At the end of his “New Rules” segment Friday evening, Bill Maher was desperate to find out who exactly was the “radical activist” Republicans love to compare to President Barack Obama.
The Real Time host requested that Republicans answer two questions when lumping civil rights advocate Saul Alinsky to the current executive chief.
“Why would you invite my outrage by suggesting such a specious link between our president and Saul Alinsky?” he asked. “And two, who the fuck is Saul Alinsky?”
Eager to find out truly who Alinsky was, Maher summed up why the likes of Newt Gingrich loved to make the comparison.
“I wikipedia’ed the guy,” he said. “Instantly, I discovered the problem: he liked black people. Way back in the 30s, he started organizing the civil rights movement. And as a historian like Newt Gingrich would tell you, the civil rights movement turned out to be a huge burden on white people...”

Newt Gingrich's flailing campaign in Florida, being seriously outspent by the RomneyBot, has struck back with almost lethal savagery. I'm sure someone during the day took note of this, but I thought I'd post it for the night owls. Gingrich's campaign has put out a short film accusing Romney of Medicare fraud. The film, called "Blood Money" is here:

This film is BRUTAL in its accusations, as you have seen if you've just watched it. It was on Andrew Sullivan's site, and it will be airing in Florida during this weekend. My God, this is a sharpened ax thrown right at the Romney campaign. Accusing someone of Medicare fraud, in Florida, is the hardest of hardball politics. I don't know if this will be a game changer--Romney is dominating the aiwaves--but I have a feeling that this is going to dog Willard farther down the line.
At least, I hope it does. And if we play our cards right, it will.

...First, he's saying that he gives 40 percent of his income "to the community" in the form of taxes and charitable deductions. (I'm not sure how he gets to 40 percent, given that he says he's adding 15 percent and 15 percent, however. And given that two-thirds of his charitable donations go to the Mormon Church that bankrolled Proposition 8, you can question how much the community benefited, but I digress.)
Second, he's saying that thanks to the nominal corporate tax rate of 35 percent, he's actually paying 50 percent in taxes when you add in his 15 percent. Now, if he really believed that he was paying 50 percent in taxes, he wouldn't have said he gives back 40 percent to the community—he'd have said he gives back 75 percent. But he doesn't really believe what he's saying ... because it is patently absurd.
Paul Krugman has an excellent dismantling of the case Romney is trying to make regarding corporate taxes. First, because most of Romney's capital gains income comes by way of carried interest, it was never previously taxed at 35 percent. Second, almost no companies actually pay the nominal corporate tax rate. Third, even if it were fair to say that the income had previously been taxed at 35 percent rate, conservatives have long argued that corporate taxes come at the expense of worker's wages. Now, suddenly, they are saying it comes at the expensive of investors? Talk about double-counting!
The bottom-line: No matter how you slice it, Mitt Romney is full of baloney on this.

"Particularly Dangerous" Tornado Outbreak Underway -- Liveblog Updated 13x

The SPC has issued a "Particularly Dangerous Situation" Tornado Watch for parts of Mississippi, Arkansas, and Tennessee until midnight CST as a line of storms continues to build up and move east across Arkansas. "Particularly Dangerous Situation" is enhanced wording added to a tornado watch to indicate the higher-than-normal potential for large, destructive, long-track tornadoes in any of the stronger storms tonight.
This is an extremely dangerous situation not only because of the intensity of the tornadoes, but because this is happening overnight. 2.5x more people die in nighttime tornado outbreaks than they would if the storms were to occur during the day, because 1) most people don't get warnings if they're asleep, and 2) it's a sad fact that people try to look for tornadoes to see it for themselves before they take cover, and you can't see a tornado at night. They don't come with built-in nightlights. Keep a very close eye on the weather tonight if you live in Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi or Alabama, as these storms are forecast to grow more violent as the hours pass.
Here's a quick look at the area most at risk for these particularly dangerous tornadoes, which is shaded in red. The yellow area (slight risk for severe t'storms) is also at risk (albeit not as high of a risk) for storms tonight into tomorrow morning.

This is a dangerous situation. It's moving at 55 MPH, so you don't have much time to hesitate if you're in the warned area...

Joe Paterno Dead: Ex-Penn State Football Coach Dies From Lung Cancer
Former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno has died. The college-football legend was 85 years old when he succumbed in his battle with lung cancer.
Paterno's diagnosis was revealedr in mid November, shortly after he was dismissed from his duties as coach of the Nittany Lions. Paterno's ouster came in the aftermath of the arrest of Jerry Sandusky, a longtime Paterno lieutenant facing more than 50 counts of sexual abuse against children. Amid evidence that Paterno had been notified of the abuse but had done little beyond his legal obligation to prevent it, the Penn State board of trustees voted to dismiss the longtime coach in November. The scandal reverberated beyond college football, and sullied a reputation that had once seemed unimpeachable — particularly in central Pennsylvania, where Paterno, or "JoePa," was revered.
During his 46 seasons coaching Penn State, Paterno racked up 409 wins -- the the record for a Division I football coach. He guided his teams to national championships in 1982 and 1986.
The Brooklyn native is survived by his wife, Sue, and their five children.

I’ve always advocated for critical consumption, and what could be more important than an awareness of the sources of our families’ daily info and entertainment diets? My parents sent me to Catholic grade school, catechism and the whole nine yards. My mother was Catholic but she was also a Democrat, pro women's rights. She dragged us to church but she was not on board with a lot of the Church's ways. My dad was Presbyterian and never went to church. He didn't buy into much of the rah rah business. But, Catholic school was where we went.
By the time I was 10, it felt like I had every sacrament except marriage & last rites. I had one clip-on necktie and a drawer full of white shirts & black pants. My instructors were nuns or priests. I still have scars on my knuckles from steel tip rulers being applied in response to some hijinx or another.
Until about the age of 10 or 11, us kids were kind of like a room full of puppies. Adults, nuns and priests mostly talked at us making announcements, scolding and instructions of some sort. Nobody asked us what we thought. We talked to each other in the schoolyard or on the weekend as we ran around on our own. We never asked the nuns or priests that much either. Nobody wanted to get pulled into some lecture about Jesus or some obscure holiday / saint / rite that we would then be responsible for remembering later.
That all changed around the time I was 12 or 13...
