History from Herbert Hoover era

My Partner is going through his mothers letters, and this is part of one from June 25th, 1930, from my Partners Grandfather, a member of the House of Representatives. It opens with a thank you for her last letter and for the package she and her sister had sent remembering his birthday anniversary. He mentions having a hard time recovering strength after two weeks or more in bed, but aside from that he is feeling fine and will soon be himself again. "The end of the session is just around the corner and we are liable to have the day set most any time now. I will be glad to get home again."
(snip)
"Today will be very strenuous as the Veterans Bill will come before the House on the final passage. The President will promptly veto it and then the Republicans, who held a secret caucus last night, will vote enough to sustain his veto, even tho they vote for the bill in its original form. That is their secret agreement. After that they will introduce another Bill and pass it. It is a terrible tangle and the Republicans are in a hole. I am very happy over the result of my work, provided the President does not veto the Rivers and Harbors Bill==but I am very nervous over that and will not know for a day or two, yet. We have been doing a lot of 'light' housekeeping, if there is such a thing."
(snip) He continues with family affairs, then has this to say about what's happening locally.
"The workmen have brought their shanty over to old Congress Hall to go to work on the hole in the ground, and the Hotel Potomac has sold all its contents and will turn the building over to the U.S as of July 1st., when it will be immediately torn down. You would hardly know the place. The little corner store where we could buy sandwiches and coffee will be particularly missed, but I understand it will open up in a nearby location again; probably just back of Bryan's corner where the Greek once had a little restaurant."
"... All the congressional ladies have packed up all they can pack, excepting things absolutely necessary, and are all ready to go. I wish we could get away this week, but no one can tell as yet. The bell is ringing for me to come to the House and a telephone message from the Democratic Whip, Mr. McDuffie, tells all Democrats to "be on the Floor when we convene, and to "Stay There". That seems to be the program for the day and I guess I had better conform to orders. I could write a lot more but for this call."

"Your Loving,
Father"

When my partner read this, I thought some others might enjoy a look into the past.

I missed Cindy Sheehan in Monte Rio yesterday, but heard she was a good speaker at the Occupy Bohemian Grove Rally.

Have a good one,

Looks like lots of folks can't get to a link, but I seem to get different numbers.

Has the place been taken over by robots? Are the servers being updated or something. Will we ever know??

Does something happen with DU around 1:30AM Pacific time?

I am often up late reading pages and suddenly I can't access any DU pages. I just get the "sometimes the site is busy, try again later" script. I haven't kept a log, just give up and go on to bed, but thought I would ask.

Russia stunned after Japanese plan to evacuate 40 Million revealed

http://www.readersupportednews.org/news-section2/344-208/11006-russia-stunned-after-japanese-plan-to-evacuate-40-million-revealed
new report circulating in the Kremlin today prepared by the Foreign Ministry on the planned re-opening of talks with Japan over the disputed Kuril Islands during the next fortnight states that Russian diplomats were “stunned” after being told by their Japanese counterparts that upwards of 40 million of their peoples were in “extreme danger” of life threatening radiation poisoning and could very well likely be faced with forced evacuations away from their countries eastern most located cities… including the world’s largest one, Tokyo.

The Kuril Islands are located in Russia's Sakhalin Oblast region and stretch approximately 1,300 km (810 miles) northeast from Hokkaido-, Japan, to Kamchatka, Russia, separating the Sea of Okhotsk from the North Pacific Ocean. There are 56 islands and many more minor rocks. It consists of Greater Kuril Ridge and Lesser Kuril Ridge, all of which were captured by Soviet Forces in the closing days of World War II from the Japanese.

The “extreme danger” facing tens of millions of the Japanese peoples is the result of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster that was a series of equipment failures, nuclear meltdowns, and releases of radioactive materials at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, following the To-hoku earthquake and tsunami on 11 March 2011.

According to this report, Japanese diplomats have signaled to their Russian counterparts that the returning of the Kuril Islands to Japan is “critical” as they have no other place to resettle so many people that would, in essence, become the largest migration of human beings since the 1930’s when Soviet leader Stalin forced tens of millions to resettle Russia’s far eastern regions.

California Sixth Graders Find Bags of 'Treasure' in Oakland Lake
A group of sixth graders in Oakland, Calif., doing their weekly cleanup along the the shore of a local lake, stumbled across something that was not the usual tree limbs or old junk -- it looked like treasure.

"I was picking up some trash and I saw a bunch of people in my group gathering, so I quickly ran over there," said Simone, a sixth grader with the group.

"There were two bags almost full of pretty jewelry that had gold and silver."

The students, from St. Paul's Episcopal School in Oakland, had found two 15-pound canvas bags full of jewelry and other valuable objects including rings, pocket watches, two silver candlesticks, a silver spoon and a switchblade.

(snip...)

There is a video there too, of the kids checking it all out.
