Corbett slashes (his own) Ready to Succeed grants program.

Budget wrangling cuts $20M from Pennsylvania scholarship program touted by Corbett

Gov. Tom Corbett announced his Ready to Succeed scholarship program with a bang last winter, pitching a proposal to set aside $25 million for grants for college students with family incomes up to $110,000 a year.

Corbett, who has come under fire for reducing subsidies to public universities, framed the proposal as an effort to help minimize debt for students who don't qualify for need-based aid but have completed at least one year of school with a 3.25 GPA. He vowed he wouldn't sign a budget without the program described as relief for hard-pressed, middle-income families.

After months of contentious budget negotiations, the program was quietly pared to $5 million.

National Dog Day should be a major holiday!

The National Dog Day Foundation supports all breeds and varieties of dogs and discourages purchasing from unethical backyard breeders and puppy mills; instead, support reputable breeders or adopt from rescue homes.

He should have resigned.

I don't know if it would have made a difference to the neo-cons who were rabid for war, but he might have maintained a little integrity and the respect of the country.

Even I didn't believe his "testimony" at the UN and I was just a nobody from nowhere without any inside information. It was all a charade.

I am appalled that they replaced Bogut and Cardille with those offensive wing nuts.

We love Jack Bogut and Chilly Billy in Pittsburgh. They are both Pittsburgh institutions. What a sad day in the 'Burgh.

I don't know if it's worse. I think some of it has to do with location.

I have found "country" people to be fairly nice. I am more aware of rude people in the city. Actually, the biggest a-holes I ever encountered lived in an upscale suburb.

And not not start a generational dispute, but I think younger people are more self-centered and less aware of being considerate to others.

Our power goes out for no apparent reason.

Beautiful sunny day, not a cloud in the sky and the power will sputter. I read or heard somewhere (?) that the power companies no longer trim the trees, and that is a big part of the problem. They haven't cut back our trees along the road in years.

Longest it was ever out was 3 days during a blizzard a few years ago. We lived huddled around the fireplace. We fared better than many people whose power was out for a week! After that storm, we bought a generator. Fortunately we haven't used it yet! I think of it as an "insurance policy"!
