Daily Beast: Holy crap, Tim Kaine killed it in first rally with Clinton

by Michael Tomasky

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/07/23/tim-kaine-just-killed-it-in-his-first-speech-with-clinton.html

Holy crap. He killed it.

I’m not trying to spin you. I’m sitting here in shock. Shock. Tim Kaine was unbelievable.

He was natural. He was smart. He was relaxed and funny, and he was serious. He was proud of himself and his wife and family but never arrogant. He was humble without ever being cloying in that way the politically humble can often be. He was genuine. He was unbelievable.

SNIP

I know the political science says vice presidents don’t matter. But politics is as much art as science. We just met an artist today

And here's Gail Collins on Pence:

But about Mike Pence. His speech is destined to be totally forgotten in the Cruzmania. But he did a grand job of returning the auditorium to the early-evening theme of sleepiness. Every single one of the Trump children turns out to be a more exciting speaker than the prospective vice-president. Tiffany’s story about how Donald wrote notes on her report cards suddenly took on new and compelling dimensions.

Traumatized, mentally ill rape survivor jailed for month to ensure her testimony

During the rape trial, she had to be admitted to a hospital for mental health treatment. When the judge ordered the trial in recess, he ordered that she spend the recess in jail. Someone made a mistake entering the order, and she was identified in the papers as a rapist, rather than as a rape victim -- which led to beatings and other mistreatment in the jail.

The jail also failed to give the woman her prescribed medications.

She's suing now. And why am I not surprised this was in Texas?

She has bipolar disorder and was admitted to a local hospital for mental health treatment when the judge ordered a recess for the holiday break until January 2016.

According to the documents, authorities were scheduled to be on vacation and "did not want the responsibility of having to monitor Jane Doe's well being or provide victim services to her during the holiday recess."

The complaint alleges that the district attorney's office obtained an order from the Harris County sheriff to take the woman into custody so she would not flee before completing her testimony.

The employee booking her into Harris County Jail identified her as a "defendant in a sexual assault case, rather than the victim." That impacted her treatment from jail staff, as the complaint reads:

The complaint notes that her "rapist was also an inmate in the same facility" and treated more humanely. "Her rapist was not denied medical care, psychologically tortured, brutalized by other inmates, or beaten by jail guards," it reads.

Kasich delegate: I opposed Trump at the RNC convention. It was scary.

http://www.vox.com/2016/7/23/12258018/republican-convention-delegate-nevertrump

Once it became very clear that Cruz wasn’t going to endorse Trump, the hall exploded. They tried to shout him down to "Trump! Trump! Trump!" "Honor your pledge!!!"

It was, to my ear, the loudest the hall got during the entire event — even louder than the welcome Trump would get the next night when he walked on stage to formally accept the nomination. It was a white hot, visceral anger. And the hall was soaked in it.

I never thought I could love Ted Cruz. But in that moment, I did.

How I became @UnknownDelegate

Let me start at the beginning. Several months ago, I ran for and was elected as a Kasich delegate from my state. . . .

Dangerous heat expected in Philadelphia during convention -- and possibly

some thundershowers.

Everybody there should make sure to drink plenty of water -- and stay out of the sun -- and go inside during thundershowers.

http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/weather/stories/DNC-Weather-Forecast-Philadelphia-Heat-NBC10-First-Alert-387677231.html

Sunday will have the same outdoor air temperature but the humidity will already start to creep up a bit. That same 97 will feel like 101 or 102. Things get even worse on Monday, when the dew points move firmly into the oppressive category. The heat index will range between 105 and 110 degrees. This is very dangerous heat. Because of the moisture in the atmosphere, your sweat won’t actually cool you down all that much and it is very easy to get dehydrated. If you’re out protesting, the pavement will absorb the heat and hold on to it long after the sun goes down, in something called the “urban heat island effect.”

We will hit the 90s before noon and stay there through 7 PM. Even the night won’t provide much relief, as we’re forecasting a low in the upper 70s. It’s also important to note that Monday has the best chance of thunderstorms. You’ll want to keep an eye to the sky and make sure you have some place to go through if one of them rolls through. Our NBC10 app will send a push alert when storms are 30 minutes away, which will give you ample time to get indoors somewhere. Lightning and damaging wind is possible, so it’s not a good idea to wait these out outdoors.

The weather story is a bit of a broken record. This same pattern continues for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The temperatures decrease very gradually and the humidity comes down a bit as well, but we keep the storm threat in there for every day that week. They’ll be much more isolated but it will still be important to be weather aware. The heat index for the rest of the week will be around 100, as well.

I don't understand why the million or so protestors the leaders expect in Philly

weren't out there protesting the evil going on in Cleveland.

They weren't. The demonstrations were very small and contained in Cleveland. So why do progressives protest other progressives more than the party at the other extreme?

Why do they think it will help their cause to appear so divided? To send the message that everyone on the right and many people on the left hate Hillary?

Why weren't these people out there protesting the monster in Cleveland?

Munich shooter: no terrorist ties, say authorities. Obsessed with mass shootings.

http://www.dallasnews.com/news/local-news/20160723-munich-gunman-had-no-known-terrorist-ties-authorities-say.ece

MUNICH -- The 18-year-old gunman who opened fire at a crowded Munich shopping mall, killing nine people and wounding more than two dozen before killing himself, had no known ties to any terrorist group, German authorities said Saturday.

A search of the German-Iranian shooter's home turned up evidence of an obsession with mass shootings, the authorities said. He is believed to have acted alone.

Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said the gunman apparently had researched other mass-killings in Europe, including a 2009 school shooting in Winnenden in southwestern Germany, and bomb-and-gun attacks in Norway that killed 77. Friday was the five-year anniversary of the Norway attacks.

"There was material found in the apartment of the suspect that showed a particular interest in shooting sprees [but] there is so far no indication of any connection to international terrorism," de Maiziere said Saturday.

Hats off to Joe the Revelator, Bernie supporter, who's been trying to tell us

about Tim Kaine -- and how he's a great guy and NOT BORING.

Joe, you are right. Tim's a wonderful addition to the ticket. He and Hillary will make a great team.

My favorite line from Hillary's speech introducing Tim Kaine?

When, right at the beginning, she chastised the Don for saying, "I ALONE . . . "

My favorite line from Tim's speech?

The three questions at the end, starting with "You're fired" -- to Donald Trump.

What were your favorite parts? If you haven't seen it, you can watch the whole thing online at c-span.org
