown how executive rules adopted after President Barack Obama's reform harmed him personally.
7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals specifically rejected Johnson's contention that his reputation was diminished because the rules gave his own staffers exclusive benefits that his Wisconsin constituents weren't entitled to receive.
The three-judge panel says it couldn't see how Johnson's reputation "could be sullied or his electability diminished by being offered, against his will, a benefit that he then decided to refuse."
