Former A&P exec to serve 3 years for fraud scheme

John Moritz, the former A&P senior executive who pled guilty to charges of using company resources to fund a event ticket business run for his personal gain, was sentenced to
36 months in prison, U.S. attorney Paul J. Fishman said.

As previously reported, Moritz, a SVP of marketing for the Montvale, N.J., retailer, between December of 2010 and December of 2011 arranged for A&P to purchase thousands of tickets to sporting events, concerts and shows presumably for their use to reward employees and business partners. Moritz however sold the tickets over the Internet, admitting in court he fraudulently obtained more than $1.2 million selling more than 7,000 tickets for tickets including the Super Bowl, concerts by Bon Jovi and Lady Gaga, and New York Yankees playoff tickets.

Moritz concealed the scheme by directing certain ticket vendors to not issue invoices for the tickets; and others to issue invoices of less than $100,000 in order to stay within his spending limits; and for tickets to be delivered to his home or dropped off in person, rather than be sent to the retailer’s headquarters.

Wage growth in the U.S. is stuck in the '70s

When Jamaad Reed started his job as a cashier at a Wal-Mart near Cincinnati, he made $8.15 an hour. That was two years ago. Since then, he has seen a couple of raises, which have meant his wage has kept up with inflation — but just barely. As of March of this year, Reed was making $9.05 an hour.

“I'm stuck,” he said recently. “You know what I'm saying? I feel like I'm stuck in the same spot.”

"Stuck" is a pretty good word to describe wages for most American workers over the last few decades. Not just in the case of lower-wage workers like Reed, but along most of the income spectrum, except for those at the very, very top.

In fact, most American workers have seen little to no growth since the late 1970s, if you adjust for inflation, according to Elise Gould. She's an economist with the Economic Policy Institute and author of a new study that analyzes wage data from census surveys over the last several decades.

Millions Struggle To Get Enough To Eat Despite Jobs Returning

The number of U.S. families that struggled to get enough to eat last year was essentially unchanged from the year before, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's latest report on "food security."

The agency says that about 17.5 million families — or 1 in 7 — were food insecure last year. That means that at some point during the year, the household had trouble feeding all of its members. In 2012, the number was 17.6 million.

The number of households experiencing what the government calls "very low food security" — which means people actually miss meals or cut back their intake because they don't have enough money for food — was also essentially unchanged last year at 6.8 million households.

Anti-hunger groups say the fact that so many families are still struggling to put enough food on the table, even as the economy improves, is a sign that more needs to be done to help them out.

Firing of gay teachers at Cor Jesu draws outcry

Cor Jesu is located in Afton, MO a South St. Louis Suburb

The termination of two gay faculty members at Cor Jesu, the all girls Catholic high school in the Affton area, has prompted an outcry from alumnae.

In the last several weeks, alumnae have created a private Facebook group with more than 2,000 members in support of Olivia Reichert and Christina Gambaro urging supporters to call and write to Cor Jesu leaders and voice their concerns.

That outcry has led some to vow to no longer financially support Cor Jesu and encourage others to also withhold donations.

Cor Jesu is in the midst of its “One Heart, One Spirit, One Vision” capital campaign for a new chapel, gym, student commons, additional parking and to grow its endowment fund.

Nixon Hopes Centene Expansion Will Trigger More North County Projects

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon says that Centene Corporation’s plans to build a new claims processing center in Ferguson doesn’t just create jobs.

It’s also about sending a message.

"We're very heartened by their willingness to make an investment,” Nixon said Tuesday. “It now sends a signal, not only in St. Louis but around the world that North County is open for business."

Nixon offered up praise for Centene at the beginning of his luncheon address to members of the Regional Chamber and Growth Association.

No skin thick enough: The daily harassment of women in the game industry - NSFW

In my opinion this is an exceptionally sad state of affairs, that anyone undergo harassment. I have blanked out words that might be offensive in this post, however they are very much present on the linked article.

Content warning: This post contains graphic language, slurs and triggering content

"Women are the (******) of gender," the email said. "If you killed yourself, I wouldn’t even (****) the corpse."

I blinked at my phone, fighting simultaneous urges to hurl my phone across the room in anger and cry. Later that day, someone texted me my address — telling me they’d "See me when I least expected it."

I haven’t been out to my car at night by myself since January 2nd.

My name is Brianna Wu. I lead a development studio that makes games. Sometimes, I write about issues in the games industry that relate to the equality of women. My reward is that I regularly have men threatening to rape and commit acts of violence against me.

Home Depot probes possible credit card data breach

NEW YORK (AP) — Home Depot may be the latest retailer to suffer a credit card data breach.

The Atlanta-based home improvement retailer told The Associated Press Tuesday that it is looking into "unusual activity" and that working with both banks and law enforcement.

"Protecting our customers' information is something we take extremely seriously, and we are aggressively gathering facts at this point while working to protect customers," said Paula Drake, a spokeswoman at Home Depot, declining to elaborate. She said the retailer would notify customers immediately if it confirms a breach.

Shares of Home Depot Inc. fell $1.88, or 2 percent, to close at $91.15.
