Daily Holidays October 23

National Boston Cream Pie Day The Pie that is actually a cake was made in the Parker House Hotel in Boston by Chef M. Sanzian way back in 1856. Originally this American-French Chef called the cake the “Parker House Chocolate Cream Pie” and had taken the French Butter sponge cake and filled it with a delightful Crème pâtissière, an egg-thickened custard with a history going back at least as far as Ancient Rome, brushed it with rum syrup and topped with a chocolate fondant. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/boston-cream-pie-day/

iPod Day The year is 2001, the portable electronics industry is booming, and the CD player is the hottest personal musical device around. Little did they know that the music world was about to be rocked to its core by a quiet computer company that’s set on changing everything. Enter the iPod, a compact and durable device capable of holding the entire contents of most peoples CD collections. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/ipod-day/

National Mole Day is celebrated annually on October 23 from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m. It celebrates Avogadro’s Number (6.02 x 1023), which is a basic measuring unit in chemistry. Mole Day was created as a way to foster interest in chemistry, and schools throughout the United States and around the world celebrate with various activities related to chemistry and/or moles. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/mole-day/

Mother in Law Day How to celebrate Mother-In-Law Day. Start simple, give your mother-in-law a call and sincerely ask how she’s doing. Mother-In-Law Day is about diving into the lions mouth and acknowledging that they aren’t all bad. Or, if they are, letting them know exactly how bad they really are. Never underestimate the value of a good roasting when you have someone like a mother-in-law who either doesn’t like you, or doesn’t know that sometimes you have to let folks work things out for themselves. On the other hand, if you have a wonderful mother-in-law be sure to spend some time telling her how much you appreciate her, which is good advice even if you don’t like her and think she’s more than a little annoying. Mother-In-Law Day is sometimes about making your partners life a little easier by appeasing the great villain. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/mother-in-law-day/

Daily Holidays October 22

National Nut Day Walnut, Hazelnut, Chestnut, Kola Nuts, Pine Nuts, Cashews, and more. There are more types of nuts in the world than most people realize, and many more of these are used for food than people suspect. Most people have a favorite kind of nut, most commonly involved in a favored kind of treat, but there are varieties and uses for nuts that are not commonly known. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/nut-day/

Caps Locks Day Caps Lock Day first came to pass in the year 2000, when Derek Arnold of Iowa decided that he, like so many other internet users, had simply had enough of people using all caps to emphasize themselves on the web. So he created Caps Lock Day in the interest of poking fun at people who use this abomination of a typing style, and to finally bring some sanity to the net. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/caps-lock-day/

International Stuttering Awareness Day People make jokes about everything—about blondes, about citizens of every country in the world, about men, women and children and teenagers, about cultures, history and religion, about various human conditions or mindsets…some of them are genuinely funny, and some of them are downright cruel and offensive. In particular, jokes about disabilities can be very mean-spirited and hurtful towards those who have those disabilities as well as their friends and families. And that’s why so many different disability awareness days exist, to help us understand how much harder the lives of the disabled are, even when their disabilities seem relatively minor. Stuttering can pose real problems in both the personal and professional lives of those suffering from it and take years to get under control, not to mention the amount of embarrassment and frustration it can cause in the meantime. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-stuttering-awareness-day/

Smart is Cool Day If there’s ever a time to show off your IQ test results, Smart is Cool Day is probably it. Though it’s not clear where the tradition started, the eggheaded individual’s idea was absolutely brilliant. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/smart-is-cool-day/

Daily Holidays October 20

National Brandied Fruit Day Brandied Fruit has been a favorite treat for those who enjoy the delicious bite of fruit with the full-bodied flavor of Brandy. Brandy is perhaps the ultimate distillation of fruit, as it starts its life as a bountiful wine with a delightful bouquet, which is then distilled down into the spirit that is Brandy. From there, the addition of sugar, heat, and a select number of herbs, spices, and occasionally additional fruit is added to create this wonderful treat with the rich bite. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/brandied-fruit-day/

Waiter's Day Anybody who’s worked as a waiter for even a couple of days knows just how tough it can be. Basically, your job is never, ever done. Have you brought that family their food? Great, now you can bring that booth full of noisy jocks their bill. Done that? Looks like that elderly couple would like a coffee refill, so don’t keep them waiting. Done that? Good, because that lady over there that ordered a salad with the dressing separately got her salad doused in dressing and is demanding another one. And while you’re in the kitchen, why don’t you bring the aforementioned family their desserts, because their children are crying that they want ice cream, not a roast beef? Waiters Day is a long-overdue day during which we should all take a moment to show our appreciation for those who work long hours on their feet, often for minimum wage. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/waiters-day/

Suspenders Day What do you wear when your pants are too high to support the use of a belt? When you have fantastically, almost comically huge pants like a clown, no mere strap of leather wrapped about your waist is going to do the job. Time for a formal party? Nothing says formal like a strapping pair of suspenders slung over your shoulder. Suspender’s day is the day to make sure the world remembers the fashion and handsomeness of the much maligned suspender. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/suspenders-day/

Information Overload Day The world buzzes around us full of noise, from the ding of our phones announcing a new text-message to the “You’ve got mail” announcement letting us know we’ve got yet another piece of doubtless important information. The phone rings, the TV chirps out commercials and admonishments, and the radio drones on endlessly about upcoming elections and what’s going on in the world of Hollywood. Information Overload Day reminds us that there’s such a thing as too much information, and sometimes this constant inundation can leave actually have a negative impact on our happiness and productivity. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/information-overload-day/

Daily Holidays October 19

Hag Fish Day reminds us that the ecology requires all sorts to keep our world healthy and in motion, so here’s to the unloved critters of the deep! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/hagfish-day/

Evaluate Your Life Day https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/evaluate-your-life-day/ The time comes in every life where we have to take an accounting, a reckoning of the things we’ve done, the progress we’ve made, and the path we’re on. During that evaluation we may find that we don’t like where we are, and want to make changes to move forward with our goals. Maybe you’ll find that you’re making the progress you wanted to, and everything is moving along smoothly, most likely it’ll wind up somewhere in between. Whatever the case, Evaluate your Life day is a great opportunity to figure out where you are on your path. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/evaluate-your-life-day/

Global Dignity Day is an initiative to educate and inspire young people and help them to understand their self-worth and goals. It was established in 2008 and continues to grow in popularity. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/global-dignity-day/

Daily Holidays October 18

National Chocolate Cupcake Day You know what’s better than a cake? Chocolate cake. You know what’s better than chocolate cake? A chocolate cupcake. That’s right, while we absolutely adore our cake, there’s a certain tug of delightful selfishness in a cake you can consume all to yourself, letting you revel in a little piece of gluttony. Chocolate Cupcake Day reminds us that sometimes it is more than acceptable to have a piece of confectionary delight that we simply don’t share with another, so find yourself a cupcake and make it disappear, just be sure it’s chocolate! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/chocolate-cupcake-day/

No Beard Day There’s been a strong movement lately to return to the days when beards were seen as a strong statement of masculinity. In a bold countermovement, No Beard Day comes along to convince men to take a razor to that magnificently furry face and return to a baby smooth complexion. While some of us feel this is nothing worse than purest heresy (unless we can convince those hipsters to shave), No Beard Day adherents feel a clean face is a lovely face. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/no-beard-day/

Daily Holidays October 17

Mulligan Day Commonly used in games such as golf, the term ‘mulligan’ derives from the 1920s when Canadian golfer David Mulligan made a mistake during a game and retook his shot. Since then, to ‘call a mulligan’ means the chance to try again. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/mulligan-day/

Spreadsheet Day A holiday sure to appeal to some people more than others, Spreadsheet Day commemorates the date that VisiCalc, the first spreadsheet program for personal computers, was released – October 17th, 1979. Since its beginnings, Spreadsheet Day has grown to become a day for celebrating both the advantages and the aggravations of working with spreadsheet software. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/spreadsheet-day/

Wear Something Gaudy Day In the 1970’s the hit TV Comedy “Three’s Company” we were introduced to a character by the name of Larry Dallas. It was from this character that we first were told that Wear Something Gaudy Day was something to be celebrated, and were given a fantastic example of how. Ever since then, people have been celebrating Wear Something Gaudy day with a complete lack of style and fashion! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/wear-something-gaudy-day/

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty Poverty has many faces, whether it be starving children in Africa or India or whether it be a struggling single Mother crying in the supermarket as her children look on confused. The examples of poverty range from extreme to almost imperceptible and the UN has declared Fighting Poverty to be one of the cores of their Millennium Development Goals. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-day-for-the-eradication-of-poverty/

Daily Holidays October 16

World Food Day The main principle which World Food Day celebrates is the furtherance of food security all over the world, especially in times of crisis. The launch of the Food and Agriculture Organisation by the UN has played a huge role in taking this worthy goal forward. Its annual celebration serves as a marker of the importance of this organisation and helps to raise awareness of the crucial need for successful agriculture policies to be implemented by governments across the world to ensure there is ample food available for everyone. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-food-day/

Department Store Day was established to occur on the 16th of October every year, established to recognize the great benefits they have brought to our lives. Some of the most memorable features of Department Stores were their use as a social location. There was a tradition of having a large clock on the front of the stores, often in an elaborate mounting. Here was a common place for people to meet and share the news of the day and catch up on the happenings within their increasingly busy days. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/department-store-day/

Dictionary Day is held in honor of Noah Webster, the man who is considered to have fathered the American Dictionary. 1758 was an auspicious year for the English language, and the first English Lexicographer, or one whose craft is writing, editing, and compiling English Dictionaries. The good man was born in Hartford Connecticut to a family of some means, and his parents had the distinction of being both priest, farmer, Captain of the local militia, and the one who founded the local book society, something like a local library. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/dictionary-day/

World Toy Camera Day World Toy Camera Day is the yearly event that honours the ridiculous photo taking capacity of outdated toy cameras. This festive occasion is celebrated on the third Saturday of October, with minor exceptions, mainly because the inventor at WTCD.org feels like it. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-toy-camera-day/

Former Schnucks president sues chain and CEO

Schnucks, one of the biggest grocery chains in St. Louis, is the target of a boycott, faces a potential strike and has, in recent weeks, managed to anger some local nonprofit groups. Now the company is embroiled in a fight with one of its former top executives.

Former Schnuck Markets president Anthony Hucker has filed suit against the chain and CEO Todd Schnuck for breach of contract, alleging he was terminated without cause after he was offered the CEO job at Save-A-Lot a year ago.

In the lawsuit pending in St. Louis County Circuit Court, Hucker accuses the Maryland Heights-based company and Todd Schnuck of intentionally interfering with his employment prospects after Schnuck refused to waive a non-compete agreement Hucker signed when he was hired.

After he was offered the CEO position at Earth City-based Save-A-Lot in October 2015, Hucker alleges that he approached Todd Schnuck, asking him to waive his non-compete agreement. Save-A-Lot, which is owned by Eden Prairie, Minn.-based SuperValu, has more than 1,300 stores in multiple states.

Daily Holidays October 15

Students’ Day World Students’ Day is a celebration of multiculturalism, diversity and cooperation among students across the globe. Though originally a day of commemoration of the more than 1,200 students from the University of Prague whose lives were taken in WWII, World Students’ Day has become an occasion for universities the world over to boast their masses of international students, and the good they do for the local community. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-students-day/

Sweetest Day Sometimes you just need a sweet, and Valentine ’s Day only comes once a year. What’s a body to do? Well, you celebrate the Sweetest Day of course! Like Valentine’s day this day is known for its distribution of sweets in heart shaped boxes, and a recognition of the love of candy. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/sweetest-day/

White Cane Safety Day Not every special day of the year has presidential approval but one that does is White Cane Safety Day, which was first proclaimed in 1964 by President Lyndon B Johnson. The white cane is a mobility tool that gives independence by making it possible for blind and visually impaired people to safely move around on their own. The National Federation of the Blind supplies a long white cane free of charge to everyone in the USA with low vision or blindness. White Cane Safety Day is intended to make everyone aware of the significance of a white cane and to encourage people, especially motorists, to take extra care when they see someone with a white cane. It has also become a day on which the achievements of the blind and visually impaired are celebrated and offers the chance to educate and raise awareness of the blind and visually impaired. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/white-cane-safety-day/

Chicken Cacciatori Day It’s probably best to start off by saying what cacciatore actually means, which will help shed some light on the dish’s origins. Cacciatore means “hunter” in Italian, and it is hunters who first ate this dish. In fact, it is thought that the first Chicken Caccaiatore was not made with chicken at all, but with rabbit or other wild game sometime during the Renaissance period, so between the 14th and 16th centuries. Chicken Cacciatore’s simple but delicious recipe was likely developed to satisfy the appetites of hunters who may have been on the track of a larger animal or herd of animals for several days, and who needed a tasty, filling stew that could easily be cooked outdoors to keep them going. The spices used, such as parsley and oregano, would have also been readily available to humble hunters. An interesting fact is that contrary to popular belief, Chicken Cacciatore did not originally contain tomatoes or tomato sauce, as tomatoes were brought to Italy from the New World later than it would have been made for the first time. When making this dish with chicken, it is more traditional to use the dark meat, not the white meat, as it contains more fat and therefore helps make a thicker, tastier sauce when cooked than lean chicken breast would. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/chicken-cacciatore-day/

Daily Holidays October 14

Be Bald and Be Free Day is a celebration of the bald pate and the strength of the men and women who have dared to bare it all. Don’t think that being bald has always been a sign of weakness, after all when was the last time you thought of Bruce Willis or Sean Connery as ‘weak’. Instead these men are bald and yet symbols of virility. They’re part of a grand history as well, including such notable bald men as Mahatma Ghandi, the man who help to kick the British out of India without resorting to any form of violence. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/bald-and-free-day/

Vet Nurse Day Veterinary Nurse Day was established to raise awareness of those men and women who work alongside the veterinarians every day to help heal, comfort, and protect our pets. Whether they’re working in the field on large animals like horses and cattle, or carefully handling the smallest of pets like mice or lizards, they’re a vitally important part of the care our pets receive. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/vet-nurse-day/

International Top Spinning Day The image of the spinning top is a powerful one, the image of an object only kept in place by motion and precarious laws of physics. They have been used as imagery in many things, including the idea that things must be held in a careful balance, and an indication that eventually all things wind down in the fullness of time. Most recently the spinning top has been used in Inception, creating a powerful connection between this rotating form and illusory stability. International Top Spinning Day celebrates these ideas and many more! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-top-spinning-day/

World Egg Day Arguably one of the oldest foods known to man, eggs have played an important role in our lives and health since time out of mind. They are packed full of protein, and also serve as the base for some of the most wonderful culinary additions, including that most perfect of condiments for sandwiches, mayonnaise. World Egg Day celebrates these delightful little packages of deliciousness, and the incredibly important role they play in our day to day lives. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/egg-day/
