Newt once proposed a law that would put anyone who brought more than 2oz of pot in the US to death.

On Saturday’s edition of “Up With Chris Hayes,” Gary Johnson brought up an old Newt Gingrich idea I hadn’t heard before: Putting individuals who brought more than two ounces of marijuana into the United States to death. That sounded extreme, even for Gingrich. So I looked it up. And sure enough, there it is: “The Drug Importer Death Penalty Act of 1996.” What makes the bill even more amazing is that Gingrich himself is a confessed pot smoker. When he was young, he said, experimenting with drugs “was a sign we were alive and in graduate school in that era.”

Kansas slashes food aid for children of illegal immigrants (Children US Born)

Pedro moved to the Kansas City area about 13 years ago and has held the same job for 11.

Though he sometimes struggles to pay bills, he knows most people think he should receive no public aid. He’s an illegal immigrant. He doesn’t deserve handouts. He understands that.

“I’ve never asked for anything for myself,” said Pedro, who didn’t want his last name used to protect his family. “Never. I just work. Work hard.”

A new debate swirling around Kansas, though, isn’t about Pedro. It’s about two of his three children. They were born here, and one day they will have driver’s licenses and the right to vote, just like any other U.S. citizen.

Singing legend Etta James dies at 73

(CNN) -- Etta James, whose assertive, earthy voice lit up such hits as "The Wallflower," "Something's Got a Hold on Me" and the wedding favorite "At Last," has died, according to her longtime friend and manager, Lupe De Leon. She was 73.

She died from complications from leukemia with her husband, Artis Mills, and her sons by her side, De Leon said.
She was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010, and also suffered from dementia and hepatitis C. James died at a hospital in Riverside, California.

She would have turned 74 Wednesday.

" This is a tremendous loss for the family, her friends and fans around the world," De Leon said. "She was a true original who could sing it all -- her music defied category.

Santorum Staffer Says Women Shouldn’t Be President Because It’s Against God’s Will

In an article about the reasons Rep. Michele Bachmann’s campaign fizzled, the Des Moines Register points to “sexism among conservatives,” singling out an offensive email written by a staffer to Rick Santorum:

Rival presidential candidate Rick Santorum’s Iowa coalitions director, Jamie Johnson, sent out an email saying that children’s lives would be harmed if the nation had a female president. [...]

“The question then comes, ‘Is it God’s highest desire, that is, his biblically expressed will, … to have a woman rule the institutions of the family, the church, and the state?’ ” Johnson’s email said.

German Hackers Are Building a DIY Space Program to Put Their Own Uncensored Internet into Space

Syncom 1, the First Geosynchronous Satellite What NASA could do in the 1960s, we can do now. At least, that's the line of thought underpinning the Hackerspace Global Grid, a project that aims to build a space-based network of communications satellites that would freely provide uncensored Internet to users on the ground, taking the power of censorship out of the hands of governments. NASA

There’s more than one way to stick it to The Man. There’s civil disobedience, subversive propaganda, political art, outright violent revolt--each possessing its own degree of difficulty and consequence. In a decidedly 21st-century twist, team of German hackers bent on fighting the powers that be has chosen a rather ambitious means of taking the power back: building a hacker-owned and -operated space program, complete with a constellation of communications satellites beaming uncensored Internet to users on the ground.

The Hackerspace Global Grid was borne out of a call to action at the Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin, where hackers of all stripes gather to mull the issues of the day as they relate to their craft. Hacker activist Nick Farr--motivated by legislation like the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S.--called on the community to contribute to a project that would remove the power of censorship from governments and corporations by creating an uncensored Internet in the free frontier of space.

Brownback hopes to boost fracking in Kansas

Gov. Sam Brownback, on his way to the Cotton Bowl in Texas this week, stopped in Oklahoma City and met with leaders of two energy companies, SandRidge and Chesapeake, looking to smooth the way for energy companies to do more hydraulic fracturing in Kansas.

Fracking, as the process is commonly called, is spreading fast across the country and allows the extraction of more oil and gas. It is new and home-grown energy and it creates jobs, Brownback Chief of Staff David Kensinger told Wichita’s Pachyderm Club on Friday.

Kensinger said the process is already in use in Harper and other counties and could bring 25,000 new jobs to the state and significantly boost the state economy. The governor will announce more details soon.

“It’s making people a lot of money and creating a lot of jobs elsewhere,” Kensinger said. On other issues, Kensinger said:

Kansas is a mess. After spending loads of time and money to get Boeing of Wichita a fat government contract with the promise of more jobs in Kansas - Boeing is bailing out of Kansas.

I'm guessing Brownbeck is looking to make up for all those lost jobs.
