A few words about democratic socialism from some democratic socialists

A few words about democratic socialism from some democratic socialists
by Meteor Blades

The Democratic Socialists of America is the largest such group in the United States (formed in 1982 by a merger of the New American Movement—a group I was in—and the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee, a remnant of the old Socialist Party of America. Today the stated view of DSA (which has formally endorsed Sanders) is this:

Democratic socialists do not want to create an all-powerful government bureaucracy. But we do not want big corporate bureaucracies to control our society either. Rather, we believe that social and economic decisions should be made by those whom they most affect.

Today, corporate executives who answer only to themselves and a few wealthy stockholders make basic economic decisions affecting millions of people. Resources are used to make money for capitalists rather than to meet human needs. We believe that the workers and consumers who are affected by economic institutions should own and control them.

Social ownership could take many forms, such as worker-owned cooperatives or publicly owned enterprises managed by workers and consumer representatives. Democratic socialists favor as much decentralization as possible. While the large concentrations of capital in industries such as energy and steel may necessitate some form of state ownership, many consumer-goods industries might be best run as cooperatives.

Democratic socialists have long rejected the belief that the whole economy should be centrally planned. While we believe that democratic planning can shape major social investments like mass transit, housing, and energy, market mechanisms are needed to determine the demand for many consumer goods.

Obviously, not every democratic socialist is a member of DSA, including Sanders himself. And other democratic socialists take a different view on some matters. But the approach laid out above is clearly not the authoritarian socialism that some would like to make of it...

HA! HA! HA! CNN ignores their own poll numbers and calls Clinton the winner!

CNN's current headline says:
CLINTON'S CONFIDENT SWEEP
http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/13/politics/democratic-debate-updates/index.html

Even though their own online poll (changing by the split second) basically says this:

Clinton 11%
Sanders 82%
O'Malley 4%
Webb 2%
Chaffee 1%

wow.

(The poll links to their facebook page where anyone can vote, whether you have a facebook account or not.)

BERNIE SANDERS HAS PROVIDED STATE BY STATE VOTER REGISTRATION INFO!!! deadlines, closed or open, etc

Bernie has it all listed for us: http://voteforbernie.org/

Bernie supporters are particularly excited about how his message is resonating with young people, but also some republicans. As exciting as this information is, it means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING if we don't get them registered properly for the primary election and SOON!!!

In New York state, for example, there are ONLY 3 DAYS LEFT TO CHANGE YOUR REGISTRATION!! New York has CLOSED PRIMARIES which means that each registered voter must claim party affiliation and cannot vote for a candidate in a different party unless they change their affiliation.

Also, teenagers who are 17, but will be 18 at the time of the primary, can still register to vote. They must provide photo ID which proves they will be 18 on April 19, 2016, usually a driver's license. Registration can be done at any DMV. Other locations may be also be available in your state - call your local DMV for further info.

Bernie has a list of all the states with their registration deadlines and whether or not they vote by caucus, open primary or closed primary. Only open primary states can cross party lines when they vote. Again, the list can be seen here: http://voteforbernie.org/

Please help spread the word on this. And please kick and recommend this post for wider visibility.

Time to GET OUT THE VOTE!!!!!!

IMPORTANT UPDATE: The October 9th deadline is only to change party affiliation. Registration ends 25 days before the election. h/t to mak3cats for the correction.

ACTION: Congress killing Net neutrality by budget-rider; Stop them NOW
by Brown Thrasher

I just now found out about this, so this will be short but enraging.

Big Telecom's friends in Congress have sneaked a rider into the budget bill that kills the FCC's new net-neutrality protections that we fought so hard to gain throughout 2014.

We now have hours to stop this. Public Citizen has revived its Stop The Slowdown petition, but most importantly you should call your Senators & Representatives immediately & tell them to vote down this piece of slime.

Ahmed Mohamed made a clock, brought it to school, and every adult there went out of their Islamophobic minds. Ahmed became an overnight celebrity and received lots of accolades and cool swag. Then the Ahmed-truthers came out and ruined that feel-good ending because people are terrible.
