Random Acts of Kindness Day “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”
– Leo Buscaglia https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/random-acts-of-kindness-day/

My Way Day has been created in celebration of that wonderful phrase “It’s my way or the high way”. The history of My Way Day is unclear but it believed to have been inspired by key events in the world happening because someone had a bold idea and they weren’t afraid to go through with it. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/my-way-day/

World Human Spirit Day So many of our statements nowadays end with ‘the world as we know it’. World Human Spirit Day is a celebration of the fact that what we know about our own world is limited and superficial. It is a day to wonder at our achievements on this planet as humans, and to contemplate the endless possibilities we have as spirits. A day to search within for contentedness and to embrace the fact that we do not have all the answers and that may be for the best. A day to give a higher power thanks for what we have and what we don’t have, for making us who we are and for giving us the ability to touch others. This day is a celebration of continuity, of hope, of awareness, an occasion for us all to connect spiritually, to gaze at the universe beyond our worldly bodies. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-human-spirit-day/

Daily Holidays - February 16

National Almond Day It’s generally believed and agreed by historians (and food historians in particular) that almonds were one of the earliest cultivated foods by mankind. Almond Day celebrates this and all things almond, and rightly so, given their high vitamin E content, their effectiveness at reducing cholesterol levels and helping with weight loss! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/almond-day/

Do A Grouch A Favor Day Have you done a grouch a favor today? If not then it’s likely that no one told you it was Do a Grouch a Favor Day, as doing a grouch a favor is what the day is all about. We all know a grouch at some point in our lives, and it is very likely that we’ve had phases of being grouchy ourselves. Sometimes another person doing us a favor is the last time, but other days a favor from someone, be they a close friend or a random stranger, is exactly what we need to break us out of our slump. Of course, there may not be any redemption for the grouchy neighbor who hates your dog, and your mailbox, and the way your lawn mower sounds, and the color of your house and…. Well, you get the point. Even if you have that person for a neighbor, doing them a well meaning favor would not go amiss on Do a Grouch a Favor Day. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/do-a-grouch-a-favor-day/

Innovation Day Spot a problem, think of a solution, and before you know it you’re innovating! Innovation Day is all about imagining new, better ways of doing things. How will you be innovative? https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/innovation-day/

Introduce A Girl to Engineering Day Engineering is typically a male-dominated arena – but beyond simply tinkering with and repairing equipment, engineering requires a flare for creativity and intelligence which the industry often misses out on due to so few women considering the career path. Introduce A Girl To Engineering Day is all about encouraging girls to consider a route into engineering, and inspiring a generation who might grow up to be the great innovators and problem solvers of the next generation! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/introduce-a-girl-to-engineering-day/

National Gumdrop Day Gummy, chewy, tasty sweets are the theme of Gumdrop Day, which presents you the opportunity (or the excuse) to eat as many gumdrops as possible (within reason, with consideration for your teeth, sugar levels and general health)! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/gumdrop-day/

National Hippo Day Bet you didn’t know that Hippo loosely translates to River Horse in ancient Greek. Hippo Day, then, celebrates the third largest mammal on Earth. Why not take some time to waddle in a mud bath, get angry with some tourists, and yawn a lot whilst opening your mouth really-really widely? https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/hippo-day/

Remember The Maine Day Maine is best known for her loss in Havana Harbor on the evening of 15 February 1898. Sent to protect U.S. interests during the Cuban revolt against Spain, she exploded suddenly, without warning, and sank quickly, killing nearly three quarters of her crew. The cause and responsibility for her sinking remained unclear after a board of inquiry investigated. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Maine_(ACR-1)

Single Awareness Day It’s a humorous holiday to celebrate being single, to share with single friends, to send each other presents or even order yourself some flowers. On this day many people wear green, as it is the complementary opposite of red. Another popular option is an absence of color (black), to symbolize an absence of celebration. One increasingly popular activity is to travel to Brazil and witness the Brazilian Carnival. The trip, coupled with the fact that Brazil doesn’t celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14, but in June, provides a temporary getaway from the neon pink of the Valentine’s holiday in the Western culture, by simply substituting it with another celebration. Some who celebrate Singles Awareness Day just want to remind romantic couples that they don’t need to be in a relationship to celebrate life, and that the key to being happy is being able to be happy with yourself. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/singles-awareness-day/

Daily Holidays - February 14

Valentines Day The day first became associated with romantic love within the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines&quot . In Europe, Saint Valentine's Keys are given to lovers "as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the giver’s heart", as well as to children, in order to ward off epilepsy (called Saint Valentine's Malady).[6] Valentine's Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valentine's_Day

Ferries Wheel Day Ride high, high in the sky (within the constraints of a Perspex box attached to a giant wheel); what better way to celebrate Ferris Wheel Day? https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/ferris-wheel-day/

International Book Giving Day Devoted to instilling a lifelong love of reading in children and providing access to books for children in need, Book Giving Day calls on volunteers to share their favourite book with a young reader. Although the holiday originated in the UK, book lovers around the world now join in the celebrations every year. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-book-giving-day/

National Tortellini Day Picture New Year celebrations in a fancy setting with party-goers sitting round a gaily festooned table consuming…soup. Vegetarian party? Cook burnt the roast? Effect of the crisis? The answer is tradition, long and glorious tradition. In Italy, clear soup appears on the festive menu because it is enriched with a generous portion of tortellini, thus elevating the dish to five-star status. Tortellini Day is the right moment to try some of the many variations of tortellini, including in soup. Tortellini are made from thin fine pasta wrapped around delectable fillings of meat, ham or cheese, served with various sauces, or soup. Most Italians agree its filling must include a blend of prosciutto, mortadella, and Parmigiano-Reggiano. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/tortellini-day/

Employee Legal Awareness Day was established by an Australian lawyer, Paul Brennan. His aim was to emphasise the importance of legal education for employees and small businesses and reduce their risk of legal problems. The day isn’t only about laws though, Brennan also suggests that employees should increase their awareness of their company’s policies. According to him, it is important for employees to have a copy of the employer’s handbook, where you can find information about bereavement policy, attendance and punctuality, conflict of interest statements and non-disclosure agreements. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/employee-legal-awareness-day/

Madly In Love With Me Day Every year on the day before you lavish the significant other in your life with all your love, step back and prepare by focusing as much attention on yourself. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/madly-in-love-with-me-day/

World Radio Day The world used to be a much bigger place, at least when you consider the difficulty involved with transmitting information from place to place. In the beginning we simply had to walk and talk to one another, and then we were able to write and exchange letters. Ideas and music travelled the world at a snail’s pace as compared to today. But then the radio was invented, and suddenly transmitting ideas hundreds of miles became a relatively trivial matter! The world became connected, and it would never be the same. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/radio-day/

National Plum Pudding Day is dedicated to a mouthwatering treat that, surprisingly enough, contains no plums! In the 17th century when it was first created, plums were referred to as raisins or any other type of dried fruits. Plum pudding (aka Christmas pudding) is a steamed or boiled pudding usually served during the holiday season. Plum pudding is composed of nutmeg, raisins, nuts, apples, cinnamon, dates, and many other ingredients. In England, it is tradition to have every person a household simultaneously hold onto the wooden spoon together to help stir the batter. As they stir it they also have to make a wish! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/plum-pudding-day/

Darwin Day There was a pivotal moment in history when we began to look at ourselves, and at life, in a new way. It changed not just how we perceived ourselves, but how we were related to all the other life and species on Earth. We came to realize, along the way, that we were kin, however distant, of every lifeform on Earth, and that moment was both aggrandizing and humbling, all at once. That moment was when Charles Darwin brought the idea of Law of Natural Selection into the limelight of the scientific world, and we began to see with clear eyes how everything, absolutely everything, was connected. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/darwin-day/

Lost Penny Day When you think about it, pennies are a real nuisance. They’re small and seemingly almost worthless, and despite putting them safely in your wallet or purse, they always seem to wind up blocking the filter on your washing machine, slipping down the sides of the cushions on your favourite armchair, or getting sucked up the vacuum cleaner. Nevertheless, on one special day each year we can take the time to gather up those ever-wandering coins and finally do something more useful with them that we usually do by donating them to a charity of our choice. Lost Penny Day is the perfect day to take a moment to recognize that despite the fact that pennies may not seem like they are worth much, they can still be found and used to help those in need to whom each and every penny counts and adds up. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/lost-penny-day/

World Marriage Day Marriage is a hugely important institution in many parts of the world, and symbolises the formalisation of a relationship between a loving couple. Marriage Day celebrates everything about marriage, and is a great day to propose to your partner, or to get hitched! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/marriage-day/

Make A Friend's Day Some say that the measure of our lives can be seen in our friends. We have all sorts of friends, best ones, long distance ones and even ones that we call acquaintances. They help us through the bad times and dance along in the good times with us. There are friends who are the family that we choose and we would lay down our lives for. These are the bindings on our hearts that we would never want to get rid of. On Make a Friend Day, we can take the time to perhaps add another to this list of buddies! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/make-a-friend-day/

Cream Cheese Brownie Day Wow! Cream cheese brownie day? Have we all died and gone to heaven? I am not going to complain at having a justifiable reason to indulge… are you? Let’s face it when you think of cheesecake you think of that creamy colored, tangy bite of feathery goodness with a graham cracker crust. How on earth could you pair that with the fudgy, gooey sweetness of a brownie without creating a culinary war on your taste buds? Quite easily in fact, and I thank that wonderful person who was the first to think of it – they are my hero! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cream-cheese-brownie-day/

Umbrella Day celebrates this useful device that has been with us for quite a long time, and has served every purpose from practical to fanciful since its creation. Just how long has the umbrella been with us? Long enough that it’s permeated every culture across the globe, and originated from more than one. The oldest recorded umbrella appeared in 21 AD, in Ancient China. Though to be fair, this really was just the first recorded collapsible umbrella, Qin Shihuang’s tomb revealed a terracotta army carriage that had a permanently open umbrella attached to it dating from 210 BC. They were also found in Nineveh, Persepolis, Ancient Egypt, and Greece, just to name a few. Needless to say the umbrella has a long and noble history. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/umbrella-day/

Plimsoll Day. Plimsoll day is dedicated to the man who made commercial sailing safer – Samuel Plimsoll. So, look to the water ways my friends and give thanks for all the awesome items in your house that made it safely to the shores and into your home! There was a time in England when many commercial vessels were traveling on the rivers so overfilled that accidents abounded. With the laws that Mr. Plimsoll championed, now the Plimsoll lines can be found painted on ships all over the world! Safe shipping around the seas of the world point back Mr. Plimsoll. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/plimsoll-day/

Molasses Bar Day If you’ve never had molasses, then Molasses Bar Day would be the perfect and most apt day to try it! Molasses, or treacle in British English, is essentially a thick sugary syrup made from sugarcane or sugar beets that contains large amounts of calcium, iron and magnesium. Beet molasses is 50% sugar by weight, and sugar is sometimes extracted from beet molasses through molasses desugarization. Cane molasses is more commonly used in cooking. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/molasses-bar-day/
