I used to get all fired up about issues....

Not so much anymore. Part of it is not giving a crap, part of it is probably a defense mechanism.

I still try to keep informed on important news, but it does take a toll. I realized long ago that maybe one person can make a difference, but I am not that person anymore. Let others take up the banners and fight the good fight. I don't have it in me anymore.

Hmmm.... Guess you are right....

But if corporations are people, are people corporations?

I just want to stop paying for wars.

I don't know if the Bible covers that, but "Thou shalt not kill" is my deeply and sincerely held religious belief.

Question on DU features:

Is it possible to block an entire forum or group?

I figured out how to auto-trash certain keywords, but so far not an entire forum.

Thank you in advance.

Corbett "considering" tax on frackers to help balance the budget. Yeah, sure.

HARRISBURG — After years of opposition, the Corbett administration said for the first time on Tuesday that the governor will not preclude a Marcellus shale tax as part of a budget solution to close a $1.4 billion deficit.
Republican Gov. Tom Corbett stressed during a news conference that he would consider new revenue only once the Legislature sends him legislation to curb spiraling pension costs from a $50 billion unfunded liability.
“I'm not ruling out a severance tax. You didn't hear me rule out a severance tax,” state Budget Secretary Charles Zogby told reporters after the news conference.

I guess I'm kind of in the middle! I believe I am a product of my own and my parents' hard work and some lucky breaks along the way.

K & R

The points about professional growth are spot on. Professional "development" days (aka "inservice" days) which are planned by the administration are a pretty much a joke and a waste of time. I taught a course that was not affected by standardized testing, so I often found myself in unstructured "departmental meetings" (i.e., gripe sessions and dumping grounds) while the real teachers were receiving training in their subject area.

Sometimes, when the schedules for inservice days would come out, the off-core subject teachers were not even listed and we would wander around looking for a place to fit in. Ridiculous waste of time.
