ATLANTA – U.S. Rep. John Lewis today released the following statement:

“I have been in some kind of fight - for freedom, equality, basic human rights - for nearly my entire life. I have never faced a fight quite like the one I have now.

This month in a routine medical visit, and subsequent tests, doctors discovered Stage IV pancreatic cancer. This diagnosis has been reconfirmed.

While I am clear-eyed about the prognosis, doctors have told me that recent medical advances have made this type of cancer treatable in many cases; that treatment options are no longer as debilitating as they once were; that I have a fighting chance.

So I have decided to do what I know to do; what I have always done: I am going to fight it, and keep fighting for the Beloved Community. We still have bridges to cross.

To my constituents: Being your representative in Congress is the honor of a lifetime. I will return to Washington in coming days to continue our work and begin my treatment plan, which will occur over the next several weeks. I may miss a few votes during this period, but with God’s grace I will be back on the front lines soon.

Please keep me in your prayers as I begin this journey.”

“President Trump has installed a room-sized ‘golf simulator’ game at the White House, which allows him to play virtual rounds at courses all over the world by hitting a ball into a large video screen,” the Washington Post reports.

“That system replaced an older, less sophisticated golf simulator that had been installed under President Obama… Trump’s system cost about $50,000, and was put in during the last few weeks in a room in his personal quarters.”

President’s actions shameful
To the editor:

For me, Veterans Day is not only a day of remembrance but also a day of appreciation and great sadness. I am proud that we as a people have chosen to honor those we have lost. Proud also that we continue to honor all veterans, especially those who carry physical and mental scars as a result of their service to our country. I am heartened by the fact that the people of our nation do not forget -- even if the leader of our country can not be bothered!

As someone who served for more than 30 years, I was appalled and disgusted by the actions of President Trump this past week. I was appalled when he bypassed honoring those who died in the Battle of Belleau Wood during World War I, but was shocked
even more when he ignored my brothers and sisters at Arlington National Cemetery on Veterans Day. His excuses were as believable as his draft dodging heel spurs!

Shame on you, Mr. President.

What I love about Northern Virginia

I am sitting in la Madeleine, a French bistro watching a young lady in a hijab speaking to her co-workers in Spanish. An additional co-worker comes in with some type of home made Salvadoran sweet bread that she is sharing and they all seem to enjoy.

There is a sense of community, all hard at work early in the morning, enjoying each other’s company. It is nice to see.

Congresswoman Tsongas to retire

US Representative Niki Tsongas said Wednesday she will not seek another term in Congress.
“I feel it is a good time to go,’’ she told the Globe as she prepared to release a statement announcing her decision.
The Lowell Democrat was elected to the seat that was being vacated in 2007 by then-US representative Marty Meehan. She serves on the US House Armed Services Committee, where she has worked on sexual abuse and veterans issues.
