Norway watches warily as Russian subs and aircraft step up Arctic patrols

Source: NBC news

ABOARD THE KV SORTLAND — NATO ally Norway has announced that it is boosting the number of naval patrols near vital undersea gas pipelines off its coast, and released a trove of videos exclusively to NBC News illustrating what it sees as a growing Russian threat in the Arctic.

The videos provided by the Royal Norwegian Air Force capture the high-stakes cat-and-mouse game between the two militaries, with Russian attack submarines patrolling near a maze of undersea pipelines carrying vast amounts of natural gas to Europe and telecommunication cables linking Europe and America.
According to the head of the Royal Norwegian Navy, the videos indicate that Russian attack submarines and planes have expanded their presence in the High North, operating near Norway’s natural gas pipelines that represent a vital energy lifeline for Europe.

“We’ve seen increased military activity around Norway in the High North, in the North Atlantic. We have seen Russian submarines operating differently than they did 10 years ago,” Rear Adm. Rune Andersen said last week from the bridge of the Norwegian refueling ship Maud at the Haakonsvern Naval Base in the city of Bergen.

Over 1,000 Companies Have Curtailed Operations in Russia--But Some Remain

Reuters says [link:https://www.reuters.com/markets/europe/top-brands-pull-out-russia-their-goods-remain-easy-find-2023-02-22/|

MOSCOW, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Trucks carrying Coca Cola roll across the border into Russia, tourists return from abroad laden with Zara's latest designs, and local online marketplaces snap up IKEA's furniture stocks. Western brands may have left the country, but their goods haven't.
Despite European, North American and Japanese companies exiting Russia over its actions in Ukraine, the impact on Russian consumers is minimal, although delivery times can be longer and some goods more expensive.

So now Yale has done extensive research to find out who is still doing business with Russia.
The latest update done this month is pretty interesting.

Well I waited a week too long to plant my Sugar snap peas here in zone 8a

The weather has been so erratic here in Ft Worth!
3 solid days of around 19* (below freezing) and today it is at least 82*today. We have had wind gusts up to 50 miles an hr at least once a week this spring, too. We did have 2” of some much needed rain last week, so that’s something.

Went ahead and started what I can; it’s going to be another hot dry summer here. Not sure our Zone is still 8a anymore. More like 7b now.

Across the Pacific Northwest, firs are dying in record numbers as beetles, fire, and extreme heat

test the trees’ endurance.

Fir trees in the Pacific Northwest have died off in record numbers in 2022 after three years of severe drought and heat waves, according to U.S. Forest Service researchers.

In some parts of Oregon, more than half of the fir trees have died, clearly visible as the evergreen conifer turns brick red. These mortality events are not unheard of, but this is twice as bad as any that has been recorded since the agency started tracking forest health in 1947.
