Hickenlooper Declares War: State Will Sue Cities Over “Fracking”

After more than two years of dismaying conservationists with his relentless promotion (and frequent prevarications) in support of the controversial practice of hydraulic fracture drilling for oil and natural gas, all the while proclaiming the practice's safety, Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper has cut to the bottom line.

And announced that the state will sue any city or town that attempts to ban "fracking" within its borders. CBS4:

Gov. John Hickenlooper says he won’t tolerate cities and towns that ban oil and gas drilling within their borders and he promises to take them to court.

CBS4 Political Specialist Shaun Boyd sat down with the governor, who was blunt. He told Boyd the state will sue any local government that bans hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, the drilling technique that uses high-pressure water and chemicals to extract natural gas.

“Nothing makes me less happy then to have to be in a lawsuit with a municipality,” Hickenlooper said…

“The bottom line is, the way we have a split estate in this part of the world – pretty much all of the western United States — someone paid money to buy mineral rights under that land,” Hickenlooper said. “You can’t harvest the mineral rights without doing hydraulic fracturing, which I think we’ve demonstrated again and again can be done safely.”

The Great Fort Collins Pro-Fracking Petition #Fail

An absolutely hilarious story from the Fort Collins Coloradoan today has a familiar twist:

The Colorado Oil and Gas Association says it wants to withdraw an error-filled petition it submitted to the Fort Collins City Council opposing a ban on fracking within the city…

Many of the petition signers were unaware they were representing their business; they later asked to be removed from the coalition. In other cases, COGA was unable to identify some of the signers and verify that some of the businesses it listed as part of the coalition had signed the petition.

“COGA has ascertained we made mistakes in the collection of signatures on a petition submitted to City Council last week opposing a ban on hydraulic fracturing,” COGA President and CEO wrote in an email to the council on Monday. “As a result, we withdraw that petition from the record.”

Softec Responds to Violent, Racist Threats to Rep. Rhonda Fields

Softec Solutions, Inc. just put out this statement regarding the violent and racist threats their Chief Operating Officer allegedly made against Representative Rhonda Fields:

SofTec Solutions, Inc. has been informed of allegations against our employee, Mr. Frank Sain. We are shocked to learn of these allegations and are taking this matter very seriously. If true, these actions are highly inappropriate and will not be tolerated. Pending SofTec’s investigation into this matter, Mr. Sain has been suspended immediately from further duties at SofTec. SofTec Solutions is a minority-owned, small business and we employ a large diverse workforce. We will absolutely not tolerate any racial, sexual, gender-based slurs or threats of violence by employees.

Franklin Sain, who reportedly said regarding Representative Fields, ""Hopefully somebody Giffords both of your asses", was arrested Friday for "suspicion of harassment and an attempt to influence a public servant" after threatening emails that were sent to Representative Fields were tracked back to his computer. He was later released on a $30,000 bond, according to Westword. Sain was appointed as Chief Operating Officer at Softec in 2011, according to this press release.

Sain's involvement was detailed in a story by Westword this morning. According to the arrest affidavit, numerous emails were sent using the words, "c*nt" and "n*gger" and one said, "I'm coming for you N*gger B*tch".

Sain is due in court March 8, 2013.

Cops: Man arrested for threatening Colorado Representative Rhonda Fields

Denver Police arrested Franklin "Frank" Sain, 42, for threatening Colorado Representative Rhonda Fields, an Aurora Democrat.

According to police, he left emails and voice mails for Fields' office which were threatening in nature. Fields has sponsored two pieces of gun-control legislation and is a vocal advocate for restrictions on firearms.

John Morse, President of the Colorado Senate, says the threats were directed to Fields' daughter. He noted this was particularly concerning and "way beyond disrespectful." Fields' son was shot and killed in 2005.

A Necessary Ouch

He's tall, just like my brothers. He's a veteran, like my brothers. So it's been easy to be comfortable around him, his presence has almost seemed familiar. He's been part of my activist life for the last couple of years and participates in my precinct caucus. He's well-informed on many issues and engages well with the public at events like our anti-fracking protests. And then there's the gun issue.

If there has ever been an instance that invites a Jekyll-Hyde comparison, he has brought it. Over the last couple of weeks, especially and increasingly with our state legislature's actions on gun measures, he's gone apocalyptic. He's convinced that Obama is going to come and take all of his guns, and he will not hear any argument against that conviction. He's begun referring to the President as "this piece of shit" and now tells people that Barack Obama is a dictator. My refusal to arm myself with an AR-15 is, in his view, an admission that I'm choosing to be a victim (?) and willing to become Soylent Green.

A friend called me yesterday afternoon, concerned about this guy's comments posted to one of my facebook conversations. She asked if I understood what he was talking about when, in response to a perceived threat from Obama to take gun rights away from veterans, he said he might have to "fulfill his oath"; he followed that with a rant about being part of the "warrior class" that would push back. Another friend called with the same concerns and suggested that I might want to distance myself from this guy.

He's been 'unfriended' from my facebook page, and a couple of our mutual acquaintances have indicated support for that decision. I don't anticipate going to any events where he will be present. For all of his wild ranting, it still hurts to say goodbye.
