National Peach Ice Cream Day Peaches are a summer fruit, and Peach Ice Cream Day is a way to celebrate their goodness while enjoying a cooling delicious dessert.

Peaches are native to China and were taken to America by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. Commercial cultivation has made them the second biggest fruit crop in the US (after apples). Peach ice cream is generally only made during the summer months and can be enjoyed in a sundae, as an ice-cream cone, on top of slices of peach, or simply on its own in a dish. It doesn’t need sprinkles, sauces or toppings as they can overpower the delicate flavor.

Celebrate Peach Ice Cream Day by making your own in an ice-cream maker. It’s easy to do and you can use big chunks of fresh peach, like the old-fashioned ice-cream used to be. Be generous with your scoop! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/peach-ice-cream-day/

Wrong Way Corrigan Day J uly 17th is known as National Wrong Way Corrigan Day.

Douglas Corrigan was an Irish-American aviator who “accidentally” flew to Ireland on a flight from Long Beach, CA, to New York. Apparently, Corrigan made a navigational error during his flight, caused by heavy cloud coverage…he somehow ended up in Ireland! Was it a true error? No one will never know, as Corrigan never admitted to intentionally flying to a different country. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/

Yellow Pig Day Yellow Pig Day originated in the 1960s when two math students from Princeton spent a long time obsessively analysing the number 17. It seems that they went a little mad eventually, and decided to invent the concept of a yellow pig with 17 toes, 17 teeth, and so forth… Now Yellow Pig Day is an important part of the academic calendar, and is celebrated with cake, carols, parades and general revelry. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/yellow-pig-day/

Man killed after towboat hits Eads Bridge, knocking worker off platform

A man working on the Eads Bridge was killed about 3:15 p.m. Thursday when a southbound towboat pushing barges ran into the bridge, St. Louis Fire Department officials said.

The impact caused the man to fall from some scaffolding on which he was working and land on a barge. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

No other information about the accident or the victim was available.

The bridge was closed to traffic for a time. MetroLink used a shuttle to transport its riders between its East St. Louis and Busch Stadium stops for a time, but train service resumed shortly before 5 p.m.

Cell Phone Courtesy Month We all know the situation: being subjected to someone else’s conversation while in a public space. Speaking on a cell phone makes some of us forget our manners! Celebrate Cell Phone Courtesy Month by following these tips for cell phone etiquette.

When you are in a meeting, don’t check your phone constantly for texts and emails. Concentrate on the people you are with.

Set your cell phone to silent or vibrate when in a courtroom, theatre, or place of worship.

Don’t embarrass yourself; if you need to make a call which you know is going to get intense and emotional, save it for when you are somewhere private. The rest of the world doesn’t need to know about your relationship issues!

Finally, check your personal volume control. It’s all too easy to start yelling into your cellphone. Everyone in your vicinity will appreciate your good manners in avoiding “cell yell”! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cell-phone-courtesy-month/

National Gummy Worm
Day Gummi worms are one of the most popular gummi candies, originally created by a German company called ‘Trolli’ in 1981. Celebrate Gummi Worm Day with a packet of your favourite type of gummi worms! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/gummi-worm-day/

National Pet Fire Safety Day The combined efforts of the Kennel Club and ADT Security Services led to the first Pet Fire Safety Day being held in the late 2000s. The idea behind the event is to make pet owners aware of the hazards their beloved cat, dog, or other animal could pose in the home with regard to fire. Many fires are caused by pets, especially when they are left alone in a property and the intention is that by highlighting the dangers to owners it can help in preventing them.

Pet owners should take advantage of the day to discuss who in a home is responsible for helping a pet escape in the event of a blaze and carry out some practice escape drills. They can also use Kennel Club advice to pet proof their home against fires and install a pet alert notice in a window for use by emergency services. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/pet-fire-safety-day/

Tapioca Pudding Day Tapioca Pudding Day could well be the day to redeem the nightmares of school puddings and rediscover the delights of tapioca when the mysterious grey sludge is actually done properly.

Luckily, modern cooks and recipe-book writers have exerted a bit more imagination on the question of how best to use the cassava root flour, so you’ll be able to find many more appealing variations on the old classic.

Start with tapioca flour, or pearls or even whole root. Try it with cream, milk or coconut milk. Mix in spices, fruit or citrus juices. Layer it with chocolate or jam or tasty syrups. Make it thin and runny, or chunky and firm. Try whipping in an egg or two. Explore variants from every continent. There are even savoury puddings, if you don’t have such a sweet tooth.

Then be thankful it’s just once a year. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/tapioca-pudding-day/

Bastille Day Bastille Day is the name given in English-speaking countries to the French National Day, which is celebrated on 14 July each year. In France, it is formally called La Fête nationale (French pronunciation: [la fɛːt nasjɔˈnal]; The National Celebration) and commonly Le quatorze juillet (French pronunciation: [lə.katɔʁz.ʒɥiˈjɛ]; the fourteenth of July).

The French National Day commemorates the beginning of the French Revolution with the Storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789,[1][2] as well as the Fête de la Fédération which celebrated the unity of the French people on 14 July 1790. Celebrations are held throughout France. The oldest and largest regular military parade in Europe is held on the morning of 14 July, on the Champs-Élysées in Paris in front of the President of the Republic, along with other French officials and foreign guests.[3][4] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bastille_Day

Pandemonium Day Chaos, madness and unexpected surprises abound on Pandemonium Day, when nothing can be predicted and everything can go wrong. Embrace the pandemonium, and do something crazy! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/pandemonium-day/

Shark Awareness Day Contrary to expectations, the purpose of Shark Awareness Day is not to stand on the beach and shout out warnings to terrified swimmers and surfers, despite the hours of innocent fun that can provide.

It’s true that sharks are impressive hunters and predators, yet the sad fact remains that these magnificent creatures are more threatened by people than we are by sharks. The worldwide demand for shark-fin soup, shark-tooth medallions, and a false sense of security on beaches everywhere, all combine to leave sharks persecuted and endangered, with millions of them being killed each year.

Like top predators in any ecosystem, sharks play an essential role in keeping the seas healthy and productive. Whilst no-one is suggesting we go out and hug a Great White on Shark Awareness Day, it’s the least we can do to respect these wonderful creatures and let them be. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/shark-awareness-day/

French fries are often complimented with ketchup, ranch dressing, vinegar, mayonnaise, honey mustard, cheese, gravy, or chili. Sometimes the fries are made from sweet potatoes instead of potatoes, are baked instead of fried or are cut up into unusual shapes such as curly fries, waffles fries, crinkle cut fries or tornado fries.

The expression “French Fried Potatoes” first occurs in print, in English, in the 1856 work Cookery for Maids of All Work by E. Warren. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/

The Bernie Store

Just received my coffee cups ordered in late May. They are very nice and I am more than pleased. Turnaround time was not as fast as I would have liked (I wanted them to materialize when i placed the order), but certainly more than acceptable.

National Pecan Pie Day National Pecan Pie Day is observed annually on July 12th. The delicious pecan pie is made primarily with corn syrup, pecan nuts, salt and vanilla flavoring with some variations including sugar syrup and molasses or maple syrup. Chocolate and bourbon whiskey may also be added to the pie recipe and is a popular addition in some areas. Pecan pie is often served with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Pecan pie is considered a specialty of Southern U.S. cuisine.

The attempts that have been made to trace this dish’s origin have not found any recipes dated earlier than 1897, even though there are claims made of the pie existing in the early 1800?s in Louisiana. Well known cookbooks such as Fannie Farmer and The Joy of Cooking did not include this dessert until 1940.

Pecan pie was significantly popularized by the makers of Karo syrup. Their company has claimed that the pie was a “discovery”, in the 1930?s, by a corporate sales executive’s wife, as a “new use for corn syrup”. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/

Simplicity Day Author, naturalist, philosopher, historian, tax resister, abolitionist, development critic, surveyor, and leading transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau was born on July 12, 1817. National Simplicity Day is observed on July 12th in his honor. Thoreau was an advocate for living a life of simplicity.

Thoreau (July 12, 1817 – May 6, 1862) is well-known, by many, for his book “Walden”, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings. He asserted that: “ as he simplifies his life, the laws of the universe will appear less complex”. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/

Due to their superior taste, Rainiers are considered a premium cherry.

As part of it’s Tree-to-Table program, on July 11, in honor of National Rainier Cherry Day, the Northwest Cherry Growers have hand-picked one restaurant in each state that will take part in their program in which each of the 50 restaurants will be dishing up at least one signature menu item featuring fresh cherries from the Northwest highlighting delicious Rainier cherries. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/
