Crush a Can Day You know you want to, so don’t hold back when it comes to squashing those cans on Crush a Can Day. Not only does this day give you the opportunity of crushing, squeezing and bending cans into satisfyingly small shapes, it’s also a chance to share can compression fun with family and friends. A fantastic stress buster, can squashing is also a great way to get more cans into a smaller space at recycling facilities, so get squishing those cans! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/crush-a-can-day/

Ancestor Appreciation Day Many of us are completely unaware of our ancestors and the lives they lived, yet they almost certainly went a long way towards shaping our habits, traditions and values today. Fortunately, the annually-celebrated Ancestor Appreciation Day gives people a reminder to learn more about those who came before us. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/ancestor-appreciation-day/

World Tourism Day Travel has been said to broaden the mind, exploring the world and seeing the broad vistas and cultures that the people of the world offer. Tourism can describe travel for pleasure both foreign and domestic, and has been happening as long as long as mankind. Tourism Day is your opportunity to broad your own world a little, find a location you’ve always wanted to make time to visit, and finally get around to making time to do it. So find your inner traveler and get out there and experience the places you’ve always wanted to see. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/tourism-day/

Lumberjack Day Monty Python famously sang the Lumberjack Song and a rendition of this would be appropriate for Lumberjack Day. The history of this celebration dates back to the mid-2000s when Marianne Ways and Colleen AF Venable decided it was time to honor this venerable profession. Venable herself worked as a lumberjack although she has admitted that the original idea for the day was conceived as an excuse to go out and eat pancakes and waffles with friends. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/lumberjack-day/

Johnny Appleseed Day What many people don’t know is that Johnny Appleseed was no mere legend, but was in fact a missionary known by the name of John Chapman. Born in Leominster, Massachussets in 1774. While the most common display of the man who would be known as Johnny Appleseed is of him randomly spreading apple seeds everywhere, the truth of his methods were a bit more pragmatic. He travelled throughout Pennsylvania, Ontario, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, and the lands that would become West Virginia planting nurseries. He would fence them in and leave them in the care of a neighbor who would then sell shares in the trees, and then come back every year or two to tend them. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/johnny-appleseed-day/

Love Note Day Love Note Day is a day to tell someone you love them, by writing a message of love in the form of a note. Though the traditional way of doing this is in handwritten form, eCards are another way of sending out a love message on this particular day. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/love-note-day/

Family Day As the name suggests, Family Day is an event that is intended to allow loved ones to take a respite from their daily lives and spend quality time together. One of the best things about this occasion is that there is no single “requirement” for the activities to be celebrated; Family Day is a flexible as it is relaxing. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/family-day/

National Psychotherapy Day If you tell someone that you are celebrating Psychotherapy Day they will probably say ‘you need your head examined’ or some other joking remark, or maybe they will say that people who can afford psychotherapy don’t need a special day. Psychotherapy Day was founded in 2012 by a group of professionals and students and is designed to combat misconceptions and raise awareness of the vital work that is done by therapists in helping the one in four people who suffer from mental illness as well as those with emotional problems. The colour turquoise is worn to show support for Psychotherapy Day and can be combined with their logo of a turquoise counselling chair on a black background. It is an ideal time to talk, write, read or blog about psychotherapy in order to break down stigmas and worries, to volunteer or donate to community mental health centres and to share psychotherapy research.https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/psychotherapy-day/

Cooking Day We rush and we scramble trying to make it through our day, rushed for breakfast, rushed for lunch (a half hour? You have to be kidding!) and exhausted for dinner. Who has time to cook anymore? Do we even know how anymore? Cooking Day reminds us that there’s nothing that quite matches the flavor and comfort of a delicious home cooked meal, and that learning how to cook is an important skill to enhance our health and pass tradition on to our friends and family. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cooking-day/

Comic Book Day In 1837 there came a small, seemingly inconsequential shift in the way stories were told. One Obadiah Oldbuck was drawn into existence as a series of sequential pictures with text captions. It was originally created with the purpose of being a diversion for the creator and his friends, but all too unexpected it became incredibly popular in both the US and France. This is often considered the first comic, and Rodolphe Töpffer is often considered the father of the genre. Comic Book Day honors this man and everything that has come to follow from that first humble publication. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/comic-book-day/

World Pharmacists Day World Pharmacists Day was the brainchild of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), with the council of this organization voting to establish the event in the late 2000s during a conference they staged in Istanbul, Turkey. The aim of the day is to bring attention to pharmacies and the positive benefits they offer when it comes to health and FIP encourages all its members to get involved to make the event a success. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-pharmacists-day/

National Cherries Jubilee Day There are many special days that celebrate different types of food but it is quite rare to find a day that is devoted to just one particular dish. Cherries Jubilee Day is set aside to celebrate a dessert that takes cherries and turns them into something spectacular. Fresh cherries are cooked in a sweet sauce into which warmed liqueur, usually kirsch or fruit brandy, is mixed and set alight before being spooned over a chilled bowl of vanilla ice-cream while still burning with a blue flame. This show-stopping flambéed dish is credited to the famous chef, Auguste Escoffie, who created it for the 1897 Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Queen Victoria. Cherries Jubilee became a big hit across the Atlantic and was a favourite in American restaurants of the 1950s and 60s. Today it has come back into fashion and Cherries Jubilee Day is the ideal time to discover this dramatic and delicious dish. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cherries-jubilee-day/

Save Your Photos Day Photographs, whether digital or physical, are an important part of our history and collection of memories. Whether they were passed down from our grandparents and parents or were created out of a personal passion for photography, these valuable artifacts represent days and moments in our lives and those of loved ones that can’t be reclaimed if lost. Every year thousands of photos are lost to natural disasters, fires, and other mishaps, Save Your Photos Day reminds you to safeguard these treasures. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/save-your-photos-day/

Punctuation Day Let’s face it, punctuation saves lives. It may sound a little strange to say that, but when you think of the effect that just the humble comma can have on the meaning of a sentence, it becomes readily apparent that there are some really strong arguments for learning to use them properly. For instance, you really don’t want to say “Let’s eat Grandma!” when you mean “Let’s eat, Grandma!” The first means you’re suggesting you eat your sweet old granny, the second invites her to come dine with you, see the difference? Punctuation Day shares this wisdom with the world, as well as the wisdom of all the other forms of punctuation. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/punctuation-day/

International Rabbit Day Poachers and cosmetic manufacturers beware: International Rabbit Day is definitely not for you! Held on the fourth Saturday or Sunday of September, this annual celebration of the long-eared, short-tailed mammal is not just in the name of the millions of bunnies kept as pets across the Western world, but aims to promote a serious message about animal welfare. On International Rabbit Day we are encouraged to consider, not only the companionship offered by our favourite hutch-dwellers, but the various ways in which rabbits are harmed by medical and cosmetic testing, hunting, fur farming and, of course, casseroling. Yes, there is a serious side to International Rabbit Day but you may not be surprised to learn that events are somewhat sporadic – so let your bunny out of its hutch and give it an extra carrot or two (and be sure to plan chicken for the family roast). https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-rabbit-day/

Supporters are raising funds to repair Florissant's historic Old St. Ferdinand Shrine

Supporters of the Old St. Ferdinand Shrine in Florissant are trying to raise $400,000 to repair the nearly 200-year-old complex, which includes some of the oldest Roman Catholic buildings in the Louisiana Purchase Territory.

Age and weather have taken a heavy toll on the shrine's church, convent, rectory and school building, according to Geri Debo, secretary/treasurer of the Friends of Old St. Ferdinand Shrine. The nonprofit formed in 1959 to care for the historic brick structures after the Archdiocese of St. Louis replaced them with new parish buildings.

New windows and tuck-pointing top the list of critical repairs needed to stop moisture that is damaging the walls of the buildings.

The group raises funds for daily operations through membership dues, tours and renting the facilities for special events, including weddings and funerals. But because the cost of repairs far exceeds the shrine’s budget, the group has started a gofundme campaign to spread the word.

Hug a Vegetarian Day Hug A Vegetarian Day was established to show recognition and appreciation for those that have made the, often difficult, transition to a meat free and animal-product free lifestyle. Being a vegetarian isn’t always easy, your food options tend to be limited at restaurants, and there’s a strange social hostility against those who choose to not consume animals. Since vegetarianism first started becoming a popular dietary move, there have been a lot of vegetarian options entering the market and today it’s relatively easy to find an alternative to anything left behind in the transition. So give these brave souls a hug to thank them for the animal lives they save, and the difficulties they sometimes face in their race to save our animal friends. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/hug-a-vegetarian-day/

Checkers Day or Dogs in Politics Day doesn’t have anything to do with the popular board game; rather, it commemorates the famous ‘checkers‘ speech made by Richard M. Nixon in 1952 after he received an adorable Cocker Spaniel as he sought election in 1952. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/checkers-day/

Restless Legs Awareness Day. Restless Legs Awareness Day aims to promote awareness of this medical condition or syndrome. It is held on the same day each year to coincide with the birth date of Professor Karl-Axel Ekborn (born 23rd September 1907, died 1977). This eminent Swedish neurologist first wrote and described the disease in 1945. Since then, a lot has been learned about its symptoms although (to date) there is no known primary cause. It may be associated with dopamine or blood iron levels. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/restless-legs-awareness-day/

National Ice Cream Cone Day Ice Cream Cone Day seeks to draw attention to the invention of the ice cream cone; an important, yet sadly often overlooked, invention that allows people to enjoy delicious ice cream combined with a handily portable and edible wafer cone, often whilst out and about. Just imagine what the world would look like without an ice cream cone. No ’99s, ice cream would have to be eaten with a bowl, and ice lollies would dominate! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/ice-cream-cone-day/

American Business Women's Day This special day celebrates the contribution that women make in the business world and focuses on ways to give women more equality. The first ever Business Women’s Day was celebrated in 1983 when a joint Congressional resolution was passed. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/business-womens-day/

Car Free Day Ever since the first vehicle rolled onto the streets in 1886, the world has had a love-hate relationship with the motor car. Today, with over one billion motor vehicles on the roads around the globe, it sometimes seems as if we cannot escape the pollution, noise and danger that they produce. One day a year is set aside to try and avoiding using cars and cycling, walking or using public transport instead. Car Free Day aims to take the heat off the planet for just one day by encouraging people to be less dependent on their cars and try alternatives. Informal car free days took place throughout the 1990s and the first official, global Car Free Day was launched in 2000. Many big cities, like Bogota and Jakarta, close their central roads on this day and fill them with walking and cycling events, and smaller car-free events take place around the world. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-car-free-day/

Florissant letter carrier to get hero award for stopping attacker wielding a cinder block

WASHINGTON • Florissant mail carrier Michael Murphy, who in 2014 rescued women in two cars from a man wielding a cinder block, will be among eight honored Wednesday for saving lives or helping people on their routes.

Murphy, of Troy, Ill., will be named the Central Region Hero of the Year by the National Association of Letter Carriers at a luncheon here.

The NALC said, “Murphy, a Marine Corps veteran and Navy reservist, tackled a cinder block-wielding man attacking women in two cars.”

According to the citation, Murphy was first alerted to a young girl screaming, "somebody help my mommy," when he walked out of a bread store after delivering mail on Oct. 29, 2014.
