A Day in the Life of Joe Republican

Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards.

With his first swallow of water, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to ensure their safety and that they work as advertised.

All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance - now Joe gets it too.

He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

This has been around more than once in some variation or another, but still is a good read...

Argyle Day Argyle – you probably think of argyle socks and sweaters when you hear the name, but there’s no reason to limit its usage to only those sorts of things when there’s a diversity of argyle designs. An argyle pattern is made of diamonds or lozenges, with overlapping motifs that typically contain an overlay of intercrossing diagonal lines on solid diamonds. You’ve seen it on the tartan hose that Scotsmen wear with kilts, on old golf costumes, and on numerous pairs of socks. We must say that the pattern has lent itself to a wider variety of uses in recent years, everything from leggings to kinesiology tape. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/argyle-day/

Bubble Bath Day That first bath, bubbles rising up around us in a scent that would soon become associated with warmth, comfort, and safety. It started with the love of a mother’s hands, and in time we began to pamper ourselves. Rich bubbles, beautiful candles, quiet music, and a little time to ourselves have all been the hallmark of the bubble bath. Bubblebath Day reminds us of these little luxuries, and to take time out of our day to treat ourselves to a little special TLC. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/bubble-bath-day/

Earth’s Rotation Day The earth rotates on its axis and one full rotation takes 24 hours to complete. We’d be very surprised if you didn’t already know that, but what you may not know is that the speed of the earth’s rotation can change from day to day and year to year. So a true solar day is not exactly 24 hours, but the variations are a matter of seconds. A mean solar day is based on the yearlong average, but the basic concept of a solar day itself is the length of time for the earth to complete one full rotation on its axis. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/earths-rotation-day/

National Joy Germ Day Back in 1981, Joan White of Syracuse, New York thought of the idea of holding joy germ Day, and the idea has developed a following that stretches across the US as well as around the world. Ms. White is a retired advertising and public relations specialist and it’s little surprise that she’s displayed her creativity and positive thinking to promote the idea of joy germs. The original joy germ Day also fell on White’s mother’s birthday, as it was her energy that inspired White to have the day to honor her. White isn’t entirely sure how she came up with the idea of joy germs. One mention of it came from a piece she wrote one time for a local inn, but the inn owner had asked her to remove mention of the phrase at that time. So she kept it for herself and ultimately came up with joy germ Day. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/joy-germ-day/

I’m Not Going To Take It Anymore Day I’m Not Going To Take It Anymore Day is when we as human beings fight back against the injustices inflicted upon us, to show that we cannot be controlled nor contained like wild animals. To show that we have our own lives and our own prerogatives. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/im-not-going-to-take-it-anymore-day/

Fruit Cake Toss Day Let’s be honest: nobody really likes fruitcake, and nobody ever really eats it, either. Heavy, flavorless and always too sweet, fruitcake is one of our century’s biggest holiday jokes. So when Christmas is over, and you’ve taken the tinsel down, and thrown out the tree, what should you do with that old fruitcake that you’ve been using to prop open the door/to replace a missing limb/as a headrest? Fruitcake Toss Day has a “fruitful” answer (see what we did there?). The event, which is reported as having originated in Manitou Springs, Colorado, was created in order to help people get rid of unwanted fruitcake after Christmas. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/fruitcake-toss-day/

Old Rock Day despite some misconception, is not a day of celebrating classic Rock ‘n’ Roll tunes of days gone by but is, in fact, the day that Geologists and amateur rock enthusiasts take it upon themselves to show their appreciation of all things fossilised and stony. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/old-rock-day/

Bobble Head Day Take me out to the ball game! Take me out the fun! Buy me some peanuts and … bobbleheads? That’s right! Bobblehead day is when we celebrate the fantastic development that are bobblehead dolls! Whether you’re buying them for your favorite baseball team, or one of those commemorative presidential bobbleheads, Bobblehead Day is your opportunity to get out there and learn a bit about these iconic toys history! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/bobblehead-day/

Giant Eagle planning to close five supermarkets

http://www.post-gazette.com/business/career-workplace/2017/01/04/Giant-Eagle-planning-to-close-five-supermarkets/stories/201701040236

Giant Eagle plans to close five supermarkets and four GetGo locations in Ohio, Maryland and in Altoona, the O’Hara-based grocer said.

Three supermarkets and one GetGo are located in central Ohio; two supermarkets and one GetGo are located in northeastern Ohio. All of these locations will close between Feb. 4 and March 4, the company said.

GetGo locations at 100 West Plank Road in Altoona and 1700 West Seventh Street in Frederick, Md., are expected to close at the end of business on Jan. 17.

Meanwhile, the company is preparing for the spring opening of its Millcreek Mall supermarket in Erie, according to spokesman Dick Roberts.

Add these store closings to the list of Macy's and Sears/K-Marts. Makes things look somewhat bleak...

Aldi (UK) becomes first supermarket chain to pay all staff MORE than the real living wage

Aldi is to become the first supermarket to pay staff above the voluntary living wage.

The discount chain is increasing its minimum pay rate for more than 3,350 workers to £8.53 an hour - and £9.75 in London - from February 1.

It means most staff will get 8p an hour more than the Living Wage Foundation’s £8.45 an hour, and piles pressure on rivals.

The new rate is 91p an hour more than Tesco pays, and 87p an hour more than Sainsbury’s.

Bean Day Beans are a common food around the globe and for good reason: they’re rich in fiber, protein, and can be delicious. You might think of beans only as an ingredient in chili con carne or baked beans, but they’re not limited to these applications – in Japan, for instance, red beans are commonly used in desserts. There are also various Chinese sweets that also incorporate either red beans or mung beans. That, of course, excludes things like soya beans which are used both fresh (as edamame) as well as in various sauces and condiments ranging from soya sauce to miso and various fermented condiments found throughout southeast Asia and northeast India. Tempeh and tofu are also made from soya bean and that just goes to show how versatile and essential beans are to various cuisines worldwide. So whether you’re indulging in a nice steamy bowl of chili or a Japanese sweet, there are numerous ways to celebrate humble beans. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/bean-day/

Cuddle Up Day Winter has the coldest days of the year so there’s many ways to stay warm. One of the best ways to stay warm is a three-dog night, a night so cold it takes cuddling up to three dogs to stay warm. There are multiple benefits to cuddling with people, canines, and other pets. Let’s find out what those are in the history of Cuddle Up Day! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cuddle-up-day/

Epiphany or Twelfth Night or Three Kings' Day,[2] is a Christian feast day that celebrates the revelation of God in his Son as human in Jesus Christ. In Western Christianity, the feast commemorates principally (but not solely) the visit of the Magi to the Christ child, and thus Jesus' physical manifestation to the Gentiles.[3][4] Moreover, the feast of the Epiphany, in some Western Christian denominations, also initiates the liturgical season of Epiphanytide.[5][6] Eastern Christians, on the other hand, commemorate the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, seen as his manifestation to the world as the Son of God.[7]

The traditional date for the feast is January 6. However, since 1970, the celebration is held in some countries on the Sunday after January 1. Eastern Churches following the Julian calendar observe the feast on what for most countries is January 19[8] because of the 13-day difference today between that calendar and the generally used Gregorian calendar.[9] In many Western Christian Churches, the eve of the feast is celebrated as Twelfth Night.[10][11] The Monday after Epiphany is known as Plough Monday.[12] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epiphany_(holiday)

Apple Tree Day could also be called ‘Put a Doctor Out of Business Day’ because of the fruit’s health benefits. However, the origin of this day is quite different. Apple Tree Day started as a celebration of an old apple tree almost two centuries old, and has grown to become a celebration of the apple itself. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/apple-tree-day/

National Shortbread Day. There are very few foods that suggest Scotland quite so strongly as shortbread. The only other close contender would be haggis and those tend to evoke rather mixed sentiments when mentioned to anyone outside of Scotland. Yeah, there are Scotch eggs too, but we’d like to remind you that while they are decidedly British in invention, it’s harder to pin them particularly on Scotland. Scotch whiskey is a beverage after all, so it doesn’t really count. While no Robert Burns Night observance would be complete without some shortbread, we feel that having a day dedicated to making and eating shortbread can’t really be a bad thing. After all, who doesn’t like shortbread? So now you have two days where you can enjoy shortbread, even though we knew that shortbread is good year round and no one really needs an excuse to make and enjoy shortbread. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/shortbread-day/

National Whipped Cream Day Nothing completes an ice cream sundae, hot chocolate or a piece of pumpkin pie quite like a luxurious dollop of real whipped cream. What a delight to celebrate all that is great about whipped cream with Whipped Cream Day! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/whipped-cream-day/

Bird Day There are a lot of different species of birds in the world. Different people have different relationships with the various species. As such, one could easily imagine that there are actually numerous Bird Days in the world, serving different purposes varying by region. What we’re talking about is known as Bird Day, observed primarily in the United States, which is different from occasions such as International Migratory Bird Day, World Migratory Bird Day, Bird Day (UK), and several other Bird Days which do not follow the same etymology as “turkey day”. We’ll also note that all of these are all named for our avian friends, not the late Senator Robert Byrd. The National is a bit deceptive here; For a day to technically be a National holiday, an Act of Congress is required, and there’s no evidence that has ever happened. That being said, it is popularly known as Bird Day, regardless of whatever Congress might think of that. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/bird-day/

National Spaghetti Day One of the world’s favorite dishes, spaghetti is more than deserving of its own little holiday. And because it is both simple and delicious, spaghetti is the perfect dish to make to bring out your inner chef, even if you don’t have all that much cooking experience! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/spaghetti-day/

Pop Music Chart Day If you ever listen to pop music the radio, you’re probably at least familiar with the concept of weekly pop music charts. They often play as a countdown of either the top five or top ten songs on the chart that week and either samples or the entire songs are played. Pop music is hard to ignore and even if you absolutely hate it, there’s a pretty sure chance that you have heard at least some of the songs on the charts. Pop music is everywhere and it’s a mixed bag of awful racket and some genuinely interesting songs that all somehow reach the zenith of popularity. While some songs may only be on the chart for one week, there are others which remain among the most popular songs for months on end. This, after all, is how we judge the most influential bands and musicians – if a song remains on the charts for a long period of time, there’s a good chance that your grandchildren will know it too. It’s no trivial matter that names like The Beatles and Elvis Presley both found their way at the top of the charts for several sustained periods. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/pop-music-chart-day/

Trivia Day All those facts you picked up through daytime game shows can finally be put to good use when you astound your friends with your general knowledge! Trivia day is the perfect day to share all of those silly little facts that almost nobody knows, making this day a fun and interesting one to spend with friends or family. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/trivia-day/

World Braille Day World Braille Day celebrates the birth of Louis Braille, inventor of the reading and writing system used by millions of blind and partially sighted people all over the globe. Though not a public holiday in any country, World Braille Day provides an opportunity for teachers, charities and non-government organizations to raise awareness about issues facing the blind and the importance of continuing to produce works in Braille, providing the blind with access to the same reading and learning opportunities as the sighted. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-braille-day/

Menards violates labor law, NLRB says

http://www.jsonline.com/story/money/business/2016/12/23/menards-violates-labor-law-nlrb-says/95806352/

A federal agency has accused Menard Inc. of violating labor law in a case involving delivery drivers, a union official who initially sought the investigation into the retailer’s practices said.

According to Seth Goldstein, senior business representative with the Office & Professional Employees International Union, the National Labor Relations Board has issued a complaint alleging that Menards has improperly classified its drivers as independent contractors rather than employees.

The agency also accuses the Eau Claire-based firm of violating federal labor law by prohibiting drivers from filing class action lawsuits or NLRB charges against Menards, according to a copy of the complaint provided by Goldstein.

Chocolate Covered Cherry Day Just in case you haven’t indulged enough over the festive and new year periods, Chocolate Covered Cherry Day is an excuse to break open another box of cherry liqueurs and dig right in! The idea behind chocolate-covered cherries is incredible simple: chocolate is delicious. So are cherries. So one day someone said, “Why not combine the two and make something even better?” and the chocolate-covered cherry was born! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/chocolate-covered-cherry-day/

Drinking Straw Day Can you imagine drinking a milkshake without a straw? Or how anyone would manage a juice box? How many soft drinks would you have spilled on yourself in dark movie theaters if it weren’t for straws? I think we can all agree drinking straws have changed our lives for the better enough to deserve their own holiday, and that’s exactly what Drinking Straw day is about: celebrating the invention and patenting of the (paraffin-covered) paper drinking straw! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/drinking-straw-day/

Festival of Sleep Day We all love sleep, right? Climbing into bed, snuggling up under the covers and slowly slipping into the land of dreams, dreaming of our favorite things or even dreaming about a loved one? Perhaps even a childhood memory that we are fond to reminisce upon. But surprise! We have a holiday for this particular bodily function, and it is called the Festival of Sleep Day! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/festival-of-sleep-day/
