Daily Holidays October 31

National Caramel Apple Day The autumn air is crisp, the smell of fallen leaves wafts on breezes that bring showers of their fellows from the trees they caress. On every home we find the strands of fake spider-webs, ghouls and goblins in the bushes, and the bounties of the last harvest displayed as sheaves of corn and grinning Jack’o’Lanterns. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/caramel-apple-day/

Magic Day started with a “Houdini Day”, the first of which took place in the summer of 1927, less than one year after the famous magician’s death. His wife presented a trophy in honour of him on that day. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/magic-day/

Halloween It is widely believed that many Halloween traditions originated from Celtic harvest festivals which may have pagan roots, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain, and that this festival was Christianized as Halloween.[1][7][12][13][14][15] Some academics, however, support the view that Halloween began independently as a solely Christian holiday.[1][16][17][18][19] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halloween

National Candy Corn Day In the late 1800’s, George Renniger of the Wunderle Candy Company created this colorful confection to celebrate the beauty of corn, and the deep autumnal colors. During that time winter was a long and cold affair, with electricity not quite having come into common usage. The bright colors of these candies could last throughout, bringing both a visceral joy and a burst of much-needed sugar during the dark time of the year. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/candy-corn-day/

Checklist Day If you are living in the modern world, making use of a checklist is a powerful habit to embrace. So, Checklist Day is a great way to remind yourself how important these self-made reminders truly are. Interestingly enough, it is said that this day harkens back to some rather dark roots. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/checklist-day/

Create A Great Funeral Day The Day was founded with the hopes of getting loved ones to sit down together and talk about what they would want at their funeral so their loved ones know when the time comes and do not have to juggle their grief with trying to plan a funeral and guess what they would have wanted, even if it is just so much as a particular song played at the funeral, or words for the headstone. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/create-a-great-funeral-day/

Schnucks employees approve contract, avert strike

ST. CHARLES • Schnucks’ cashiers, baggers and other employees voted overwhelmingly to approve a three-year contract Wednesday night, ending a months-long battle over health insurance and wages that put St. Louis’ largest independent grocery chain on the brink of a strike.

Members of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 655 who are employed by Schnuck Markets Inc. voted 1,020-507 to approve the contract, or 67 percent of the total votes cast.

One month ago, 89 percent of employees assembled at the same auditorium at the Family Arena in St. Charles voted to reject an earlier version of the proposed contract, sending negotiators back to the bargaining table. The last contract expired May 8.

The union’s president, David Cook, called the changes to pensions, wages, insurance and work rules “substantially improved” but conceded the union didn’t get everything it wanted. “Is this everything I wish it was? Absolutely not,” he told those assembled before they cast their votes.

Hug a Sheep Day Hug A Sheep Day was started to celebrate all the fantastic sheep that exist all the world over, from those in the wild to those domesticated and living a life giving us the warmth and comfort of wool. The original Hug A Sheep Day was set on the birthday of Punkin, the first sheep the Crazy Sheep Lady of Equinox Farms ever called her own. Punkin was rescued from the Bluegrass Stockyards in 1992 to prevent something bad from happening to him. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/hug-a-sheep-day/

Cat Day Cat Day was first created by Colleen Paige, a strong animal welfare advocate, to bring attention to the plight of the domestic cat. Cat’s are closely tied to humans, whether as pets or as feral animals ranging throughout cities and towns. As pets they are dearly loved and have been the source of some of the most ridiculous memes on the internet, and have brought joy and laughter to millions of people around the world. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cat-day/

Internet Day Internet Day celebrates the origin of the very first internet transmission ever sent, and from it the utterly world-changing series of events that followed. People are able to video conference from around the world, and the information is stored and transmitted at unbelievable rates between computers and friends and family. Enhanced Reality is becoming a reality, with Digital Overlays available for real world things, seamlessly combining the world of the internet with the one we walk around in every day. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/internet-day/

International Bandana Day A specific original example of a Bandana Day is impossible to find, though it may have originated in Australia with a youth organization called CanTeen. Every year the organization hosts a Bandana day to raise awareness and also to raise support for, in their case, young people living with cancer. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-bandana-day/

Plush Animal Lovers Day is a day of celebration that is held every year to show your favourite stuffed toy some extra special love and appreciation. There’s an urban legend that says that the Teddy Bear, one of the worlds most popular plush animal pets, was invented when American President Theodore Roosevelt saw a baby bear on a hunting trip, and refused to shoot it. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/plush-animal-lovers-day/

Animation Day nimation is everywhere these days, and most of us have been raised on it. Starting with our Saturday Morning Cartoons that we enjoyed with our sugary bowl of cereal, straight through to our favorite video games and movies of today, our view of the world has often been shaped by this amazing art form. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/animation-day/

Cranky Co-Worker's Day The act of celebrating Cranky Co-Workers day is best done through inaction. Don’t try to cheer up your cranky co-workers, don’t deride them for their behaviors and their thought-patterns. Instead, allow them the space to be cranky, leave the alone if that’s what they profess to prefer, or be the target for their cranky ways. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cranky-co-workers-day/

Navy Day s the original day to celebrate the U.S. Navy, and though this celebration officially was replaced by Armed Forces Day (Third Saturday in May for the U.S.) in 1949, the celebrations of Navy Day continue on, especially within the Navy itself. Additionally, research undertaken in the 1970s showed the ‘true’ birthday of the US Navy to be October 13th, and the date was officially changed – however, the entrenched celebration still holds sway, and October 27th is still generally celebrated instead. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/navy-day/

Black Cat Day Nothing is quite as elegant as a black cat—like a miniature Amazonian jaguar, they doze atop the highest point in the area, waking for several hours daily to prowl around hunting for a tasty morsel. But black cats and kittens are often overlooked when animal shelters are looking for new homes, and can be at the shelter much longer than they should be. So why is this? https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/black-cat-day/

National Mincemeat Pie Day Mincemeat can be a confusing term for those who are unfamiliar with it, and sometimes even confusing for those who are. Mincemeat is a mixture of diced fruit, meat, and distilled spirits that are often used as a pie filling, but even this term isn’t always accurate. These days it isn’t unusual to find mincemeat that doesn’t contain meat, or contains beef suet rather than vegetable shortening. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/mincemeat-day/

Howl at The Moon Night You can keep things literal in your Howl at the Moon Day celebrations, and merely take a step outside and give the celestial orb in the sky a great big howling hello. You can get groups of friends together and head out to the forests and build a bonfire under a dark autumn night, and how to the crisp and clear skies overhead and the moon that hangs there like a giant eye watching over the world at large. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/howl-at-the-moon-day/

Pumpkin Day here’s one thing that represents October more than anything else, and it’s not Halloween (though it’s involved). That thing? The pumpkin. It starts appearing on shelves and farmers market’s stands on the last week or two of September, and is the herald that lets you know that Pumpkin Pies, Jack-o-Lanterns, and all the joys of fall are just around the corner. Pumpkin Day celebrates these noble squash’s, and the history and tradition tied up in their iconic ornateness. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/pumpkin-day/

Punk for A Day - Day Punk For a Day Day was established to celebrate the long and storied history of Punk Rock. This amazing and powerful counter-culture movement completely revolutionized rock music and the face of the musical world at large. All of this on the heels of the revolutionary hippie movement, the punk rock movement took the hope and light of their predecessors and rolled it together with a rage-filled cynicism the likes of which would make Nietzche proud. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/punk-for-a-day-day/

International Artists Day Art has been an important part of the human experience for time out of mind, the first records of the world are not written in books, but are captured in paintings, sculptures, and music that helps to paint a picture of world lost to the past. Whether it’s revealing a style of dress worn in a period by the clothing worn in the painting, or the slight heresy’s hidden in some of the worlds most religious works, art can reveal a hidden or lost side of us to the present. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-artists-day/

Sourest Day Are you a fan of the pucker? The Sultan of sour? Do you love that tight feeling you get at the back of your mouth when you chomp down on a lemon, or find Warhead candies to be the absolute best thing in the world? Maybe you go for a subtler sour, like that found in lemon flavored cookies and cakes, or the delightful bite of rhubarb. Maybe you just have a particularly sour attitude or know someone who does? If any of these are true for you, Sourest Day is going to be your new favorite holiday… Or not. Sourpuss. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/sourest-day/

World Pasta Day Warm steaming spaghetti in a rich red sauce, littered with seasoned sausage, black olives, and mushrooms, or a rich Chicken Fettuccine in a creamy garlic white sauce that just absolutely blows your mind. There are over 600 shapes of pasta known to mankind, and their names are descriptive of their shapes. Spaghetti (‘cord’), vermicelli (‘little worms’), rotini (‘spirals’), fusili (‘spindles’), tortellini (‘little cakes’), linguini (‘little tongues’), conchiglie (‘shells’), fettucine (‘small ribbons’), penne (‘quills’) and capellini (‘fine hairs’) are the savoury little goodies that are essential to any pantry. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-pasta-day/

United Nations Day Celebrating United Nations Day can be done by getting to know about this great organization and the differences it makes in your life. Some of the basic rights and privileges enjoyed by people around the world are a result of the work done by the United Nations. Recently, access to the Internet was declared a basic human right, a declaration which ensures that everyone has access to the world wide information and communication network. While this doesn’t guarantee that everyone will have the ability to access the internet, it does guarantee that everyone has the right to. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/united-nations-day/
