Well, the imploding may be new. But we've known for quite some time that yes, they are revolting.

Y'know what concerns me about Biden's age?

I'm five years younger than Biden, and he is way healthier than me physically and mentally. He's in good shape, in stark and obvious contrast to Trump. What concerns me is that too many folks on our side are so quick to join MAGAts in making his age an overblown issue. Is he old? Yes. But his age is not a disqualifier and should not be treated as such. Strictly IMHO, of course.

Not now.

I've been reliant on oxygen for over twenty years, starting with the little tanks. The home concentrator came a couple of years later, and I've been through several; it mostly feeds oxygen through my bi-pap. Anyhow, they sent a new concentrator, and all I had to do was plug it in, no biggie.

All was well until bedtime. I turned it on, and it began to make some very odd sounds, loudly. All the machines I've had have some kind of noise, usually like a spritzing lawn sprinkler half a block away; in other words, not loud at all. But not this one. It eventually calmed down a bit, and I convinced myself that I could get used to it. Hah. A bit after midnight it stopped its loud whooshing and went to a more usual two-syllable noise, but this time it sounded like, not kidding here, a whisper, sounded like "tay seen", over and over. Weird.

Second night, it only took a few seconds to drop to its version of normal volume, the "tay seen" continuing. Fast forward to 4am, and I was startled awake by the dang thing seeming to whisper right in my ear, "not now, not now, not now". Okay, enough already. I got up, turned the thing off, unplugged it, and wrestled it out of the way. Fortunately, I still had the previous machine and managed to get it back in place, turned it on and it let me go back to sleep.

Seeing as how I don't like machines that talk to me, I'm sending it back. Here's hoping they can send one that isn't into freaky babble. Yeesh.

Sleeping with the lights on

For years it was my habit to read myself to sleep at night. Reading was an inherited habit; we had shelves full of books from the personal libraries of my grandfather and great-grandfather, mostly histories with the notable exception of a collection of massive Shakespeare tomes. My preference developed toward historical novels, with occasional forays into non-fiction.

One non-fiction book broke my nighttime habit. We’d all followed the news coverage of the Manson murders and the subsequent trials and the interviews of those involved. Some of those interviews were just plain mind-boggling, with some of the comments suggesting a substantial disconnect from reality. It all seemed so unreal, so beyond comprehension, the unreality compounded by appearances that were otherwise completely normal. So, of course I read Bugliosi’s Helter Skelter, which had me sleeping with the lights on for weeks and confining any reading to daylight hours.

I hadn’t thought about that in decades, so it was a bit of a surprise when it wriggled its way into current thinking. It didn’t take long to realize that the memory was triggered by media interviews with Trump voters, and it was a gut-clenching realization. Although I’m not suggesting murderous stabbing rampages, I can’t pretend that January 6 didn’t happen, that threats against jurors and jurists and election workers aren’t happening, that the one who is the focus of their lives thrives on hate and is promising vengeance and angry retribution. They are smugly obstinate in their devotion to his deprivations and cruelty and proven criminality, and they dare us to do anything about it.

It looks like I'm back to sleeping with the lights on for a while.

Weld judge: County commissioners' redistricting failed to comply with Colorado law

Weld County commissioner district lines will need to be redrawn after a Weld district judge ruled that the board of commissioners failed to comply with a state law against gerrymandering when redistricting early last year.

Judge Todd Taylor prohibited the district map adopted March 1 from being used in any upcoming elections and ordered the board to begin a redistricting process, according to the order handed down Friday.

In the lawsuit filed Oct. 23, the plaintiffs — the League of Women Voters of Greeley and Weld County, along with the Latino Coalition of Weld County and two Weld County residents — alleged the commissioners acted in violation of state House Bill 21-1047 by not providing proper public notice of hearings on the redistricting process and by improperly drawing a map that divided a community of interest.

In Weld County it's been roughly thirty years since any non-republican sat on the board of commissioners. That needs to change. It won't be easy, but this helps to make that change a bit more possible.
