madamesilverspurs's JournalState Rep. Tim Leonard hit with a 14-day jail sentence on contempt charge
A Jefferson County magistrate sentenced state Rep. Tim Leonard of Evergreen to 14 days in jail on contempt of court charges related to his 2013 divorce. A sheriffs deputy handcuffed Leonard and led him from the courtroom Friday afternoon just after 2 p.m.
His attorney, Sharon Liko, pleaded for a weekend stay so that Leonard could talk to his children and get his affairs in order. But Magistrate Marianne Marshall Tims said Leonard had had nine weeks to prepare. She initially found the Republican state legislator in contempt of court on Sept. 29, and said at the time that if the sheriff had been available, he would have been taken into custody that day.
Leonard declined an opportunity to talk directly to the court. His attorney argued that he had a legislative session for which to prepare. The magistrate responded: I could not care less if the legislature starts. He is in this position because he chose to be in this position.

Watch now: Sen. Boxer on C-span2
Sen. Barbara Boxer is taking it to Republicans over Kevin McCarthy's sneak provision in water legislation. She's being pretty damned awesome.
Joined by Cantwell, Murray coming up.
Apparently, republican senators are whining about her floor time.

He just doesn't like us. At all.
Donald Trump is proving it, moment by moment. Just look at those he has already appointed. Not one of them is going to work for our benefit ("our" meaning all of the citizens of this country). Instead of putting together a team that will promote the common good, he seems to be assembling a squad designed to exert revenge. Yeah, we keep hearing to give him time, yada yada, he might yet appoint someone who isn't out to gut us. But I'm not holding my breath. Donald Trump really does not like us.

Donald Trump and the Bill of Wrongs
Its not just that hes a vulgar, swaggering jerk. Its not just that he has a hideous record of mistreatment of women. Its not just that he stiffs those who work for him. Its not just that his social interactions are based on the behaviors of a 13-year-old boy. Its not just his ease with lying. Its not just his reckless belligerence. Its not just his inciting of violence toward anyone who dares to question him or disagree with him. Its not just his slimy belittling of people with disabilities. Its not just his elevation of those who share his distaste for people of color. Its not just his preference for revenge against anyone who exposes his errors. Its not just his greed that informs his every decision and allows him to maintain undisclosed business relationships with those who are stated enemies of this country. Its not just his sneering contempt for those who pay taxes while he apparently doesnt. Its not just his failure to appreciate any of the many blessings in his life. Its not just his inability to comprehend the depth and breadth and weight of the office. Its not just his refusal to appoint people who are actually appropriate to the task.
Its all that, and so much more, combined with his glaring and smug ignorance of the Constitution, that causes us to cringe at the prospect of his impending administration. The presidential oath of office contains a promise to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. But by his routinely demonstrated blithe indifference to that document he himself has taught us that, no matter how high the stack of Bibles on which he takes the oath, Donald Trump is already proving to be the most dire domestic threat to this nation in our lifetime.

I was wrong.
When news came that those of us who rely on Social Security would be getting an increase, I grabbed my calculator and pushed a few buttons, using the percentage quoted in those reports. Running the numbers twice, my monthly check would increase by a spectacular $2.18, which I rounded down to $2. Today I learned that I was wrong. Not in my calculation, but in my rounding. My monthly check will increase by $3. Yippeekiyay.
To be sure, any inclination to celebrate this breezefall is tempered by the understanding that, come January, Paul Ryan will insist that this new level of luxury is unwarranted. He's already decided that old ladies like me are a threat to his way of life, and he will apply his considerable energy toward removing us from this lap of luxury. He's already determined that we have too much to eat. At the moment I'm trying to figure out where to hide my walker; he might just decide that it doesn't need all four wheels, that I can make do with three.
Maybe I shouldn't be so harsh toward Ryan. After all, he did take an oath to defend the Constitution, and we do comprise a considerable threat, doncha know, seeing as how there are millions of us. But I can't help wishing that, instead of keeping America safe from old people, he could see the very real threat that's about to seat itself in the Oval Office. If he'd do that, I'd gladly give that $3 back.
