The faces of DERP

Yup, meet the braintrust behind the idea of carving part of Colorado into a 51st state, Weld County commissioners Freeman, Conway, and Rademacher. Conway previously served as chief of staff to Sen. Wayne Allard, dubbed the most useless senator.

Gotta love the facial expressions!

Welcome to my world.

Welcome to my world. My lifeís book has been open to the gubmint for well over twenty years, now. Thanks to health and physical issues Iíve been reliant on disability and other programs for quite some time. And every time I have to go through the recertification process I receive, from the county, copies of the relevant paperwork. The last page always has a final sentence, printed in a tiny font, to advise that my participation in these helping programs means that any of my personal information is available to the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies. That sucks.

The suckage isnít confined to just me. Itís for anyone who is enrolled with any of the myriad federal, state, county agencies. There are millions of us. Then you add in the millions and millions of those who arenít engaged with government agencies, and the numbers of the potentially invaded skyrocket exponentially. Now it sucks on a wider scale.

Itís more than a little disquietingly irksome, but I really do have to wonder -- where are the multitudes of ďpeekersĒ and ďlistenersĒ? They, too, must number in the millions in order to significantly violate. In my case, I almost almost feel sorry for my own personal Ďmonitorí who must be bored to tears.

No, Iím not making light of the issue. But I am recognizing, along with some in the unwinding-from- scandal-mode media, that this isnít exactly new. Has there been over-reach? Well, are humans involved? Are there corrective measures that can be taken? Yes, but not while weíre busy not howling at the ones who should be fixing it. Thereís a guy on the roof nailing down the last of the new shingles. Should I go yell at him and cuss him out because the guy who laid the cement for the foundation screwed up on a portion of one wall? Or would it be more appropriate - and more constructive - to ask the proper crew to address the issue and make it right?

Not a thing wrong with being outraged. It may be easier to focus our rage on just one person. But just because itís easier doesnít mean itís the right thing. And no one knows this better than those who are profoundly hoping that they can keep pointing our attention away from themselves.
