Measles is back: A mother's story, from today's LA Times:

I know that parents worry about whether vaccines are safe for their children. But they should also consider the dangers of not vaccinating, which is why I'm telling my family's story.

In 1970, on a Fulbright cultural exchange, my husband and I moved to the Midlands of England with our 5-year-old daughter and 10-month-old son. Our daughter had received all her vaccinations, but our son was too young for his measles shot when we left home. Our pediatrician wasn't worried. "Just get it there in a few months," he said.

But when we asked about the inoculation after our arrival, the English pediatrician said, "We don't do those."
In the back seat, our son lay on my lap. Quietly, he stopped breathing and turned blue. -

A few months into our stay, when our son was 13 months old, he and his sister were playing at a friend's house. Mothers and kids were talking and laughing when the host boy, Ian, gave an enormous sneeze, and our toddler marched right through the cloud.

****WCGreen Update -- Sunday, September 14, 2014****

From his wife:

A Christopher Green update:

My computer was purged of its viruses and gone for quite a while and I cannot see how to post on my IPOD. When I got my computer back, it installed updates and I can post on Facebook again.

Chris moved to the J building from the G building, because they wanted to put all the lung transplant patients together. What a room! He is in the Miller building that is that swath of glass, right in the front, so his view is of the fountains. He has a huge TV and lots of room. It is in J 5-1. He has begun being on the trac collar and oxygen only 24/7 and for over a week! It is amazing! They told me his diaphragm was not working, so either it began to work or his lungs have taken up the slack.

Last Friday, he had a scare, and wound up in the ICU. He is fine and probably going back 5-1 soon, just not to the same room. They couldn't save it.
He is on the respirator to rest, but also on the trac collar more and more.

****WCGreen Update --Wednesday August 13, 2014****

From his wife:

A Christopher Green update:

Chris has now been talking with the special piece that goes into his trach, so he is NOT on the respirator! Just some oxygen. (I call it the talking stick). This means he is either using his diaphragm or muscles in his lungs have stepped up. He sounds like Chris!

When he is too tired or it's harder to breathe, he goes back on the respirator. This is so exciting! Who would have thought this earlier?

I am very happy to announce the publication of two of my poems in Decanto!

It's a poetry magazine/anthology out of England.

eyes rimmed red
gritty sand down the throat
shallow breaths
muscle ache–
in my lower back
nothing looks
the walls are skewed
pictures rattle
inside their bent

the music is off-key

Clearly waiting no distractions

I see nothing else

My mind is focused

There is silence

calm alertness

Till I have my arms around you
