Today's cute Google Doodle: First Day of Fall

The artwork used for the doodle – rocks surrounding a tree with falling leaves – mirrors the image used earlier this year during the Vernal Equinox. Instead of watching leaves fall – the rocks looked upon a tree as it bloomed.

Right now, a limited number of countries in the Southern Hemisphere – Australia, New Zealand, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Peru – will see the same Spring-themed doodle on their Google homepage today, marking the first day of Spring below the equator.

Google’s New Doodle Celebrates Yma Sumac, the ‘Peruvian Songbird’

Google marked what would have been the singer’s 94th birthday Tuesday with a new doodle in her honor.

Born Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chávarri del Castillo, Yma grew up in the mountains of Peru, where she would sing to her surroundings and pretend she was performing for an audience. She got her big break as a teenager when she was invited to sing on an Argentine radio station. Listeners were immediately floored by her incredible vocal range; she was known to hit at least five octaves.

Yma moved to the U.S. in 1946, where she was quickly signed by Capital Records. She reached the prime of her career in the 1950s, when she graced the stages of Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, London’s Royal Albert Hall and other elite venues.

I don't know how she does it.

We are the same age and I'm a wreck if I don't get my nap! I don't even know how she can go around in heels all day. God bless her!

I also blame the media.

They went for novelty instead of doing serious journalism. F* every one of them who did not take him seriously and expose his bigotry and corruption from the day he announced.

I was on the computer.

I was furloughed that year and was at home on the computer, with the TV on in the background. I didn't understand what was going on at first, but then no one did. I think Katie Couric was reporting.

Today's Google Doodle: The Paralympics begin in Rio.

Google is marking the start of the 2016 Paralympics today with an animated image on its homepage.

Hosted in Rio this year, Google says this is the first time the Paralympics has been held in a Latin American city. Among the 500 athletic events, canoeing and paratriathlon have been added to the games which will run through September 18.

The 2016 Paralympics Doodle leads to a search for “start of the 2016 paralympics,” and includes a selection of images to highlight different Paralympic competitions.

“What started as a small gathering of British WWII veterans in 1948 has bloomed into the world’s largest sporting event for athletes with physical disabilities, drawing 4,500 athletes from 176 countries worldwide,” reports the Google Doodle blog.

Colorado:

1913

Tent cities were formed with resources from the United Mine Workers union, which organized Colorado coal miners. The miners had yet to gain the eight-hour workday and benefit from the full enforcement of labor laws. Mary Harris 'Mother Jones' gave a speech, which led to the Fuel and Iron strike of 1913-1914

This is so cool! An artist's interactive map of women and the labor movement:

About the project:
Inspired by Hillary Clinton’s historic nomination for president, Mazza created a floor-to-ceiling knitted map showcasing the lineage of women’s labor and celebrating the generations of women who have fought for equality. The piece is crafted from needlework, a historically feminized form of industrial labor, and symbols from historic moments in the labor movement are stitched on each state.
