My sympathies to NC if that is where they are headed next.

We have had our share of nightmares in PA. There are no bounds to their greed. It seems crazy to dispose of the wastewater in that manner. It won't matter to them though. All you can do is organize, fight, and hope you can make it so uncomfortable for them that they will go somewhere else. Good luck to you all.

I ran for delegate to the DNC in 2004.

I have been politically active since I was in junior high. I actually worked for a neighbor who was running for mayor of our city. I organized a group of classmates to hand out campaign literature in the park.

I worked my butt off for Mondale in 1984. Since then I have attended rallies, worked for candidates, etc. Most recently was for a slate of school board candidates two years ago.

I love election day! it's better than a holiday for me! When I retire I would like to work at the polls.

This is a great question.

I am a non-practicing Christian. I vote for the democrats because in my mind at least, they represent the poor and the working class. I know this is not always true, but they hold the best hope compared to the other party.

I believe in helping others, equality and fairness. I loathe everything the republicans stand for.

Revisiting the Bangladesh garment factory tragedy....

I found this on HuffPo.... It is about retailers with shameful records of doing business with countries that use sweatshop labor and other safety violations. The article mentions that almost all retailers are "guilty" of this practice, however.

You might be surprised at some of the retailers pictured in the slide show. Link:

Not enough, IMO.

I try to keep up with the news etc. as much as anyone. I never hear or see anything about how Obamacare affects the general population. For example, in the latest press conference, the president said that ACA has been "85%" implemented and the only thing left is the exchanges.... and that if the states won't fund them, the federal government will.

This was news to me, as I'm sure it was to many others. There should have been PSAs at every step of implementation. If there were, I guess most people missed them.

Another thing that has me baffled... I am hearing that doctors are cutting seniors on Medicare from their patient loads. I also know of a person who is having trouble finding a primary dr. because they are not accepting new Medicare patients. Has anyone else experienced this.... and does it have anything to do with ACA?

Thanks for any replies.

Only if we are requiring knowing phone numbers in order to pass!

I was using that as an example of the huge gap between reality and expectations. Early reading does start at home and in that sense is a parental responsibility. So is seeing that kids do their homework and study for tests. By fifth grade, it's kind of late to start! Better late than never, though.

As to retaining kids.... that is a complex problem. How many times should we retain them before we have 15-year-olds in elementary school? IMO, it's appropriate to keep a kindergarten or first grader another year, but the older ones should be promoted with remediation. I really think that requiring students to pass these unrealistic high-stakes exams will result in more drop-outs. Of course, that can be used to punish the schools too!

Could the Marcellus boom be going bust in PA? We can start to hope!

Market for Western Pennsylvania’s Marcellus shale land changing

By Timothy Puko
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Published: Saturday, May 4, 2013, 12:01 a.m.

There was a time not too long ago when oil and gas companies would gobble up whatever land they could buy in the Marcellus shale.

Those times are long gone.

EQT Corp. is buying nearly 100,000 acres of land in the region, it announced Friday — and it doesn't plan to bother with even half of it.

The Downtown-based gas producer is paying Chesapeake Energy Corp. $113 million in the deal, more than half of it for gas rights on about 99,000 acres of Marcellus and Utica shale land. But only 25,000 acres of Marcellus acreage in Washington, Greene, and Allegheny counties really matter, company officials said. They don't have any plans for the rest, because the leases are about to expire.

From femmocrat: I hope this is a good sign that the land grab is over and they are starting to pull out of western PA?? The end of the article also mentions some scaling back in eastern PA.

The mentioned landfill is a couple of miles from my house.

It's actually a lagoon, not like a solid waste landfill. The truck with the radioactive waste was sent back to the drill site, but I don't know what happened to it after that.

Local people used to be organized to fight and protest this site, but I guess everyone has given up (or died or moved away). It's back a rural road.... I have only been back there once a long time ago and you really couldn't see much from the road. With Corbett offering the drillers unrestricted access to rape and pillage our state, I guess there isn't much hope for closing it down.

I think it is because everyone can relate.

At some point everyone had a "bad' teacher..... the one who gave them a C, told them their art work was lousy or that they couldn't carry a tune. I'm not denying that there are people who are teachers who should not be. There are some pedophiles and perverts like in any other profession and they need to be run out of town on a rail. There are teachers who are inept or burned out and should probably find another career (if they could find one). The profession does not want these people in the classroom either.

But so many people have an inflated opinion of their own (or their children's) talents and brilliance and can't bear that there were actually other students who were "better" than they were or that their teachers failed to recognize their "special-ness".

(Veteran teacher speaking from decades of experience.)
