No Bra Day Every year hundreds of thousands new cases of breast cancer occur in the United States alone, with approximately 250,000 of them being invasive forms of breast cancer, and an additional 2,600 cases being found in men. No Bra Day encourages women everywhere to go without their bra to raise awareness for breast cancer and the challenges that those with it faces. If you know someone who has been affected by Breast Cancer or just want to help continue the fight against it, No Bra Day is an opportunity to help those around you know that the fight is ongoing! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/no-bra-day/

Bring Your Teddy Bear to School or Work Day Celebrating Bring Your Teddy Bear To Work & School Day is as easy as following the instructions inherent in the name. Gather up your childhood buddy and take them into school or work with you, and trade stories of the games and life you lived with them. Some people have lots of stuffed bears still, including ones made by beloved grandparents or received as gifts. A few, a special few, have themselves a teddy bear still with them from their cribs. Share your fuzzy friends with others today, and let everyone know you still love them. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/bring-your-teddy-bear-to-work-school-day/

Emergency Nurses Day Promoted and sponsored by the Emergency Nurses Association and having originated in Australia back in 1989, Emergency Nurses Day is now an international celebration, intended to honour the hard work and dedication of emergency nurses all around the world. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/emergency-nurses-day/

Old Farmers Day Our society was built upon the rugged shoulders and stubborn personalities of farmers from around the world. So, it only makes sense that we celebrate their contributions and all that they have provided (and indeed continue to provide) us. Old Farmer’s Day intends to do just this. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/old-farmers-day/

Take Your Parents to Lunch Day Once you reach a certain age, doing anything with your parents seems instantly uncool, and the last thing you want to do is go out for lunch with them, especially at school. Well, that is all about to change. Take Your Parents To Lunch Day is a real, national holiday and is becoming increasingly popular and widely celebrated by kids and schools everywhere year after year. The purpose of it is not so much for parents to have an enjoyable lunch at the school canteen, but rather to give them a rare chance to get a real look at what is going on in the school kitchen and an insight into what their children are eating when out of their hands every day. That’s why Take Your Parents To Lunch Day is so great and should be encouraged. It’s a way for them to give their opinions and help improve the system and make the food options as healthy as possible. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/take-your-parents-to-lunch-day/

Trumka: ‘The stakes in the Missouri gubernatorial race are enormous’

Kansas City, MO – The race for Missouri governor is the most important gubernatorial race in the country, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka told roughly 200 delegates at the recent Missouri AFL-CIO’s 28th Biennial Convention in Kansas City, MO.

“The stakes are enormous,” Trumka said, noting that Attorney General Chris Koster opposes so-called “right-to-work” and his Republican opponent Eric Greitens has vowed to sign it into law.

“If we lose this race, Missouri will become a ‘right-to-work’ state,” Trumka said. “It’s that simple.

“I am not exaggerating when I say this is the most important gubernatorial race in the country,” he said. “As Attorney General, Chris Koster has fought with us and for us. He strongly opposes ‘right-to-work.’ He will invest in education and job training. And he will always give unions a seat at the table.

Schnuck disrepects his workers as UFCW 655 members reject proposal by 89%, authorize strike act

After proposing to gut its contract with United Food & Commercial Workers Local 655 – a proposal rejected and a strike authorized last week by an 89 percent margin – if there was ever a clear cut example of Schnucks CEO Todd Schnuck showing total disrespect for his own employees, it was his calling the voting meeting a “PR stunt to get attention.”

Ignoring the fact that union members have a legal right, and an obligation, to vote on a company offer, Schnuck disparaged his own employees with that comment in the local media after members soundly exercised their democratic rights to vote on a proposal the union and its rank-and-file negotiating committee unanimously urged their members to vote “no.”

In making dynamic, impassioned comments on the proposal that brought wild applause more than a dozen times from the 2,184 members present, Local 655 President David Cook said: “This contract is not acceptable today, not acceptable tomorrow, not acceptable ever!”

The membership agreed: 1,934 “no” votes to 250 “yes” votes. The meeting was held at the St. Charles Family Arena on Sept 26.

Ada Lovelace Day was created to celebrate one of the first computer programmers. As the daughter of the poet Lord Byron, Augusta Ada Byron, was brought up by her mother, Annabella, after he passed. Her mother feared that she would inherit her father’s poetic temperament, and gave Ada a strict upbringing of logic, science and mathematics. Ada became fascinated with mechanisms and designed steam flying machines, poring over the scientific magazines of the time and embracing the British Industrial revolution. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/ada-lovelace-day/

National Coming Out Day For time out of mind members of the LGBTQ community have had to hide in fear for their livelihood and their lives. Constant fear of being rejected by friends and loved ones, as well as the community of which they are a part, has led to many of them remaining in the proverbial closet. This means living a half-life at best, and hiding who you are from those who should be nearest and dearest to you. Coming Out Day challenges this ancient standard, and encourages LGBTQ people everywhere to stand proud and claim who they are, and thus reclaim their lives and sense of pride. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/coming-out-day/

Face Your Fears Day Take a moment to consider what your life might be like if you conquered some of your greatest fears. What would you do differently? Face Your Fears Day gives you the chance to stand up to your fears, overcome them, and to seize the day. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/face-your-fears-day/

National Handbag Day It’s no secret that many women love handbags, sometimes perhaps a little too much, but who would have thought that it would ever get to the point where an entire day of the year would be put aside especially for handbags to be celebrated in all their glory? Well, believe it or not, Handbag Day exists, and real people actually do take some time out of their day to celebrate it and pay tribute to their beloved collection of handbags as well as all those they wish they could afford. It is a day when women talk about handbags…even more than usual, both on the Internet, through blogs, and in real life with friends. It is a day where the greatest designs and designers are discussed and celebrated. And also a day through which the purchase of a new handbag, or bags, for the more extravagant, can be justified and needs no explanation. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/handbag-day/

World Homeless Day World Homeless Day was born out of discussions between aid workers around the world, all of whom were helping the homeless in their own countries. The aim and slogan of the Day is ‘locals act locally on a global day’. The emphasis is on giving hands-on aid that is sensitive to local needs, while being aware of the global problem of homelessness and feeling solidarity with other charity workers around the world. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-homeless-day/

World Mental Health Day World Mental Health Day was established in 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health. In some countries around the world, it forms just one part of the larger Mental Illness Awareness Week. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-mental-health-day/

Every year in the Scottish Highland Village of Carrbridge a competition is held, the World Porridge Making Championship, to determine the porridge champion who best exemplifies the flavor and experience of this food. But the Scots have always been known for having a progressive world view and to care deeply about people everywhere, and as such Carrbridge has come together with Mary’s Meals (https://www.marysmeals.org.uk/) to help provide rich nourishing porridge to children all over the world. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/porridge-day/

Beer & Pizza Day There’s little that makes a day as glorious as finishing it off with that perfect combination of beer and pizza. The foamy head on top of a glass of amber colored joy seems to be tailor made to go with the rich and cheesy texture of that favorite of treats, pizza. It’s little wonder that these two go together so well, the salty savory buttery crust of the pizza is reminiscent of that other favorite bar treat, the pretzel. Beer and Pizza Day reminds us to take a moment to indulge in this delightful combo, and remember the good things in life. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/beer-and-pizza-day/

Fire Prevention Day Fire Prevention Day exists both to raise awareness of practices that can help prevent these disasters, and to recognise the work of the fire-fighters who relieve them. It is also often used to commemorate particularly famous and devastating fires in individual communities, such as the Great Chicago Fire in North America. According to legend, this fire was started when a Mrs O’Leary’s milch cow kicked over a lantern in her shed. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/fire-prevention-day/

World Post Day Post Day was founded in the Swiss Capital, Bern, and made official by the UPU Congress in Tokyo, Japan in 1969. Post organisations worldwide use the event to promote new services, and increase awareness of the postal system. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/post-day/

Curious Events Day Curious Events Day celebrates the great mysteries of the world, possibly even greater ones than the ones I’ve already listed above. Does the Loch Ness Monster exist? How are crop circles made? Is the world really run by a reptilian elite race? https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/curious-events-day/

World Octopus Day Octopuses are worthy of appreciation for a number of reasons. First of all, they are one of earth’s great survivors. Indeed, despite their relatively short life span, octopus fossils date back more than 300 million years, meaning that they pre-date even dinosaurs. They are also highly intelligent, with around 500 million neurons located in their brains and arms, allowing them to bypass their insticts, learn lessons and solve problems. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-octopus-day/

National Frappe Day A hallmark of Greek coffee culture from the 1950s onwards, the humbly delicious frappe has earned a yearly celebration. The frappe is distinguished by being one of the few beverages improved by the use of instant coffee! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/frappe-day/

Bathtub Day In a world in which demands on your time are high it is reassuring to know there is one day in the year when you can reclaim the right to relax at your leisure. Bathtub Day is more than just an excuse to while away the time as you immerse yourself in the warm waters of your bathroom; it is a day to remember and rejoice in the introduction of the bathtub in England in 1828. How to celebrate this momentous occasion is an individual’s choice but options include turning your bathroom into a mini-spa, complete with scented candles and aromatherapy oils; inviting a partner or friend to share in the bathtub experience; watching a favourite film or television show while bathing; or simply locking the door, turning off the phone and enjoying a rare moment of solitude and peace, with a glass of wine by your side. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/bathtub-day/

World Smile Day Sometimes all it takes to make the day better is a smile, whether it’s one someone gives to you, or one you share with another. Little acts of kindness can bring a shining smile to someone who has otherwise had a terrible day, and it can change everything that follows. Whether it’s just a simple compliment, a cheery hello, or a gift of something small to help brighten their day, World Smile Day encourages you to take action to bring a few more smiles into the world. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/smile-day/

Locomotive to steam through Maplewood

Union Pacific says its No. 844 steam locomotive will leave its Cheyenne, Wyoming, base on Oct. 13 for a round trip taking it through nine states, going as far south as Memphis, according to Trains Magazine. It will steam through Maplewood on the way.

The train is scheduled to depart Kirkwood station headed for St. Louis at 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18, running south of Deer Creek, in Webster Groves, then into Maplewood along Greenwood Boulevard.

It’s due into downtown St. Louis at 1:30 p.m., overnight there, and depart at 8 a.m. on Wednesday. See the full schedule.

The engine was the last steam locomotive delivered to Union Pacific, built in 1944. It was originally built for high-speed passenger work. Commercial Union Pacific steam operations ended in the late 1950s, according to Wikipedia.
