PORTLAND, Oregon During the first presidential debate of 2020 on Tuesday night, there were multiple mentions of Portland, including the local law enforcement.
After debate moderator Chris Wallace asked the candidates about race issues in America, President Trump brought up the support of one specific official:
"I have Portland; the sheriff just came out today and said, 'I support President Trump.'"
There is no sheriff of Portland, but Multnomah County Sheriff Mike Reese tweeted that he does not and will never support President Trump.
Suddenly I can't see photos posted on DU
or Tweets that have been copied and posted, only the links. Is this everyones experience? Can the problem be fixed and, if so, how?
Portland Parks Bureau denies permit for Proud Boys to hold rally at Delta Park, citing coronavirus s
Source: The Oregonian
The city of Portland has denied a permit to the far-right group Proud Boys, which has been planning a rally on Saturday in North Portlands Delta Park, finding that the groups estimated crowd of 10,000 people exceeds public safety measures in light of the current coronavirus pandemic.
The right-wing group, which has gained national attention for its heated rhetoric and marches that often devolve into violence, originally planned to hold the rally in Terry Schrunk Plaza. The change in venue was made, the group said in a statement last week, in order to accommodate
a battalion of patriots who are ready to exercise their constitutionally protected right to assemble.
But the citys Park Bureau, in consultation with Mayor Ted Wheeler, found that the groups large crowd estimate ran counter to safeguards necessary to prevent the spread of COVID-19, according to city officials.
The city found the described event gathering would not comply with Oregon Health Authority guidelines about the number of people allowed in gatherings and cant be conducted with proper physical distancing, according to Commissioner Amanda Fritz, who oversees the Parks Bureau.

Moreover, the Democratic nominee for vice president, Sen. Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.), sits on the Judiciary Committee. Do Republicans really want to give the whip-smart, telegenic senator potentially hours of live TV coverage watch Democrats give her their time so she can rake the nominee over the coals during which she makes clear just how extreme Trumps nominee is? I am going to guess the answer is no.
Worth waiting to get past the paywall.

The Media Learned Nothing From 2016
The press hasnt broken its most destructive habits when it comes to covering Donald Trump.

Were seeing a huge error, and a potential tragedy, unfold in real time.
Thats a sentence that could apply to countless aspects of economic, medical, governmental, and environmental life at the moment. What I have in mind, though, is the almost unbelievable failure of much of the press to respond to the realities of the Trump age.
Many of our most influential editors and reporters are acting as if the rules that prevailed under previous American presidents are still in effect. But this president is different; the rules are different; and if it doesnt adapt, fast, the press will stand as yet another institution that failed in a moment of crucial pressure.
In some important ways, media outlets are repeating the mistake made by former Special Counsel Robert Mueller. In his book about the Mueller investigation, True Crimes and Misdemeanors (and in a New Yorker article), Jeffrey Toobin argues that Muellers tragic flaw was a kind of anachronistic idealismwhich had the same effect as naivete. Mueller knew the ethical standards he would maintain for himself and insist on from his team. He didnt understand that the people he was dealing with thought standards were for chumps. Mueller didnt imagine that a sitting attorney general would intentionally misrepresent his report, which is of course what Bill Barr did. Mueller wanted to avoid an unseemly showdown, or the appearance of a fishing expedition inquiry, that would come from seeking a grand-jury subpoena for Donald Trumps testimony, so he never spoke with Trump under oath, or at all. Trump, Barr, and their team viewed this decorousness as a sign of weakness, which they could exploit.

Something similar is going on now with many members of the press.
