Lumberjack Day Monty Python famously sang the Lumberjack Song and a rendition of this would be appropriate for Lumberjack Day. The history of this celebration dates back to the mid-2000s when Marianne Ways and Colleen AF Venable decided it was time to honor this venerable profession. Johnny Appleseed Day What many people don’t know is that Johnny Appleseed was no mere legend, but was in fact a missionary known by the name of John Chapman. Born in Leominster, Massachussets in 1774. While the most common display of the man who would be known as Johnny Appleseed is of him randomly spreading apple seeds everywhere, the truth of his methods were a bit more pragmatic. He travelled throughout Pennsylvania, Ontario, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, and the lands that would become West Virginia planting nurseries. Comic Book Day In 1837 there came a small, seemingly inconsequential shift in the way stories were told. One Obadiah Oldbuck was drawn into existence as a series of sequential pictures with text captions. It was originally created with the purpose of being a diversion for the creator and his friends, but all too unexpected it became incredibly popular in both the US and France. This is often considered the first comic, and Rodolphe Töpffer is often considered the father of the genre. World Pharmacists Day World Pharmacists Day was the brainchild of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), with the council of this organization voting to establish the event in the late 2000s during a conference they staged in Istanbul, Turkey. UFCW Local 655 members to vote on inferior Schnucks contract Monday

(St. Louis, MO)

Members will decide whether to accept the offer or reject it and authorize a strike

Members of United Food & Commercial Workers Local 655 employed at Schnucks Markets will meet Monday night to review and vote on a proposed contract covering more than 4,500 Local 655 members employed by Schnucks.

After a thorough review and discussion of the proposal, there will be a secret ballot vote to either accept the contract or reject it and authorize a strike. A two-thirds vote is required to authorize a strike. If a strike is authorized, there will be NO immediate strike or picket lines; the union is required to give five days notice of its intention to withhold services.

The Union’s leadership and its Rank and File Negotiating Committee are unanimously recommending REJECTION of the contract offer. The union’s current contract expired May 8, 2016. Union members continue to work on a day-by-day contract extension.

Cherries Jubilee Day is set aside to celebrate a dessert that takes cherries and turns them into something spectacular. Supporters are raising funds to repair Florissant's historic Old St. Ferdinand Shrine

Supporters of the Old St. Ferdinand Shrine in Florissant are trying to raise $400,000 to repair the nearly 200-year-old complex, which includes some of the oldest Roman Catholic buildings in the Louisiana Purchase Territory.

Age and weather have taken a heavy toll on the shrine's church, convent, rectory and school building, according to Geri Debo, secretary/treasurer of the Friends of Old St. Ferdinand Shrine. The nonprofit formed in 1959 to care for the historic brick structures after the Archdiocese of St. Louis replaced them with new parish buildings.

New windows and tuck-pointing top the list of critical repairs needed to stop moisture that is damaging the walls of the buildings.

The group raises funds for daily operations through membership dues, tours and renting the facilities for special events, including weddings and funerals. But because the cost of repairs far exceeds the shrine’s budget, the group has started a gofundme campaign to spread the word.

Since vegetarianism first started becoming a popular dietary move, there have been a lot of vegetarian options entering the market and today it’s relatively easy to find an alternative to anything left behind in the transition. Florissant letter carrier to get hero award for stopping attacker wielding a cinder block

WASHINGTON • Florissant mail carrier Michael Murphy, who in 2014 rescued women in two cars from a man wielding a cinder block, will be among eight honored Wednesday for saving lives or helping people on their routes.

Murphy, of Troy, Ill., will be named the Central Region Hero of the Year by the National Association of Letter Carriers at a luncheon here.

The NALC said, “Murphy, a Marine Corps veteran and Navy reservist, tackled a cinder block-wielding man attacking women in two cars.”

According to the citation, Murphy was first alerted to a young girl screaming, "somebody help my mommy," when he walked out of a bread store after delivering mail on Oct. 29, 2014.
