A Sad Distance

One of my casual friends, known her for many years, recently shared that facebook thing about hammers and baseball bats killing more people than guns. I responded with something about having fewer massacres if that were true, then shared the appropriate Snopes link that gives real numbers. I was truly amazed by her reply:

It may be dramatic but the real truth is that people kill people, it doesn't matter what weapon is used, could be a fryin pan, knive, screwdriver, gun, u name it and moreso people ate busy killing each other just with tneir words. When does it stop? When we all stop feeling the need tobe right or justified or blaming everybody else for their problems. The United States was in a super sized funk before Obama but your dear president hasnt helped matters much more. It does take more than one person but he has sure promoted getting God out of all our pictures and having us lean on him aka the government. It is a JOKE!!!! Really lets focus on something that really matters. How many babies die, how come we have so many ho eless, how come I pay such high taxes and still feel like lower income and the people areou d me struggle even more than we. Why cant. I be entitled to my opinion or thoughts without being critiqued but heaven forbid I talk about God or religion. People kill people ever since the beginning of time. I've had enough. If everybody that plastered bad crap on here would focus on something positive just one day it might make a huge difference in many lives.

This is someone who's walked with me in the Relay For Life, as I've walked with her as her husband has struggled with cancer. They've come to my Christmas parties, we've gone fishing together. They always struck me as rather apolitical, so our conversations never went in that direction. The conversation has always been pleasant. Until now.

Damn. I hate this.

There is no forgetting.

Half a decade ago my alleged representative in Congress was among those who defeated a measure that would have extended health benefits to guard members and their families. It wasn't the first time she had voted against healthcare for our military while touting her yellow ribbon 'support the troops.' Later that same day she accompanied Bush on a visit to Walter Reed Hospital.

Not long after that day we had a rally in the park directly across the street from her office. Congress was on break, she was in town, she knew we would be there because we had invited her to join us. We thought it might be a good thing for her to meet our speakers, some Iraq war veterans. She found something 'official' that suddenly required her attention in a city that wasn't even in her district, not that we were at all surprised by her absence.

One of the young veterans spoke of helping to zip closed the bags that held the remains of six of the guys he'd gone through training with. He apologized for crying. He said he hadn't yet been able to get help for the PTSD, that he was only able to sleep an hour or two each night. He asked for our help. At the end of the rally I sought him out, put my arms around him and cried with him.

Two weeks later his picture was on the front page of the newspaper. He'd shot and killed his estranged wife. He will occupy for the rest of his life the prison cell that more rightly belongs to George W. Bush.

There is no forgetting.
