About that broad brush thing . . .

The comments posted to our newspaper can be, shall we say, entertaining. Some are actually informative, some are aggravating. When the paper reinstituted the comment function, after having removed it because too many comments were abusive, the new arrangement required a Facebook log-in. There aren’t nearly as many comments posted these days, but most of them are at least somewhat informed with some effort toward spelling and grammar. Most of them.

The exception to that rule (and you knew there had to be one) is the most reliable commenter. There are few matters on which he does not have a strong opinion. I won’t give his name, but refer to him as “Mr. Broadbrush.” Suffice it to say, he’s no fan of anyone who is not his type of conservative. His verbal ammunition belt is routinely loaded with every disparaging name for liberals, progressives, and Democrat(s), and the things we are accused of run the gamut from imaginative to slanderous. No one bothers to respond to him any more, and getting one of his scathing rebukes has become something of a badge of success.

Having no one respond to him probably rankles him more than anything else; even his fellow conservatives don’t bother to post responses in support or agreement. Mr. Broadbrush seems to have fallen into irrelevancy, an unfortunate but not uncommon hazard of broadbrushery. He hasn’t yet learned that wielding a broadbrush can be hazardous to one’s effectiveness.

Oh, well.

Weld jury convicts former GOP chairman accused of voter fraud, forgery

Weld jury convicts former GOP chairman accused of voter fraud, forgery

A Weld jury turned in two convictions the case of a former Colorado Republican Party chairman accused of voter fraud by filling out his ex-wife's ballot and mailing it in.

Jury members deliberated for about four hours after attorneys on both sides in the case of Steve Curtis, 57, delivered their closing arguments this morning in a collective two hours of formal address to the jury. Curtis, who served as chairman of the Colorado Republican Party from 1997-99 is was found guilty voter fraud and forgery after prosecutors say he in October 2016 he filled out a ballot delivered to his Firestone house addressed to his ex-wife, and forged her signature. She and Curtis had been separated for months by that point though, and she was living in South Carolina at the time. He faces up to three years in prison, although Weld District Court Judge Julie Hoskins said probation is more likely.

Colorado State Rep. Lori Saine arrested with gun at Denver International Airport

Colorado State Rep. Lori Saine arrested with gun at Denver International Airport

DENVER – Colorado State Rep. Lori Saine, R-Dacono, was arrested Tuesday at Denver International Airport for carrying a weapon in a public transportation facility. Court records and the Denver Police Department confirm Saine's arrest, and DPD said the case will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office to determine if she will face charges.

The pre-filed charge is a sixth-degree felony, introduction of a firearm into a transportation facility.
Requests for comment made to Saine and House Republican leadership were not immediately returned.
Saine was the primary sponsor of a bill in the 2017 legislative session that would have repealed the prohibition of high-capacity magazines for certain guns, and which would have eliminated a ban on so-called “gravity knives.”

The bill died after it was introduced in committee. Saine sits on the House Agriculture, Livestock and Natural Resources; Legislative Council; and Legislative Audit committees.

Meanwhile, in Greeley, we are awaiting tonight's city council meeting that will deal with, among other things, whether the candidate who lied about a felony conviction will be seated anyway.
