Email to Senator McCaskill

Senator:
I am wholly disappointed with the comments attributed to you regarding the candidacy of Senator Bernie Sanders for President. You are certainly entitled to support whomever you believe to be the best person for the position, however your comments were very dismissive of the Senator and his supporters. I greatly object to your characterization that the Senator is promoting "extreme" positions as that is simply not the case. He has to my knowledge always been a supporter of the working people and the average middle class members of our society. Comparing him to Pat Buchanan, Ron & Rand Paul with their right wing positions is simply beyond absurd. I would not be too quick anoint the Candidacy of Former Secretary Clinton and to dismiss Senator Sanders as I recall in 2008 Mrs. Clinton was considered the sure thing and I believe things turned out a bit different.

Under cover of darkness, female janitors face rape and assault

https://www.revealnews.org/article/under-cover-of-darkness-female-janitors-face-rape-and-assault/

It was the isolation that made Erika Morales most wary of her job as a night shift janitor. The solitude had begun to feel like a trap.

Then one fall evening, after everyone else had gone home, she arrived to clean a Bank of America branch. In the binding silence of the empty building, she scrubbed toilets and vacuumed hallways. She’d catch her distorted reflection in the window, though she knew there was only darkness on the other side of the glass.

“There’s no one to ask for help when certain things happened and you screamed,” she said. “No one can hear. And there are certain places where there are no cameras. There’s no sound. There’s nobody.”

During her shift, the only person she’d often come into contact with was her supervisor. It was his job to drive around town to check on Morales and other janitors who worked for a subsidiary of ABM Industries Inc., the largest cleaning company in the country. The janitors he oversaw mostly worked solo, at low-slung offices and health clinics across Bakersfield, in California’s Central Valley.

Expert: UAW talks could bring end to 2-tier wage system

The UAW could win the end of its second-tier wages through a phase-out period during upcoming contract talks, while tier-one workers could get a modest raise, one labor expert said Tuesday.

Kristin Dziczek, director of the Industry and Labor Group for the Center for Automotive Research, said she expects the UAW and Detroit automakers will agree to give first-tier employees who haven’t had a raise in eight to 10 years a small one, while entry-level workers would eventually become first-tier workers over a grow-in period.

Canadian auto workers have a 10-year system in which the hourly rate for entry-level workers progressively increases, and Dziczek expects the UAW to adopt a similar eight-year grow-in, which would help automakers keep labor costs down.

“I think the companies pretty much realize they’re going to have to give the first tier a raise and that the second tier will need to come up,” Dziczek said. “The eight-year grow in is not an agreed-upon thing going in; I think they know they have to do something about second-tier.”

Asthma, ticks and heatstroke: Here’s what climate change could mean for your health

Sure, climate change means average temperatures are getting higher and sea levels are rising. But here are some repercussions that hit closer to home, affecting public health.

In St. Louis especially, those concerns include intensified pollen counts, more frequent stretches of extreme heat and worse tick seasons. All are detailed in the National Climate Assessment, a compilation of research published by the federal government last year. Environmental organizations shined a spotlight on the report Wednesday at a press conference in St. Louis.

NGA project could cost city and state $130 million

The city of St. Louis is estimating it will cost $130 million to bring the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency to the north side.

The figure was released Wednesday during a meeting of the Board of Aldermen’s Housing, Urban Development and Zoning committee. That money would come primarily from city and state sources, although those were not made public.

The committee is considering a board bill to authorize a $20 million loan to help the city acquire land within the NGA footprint. That vote was delayed when several members asked for a cost benefit analysis of the entire project.

Strawberry Parfait Day, dedicated to that delicious treat that is so welcome during the hot summer months, and craved even in the face of the biting cold of winter by the true connoisseur. The exotic sounding name brings to mind the quaint little street-side cafes of Paris, where the treat so many of us are familiar with found its origin. It’s name describes the treat to a tee, Parfait means, simply, “Perfect”. But a perfect what? The word parfait has actually been used to describe quite a number of different things, and not all of them are delicious layered deserts.

In the UK, the word is actually used to describe a smooth meat paste, also known as a pate, that is traditionally made from the liver of a chicken or duck, mixed with a strong liquer of one form or another. This is certainly not what Strawberry Parfait Day is about! Instead, our parfait are those popularized by ice cream shops all over the world, especially those served in layers of delectable ice-creams and gelatins with drool worthy fruit toppings.

Such was the dedication to making this the perfect treat, that special glasses were designed solely for the purpose of showing off the artistically layered designs made during the treats creation. Parfaits can include any combination of ingredients, from creams and fruits, nuts, liquor, even gelatin or granola. They’ve crossed the line from being merely a dessert food, to being deemed appropriate for any time of day, with just a twist on exactly what’s included.

What of the strawberry I hear you say? I do distinctly remember hearing something about strawberries that were intended to go with this parfait. Right you are! The strawberry as we know it today, that delicious, fragrant red fruit with the jaunty green cap, was first developed in Brittany, France, during the 1750’s. It might be thought that the French were dedicating their time solely to the perfection of this divine treat! Prior to this the fruit had a long and respectable history throughout the world, but it was in France that it became… parfait! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/strawberry-parfait-day/

Catfish Day Catfish Day is a holiday that dates back to June 25, 1987, when U.S. President Ronald Reagan opened a presidential address by speaking about the culinary pleasures of eating catfish, and farmed catfish in particular. The President then went on to explain how catfish farming was creating both a stable income for farmers and an affordable food source for Americans.

The holiday is now traditionally celebrated on the anniversary of President Reagan’s address. It is observed primarily in the United States, by preparing and eating catfish.

Catfish are any fish from a number of species that usually feature whisker-like barbels near the mouth. They are usually bottom-feeders in freshwater, and many species are farmed or fished for food. Although catfish is a popular dish in many regions, it is extremely popular as a breaded and fried dish in the southern United States, where its popularity indirectly led to the creation of the holiday.

Several American cities now have festivals known as “Catfish Days” in late July, featuring sporting events, fairs, and other activities. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/catfish-day/

Color TV Day There is an innovation that many of us take for granted every day. Whether we’re sitting at our computers, watching television with the family, or even playing with our handheld games, we are inundated with a bright parade of colors. Color TV Day reminds us that this hasn’t always been the case, when Television was first introduced we had nothing but black and white images, really more of a myriad shade of grey. In 1951, an event came to pass that changed the future of broadcast entertainment forever.

The first commercial broadcast was a variety show, containing a number of entertainers, whose name would go on to become legend, including Ed Sullivan. While this broadcast was only available to those who owned a color-ready TV, it was the first step to changing everything.

TV first started being experimented with in the late 19th century, but electronics were simply not advanced enough at that point to make the process work effectively. Another 30 years passed by before anything like a successful television broadcast system was put together. But even then, it wasn’t until 1935 that regular broadcasts black and white broadcasts were being sent out, and those only contained 108 lines per frame. This was the beginning of a massive boom in broadcasting, and by 1950 there were 6 million televisions in the United States alone.

Color television had been in development as early as 1897, but it didn’t come to fruition until 1928. At this point a color broadcast was demonstrated, but the actual first broadcast didn’t take place until 1938. These were just the testing broadcasts, and it wasn’t until 1954 that the first national broadcast occurred on January 1st, heralding in a new era of broadcast entertainment. This was just the beginning of a turning point, and it wasn’t until 1965 that an official transition took place. This was a huge day for color TV, when an announcement was made that over half of all prime-time broadcasting would be done in color. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/color-tv-day/

Global Beatles Day it was in the year 1960, on a foggy island found Nor-Norwest of Spain that music history changed forever. Four young proto-gods came together to form what would be one of the most influential rock bands to ever come out of England, if not the entire world. We’re speaking, of course, of the Beatles. Paul McCartney, George Harrison, John Lennon, and Ringo Starr. These four boys came together to change the world one song at a time.

While they started their career like most musical groups, playing cheap dive clubs all over their home town of Liverpool, their manager was an artisan of his craft and helped guide them to rise to their potential. Their explosion in popularity came on the heels of their first hit song “Love Me Do”, and love them we did, it didn’t take long before the entire world was caught up in Beatlemania.

Global Beatles Day celebrates the huge influence they brought to the world, not just with their musical sounds, but with the values they professed and believed in. Throughout their entire career they promoted the idea that we could all live in a peaceful world, built on the ideas of truth, love, and reaching beyond the boundaries of current human consciousness. Through their music they instigated changes in the ways people express themselves, fashion trends, sex, art, and the embracing of the imagination. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/global-beatles-day/

National Pralines Day National Pralines Day is observed annually on June 24th. This day honors the praline, a confection made from nuts (whether in whole pieces or ground) and sugar syrup. Pralines may also refer to any chocolate cookie containing the ground powder of nuts.

There are a variety of pralines to be enjoyed:

Belgian Pralines – contain a hard chocolate shell with a softer, sometimes liquid, filling.
French Pralines – a combination of almonds and caramelized sugar.
American Pralines – contain milk or cream and are softer and creamier, resembling fudge.
At the Chateau of Vaux-le-Vicomte during the 17th century, French sugar industrialist, Marshal du Plessis-Praslin (1598-1675), originally inspired the early pralines. These first pralines were whole almonds, individually coated in caramelized sugar. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/days-2/national-pralines-day-june-24/

Swim A Lap Day Swim a Lap Day is a day to get your snorkel and goggles on and patronize your local swimming pool. Swimming is a great way of getting exercise, especially for those who have health problems that make traditional exercise difficult due to weakness or difficulty moving. Swimming has been an activity humans have indulged in at least as far back as 7,000 years ago, a time from which depictions of this activity can be seen in stone age paintings.

People have been engaging in swimming for all these years for many reasons, with recreation being by far the most common among them. Swimming is, in fact, ranked among the most popular forms of physical activity, even among otherwise sedentary individuals. The buoyant nature of water makes it much easier on those with physical limitations to get out and have a good time, and the act of coursing through the water is often described as feeling a bit like flying!

Swimming has also been shown to be excellent for your health Those engaged in swimming tend to engage in the activity for longer than other forms of exercise, and the act of swimming often engages the entire body while moving through the water This also results in the body drawing on large supplies of oxygen during almost all stages of the activity Other benefits seen from this activity include a reduction in stress related illnesses by reduction of the same, and it can even improve posture!

Swimming is also commonly participated in as a competitive sport and artistic display. Whether it’s simple speed swimming or synchronised water based dance performances, swimming has found it’s way into many sport venues, including the Olympic Games. Due to it’s unique engagement of muscle groups, swimming segments are also commonly included in multi-segmented sport competitions, including triathlons and Iron Man competitions. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/swim-a-lap-day/

Stenger says St. Louis County won't go along with city push to raise minimum wage

St. Louis’ efforts to raise the minimum wage of $7.65 have sparked a host of questions. One of the biggest is whether St. Louis County would follow suit. It's a pressing concern because some businesses have said they would move to the county if the city approves Alderman Shane Cohn's bill to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2020.

St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger has now provided a definitive answer to that question: No.

Candy Month While we may celebrate candy all year long, June has the privilege of being the official Candy Month. No one seems entirely sure why or how June became Candy Month but, when the title gives you licence to enjoy as much guilt-free candy as you like*, who cares?! That’s not to say June is without relevant history: it was in June 1963 that US confectioner Hershey’s acquired Harry Burnett Reese’s business (yes, the original Reese of Peanut Butter Cup fame) and it was in June 1904 that George Cadbury and his staff invented Dairy Milk.

Some cultures consider chocolate to be a type of candy while others consider candy an exclusive name for hard-boiled sweets. However, it’s quite a generic term and can be used to describe toffees, marshmallows, licorice, jelly sweets, British rock and more. Yum!

* Please enjoy responsibly. Your dentist cares about your teeth and so do we. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/candy-month/
