Bernie Sanders' Quiet Triumph in the 2016 Race

Sanders didn't win the nomination, but he won the argument, shaping key Clinton policies and the future of the party

http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/bernie-sanders-quiet-triumph-in-the-2016-race-20160712

Sanders' quiet triumph extends beyond the policy proposals Hillary Clinton is now promising to enact as president. The Democratic Party's national platform — a statement of values and vision more than a governing agenda — now reads like it was cribbed from Sanders' campaign website.

The platform, enacted with the participation of Sanders' delegates, calls for legal marijuana and a $15-an-hour minimum wage. To reform Wall Street, it demands the breakup of too-big-to-fail banks and a reinstatement of Glass-Steagall, separating high-risk investment banking from traditional commercial banking. On criminal-justice reform, it calls for the abolition of the death penalty, an end to private prisons and for routine Justice Department reviews of police shootings. On climate, the platform exhorts Congress to place a price on carbon and methane pollution, to weigh climate in all policy decisions and to invest heavily in wind, solar and other renewable energy sources.

With these ideals now spelled out in black and white, the Democratic platform reinforces a line Sanders used frequently in his stump speech: "Our vision of economic, social, racial and environmental justice is the future of America," he would say, "and the future of the Democratic Party."

Rather than claim victory for revolutionizing the platform, Sanders has deflected the credit to his supporters. "We have made enormous strides," Sanders said last week. "Thanks to the millions of people across the country who got involved in the political process — many for the first time — we now have the most progressive platform in the history of the Democratic Party."

Drunken Schmuck with handgun arrested (no really, his name's Schmuck)

https://cumberland.crimewatchpa.com/carlislepd/5632/arrests/schmuck-christopher-robert-weapons-carrying-violation-reckless-endangerment-public

CPD OFFICERS WERE CALLED TO THE QUICK STOP DELI, 601 WEST LOUTHER STREET FOR A MALE WITH A GUN. OFFICERS LATER ENCOUNTERED CHRISTOPHER R SCHMUCK AT THE FRONT OF THE BUSINESS. SCHMUCK CONCEALED A 45 CALIBER GLOCK HANDGUN IN HIS WAISTBAND. FURTHER INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT SCHMUCK WAS HIGHLY INTOXICATED AND WAS ATTEMPTING TO PROVIDE GUN SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS TO TWO TEENAGERS. AT ONE POINT, THE WEAPON HAD A LIVE ROUND IN THE CHAMBER. SCHMUCK DID NOT HAVE A LICENSE TO CARRY A HANDGUN. HE WAS CHARGED WITH WEAPONS VIOLATIONS, RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT, PUBLIC DRUNKENNNESS AND DISORDERLY CONDUCT.

Photo of the responsible gun owner. Looks like a Schmuck, acts like a Schmuck, must be a Schmuck.

"...hot pockets and a new Holocaust"

http://www.rawstory.com/2016/07/gop-strategist-trump-knows-his-fans-are-guys-screaming-for-hot-pockets-and-a-new-holocaust/

Regarding Herr Drumpf...
“This is a guy who understands that the center of his play is this deeply resentful, edge case group of people who really believe that the Jews control the world, and that white nationalism is the future of American politics,” Wilson told MSNBC host Chris Hayes. “And they range in sophistication from, you know, the guys who are fairly clever race-baiters who try to stay out of the dirtier slums to the crazies in mom’s basement screaming for hot pockets and a new Holocaust.”

The GOP’s presumptive presidential nominee was criticized yet again over the weekend after he shared a picture online depicting Hillary Clinton next to a Star of David and atop a pile of money which was traced back to a Twitter user who has regularly shared anti-Semitic images.

“At one level, it’s like if it were any other campaign, you’d look at this and be like, ‘Well that was a dumb oversight,'” Hayes said. “But it’s because of how consistent this has been that you’re now litigating the origins of what I think is an image that if you passed by any competent staffer — Republican, Democrat, independent, left or right — would immediately say, ‘Obviously, obviously do not associate that with the official campaign account.'”

OSHA announces 78% hike in fines for workplace safety violations to start Aug. 1

http://www.constructiondive.com/news/osha-announces-78-hike-in-fines-for-workplace-safety-violations-to-start-a/421932/

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced its interim rule Thursday that raises existing maximum civil penalties by 78% to comply with a federally mandated rate increase.

OSHA will raise its maximum penalty for serious violations from $7,000 to $12,471 and will increase the fine for willful and repeated violations from $70,000 to $124,709.

OSHA capped its new penalty amounts at 150% of their current levels, and the higher fines will go into effect Aug. 1 for infractions occurring after Nov. 2, 2015. Now that the interim rule has gone into effect, OSHA will accept public comments for 45 days before issuing its final rule.

Independence Day Delusions

“Necessitous men are not free men.” - FDR in his Economic Bill of Rights Speech

http://www.commondreams.org/views/2016/07/04/independence-day-delusions

Is Our Nation Really "Free"?

According to the watchdog organization Freedom House, in terms of political and civil liberties the U.S. is tied for 44th freest country, after UK, Chile, Japan, Portugal, and most of the Scandinavian nations. The organization's 2016 synopsis states: "The United States received a downward trend arrow because of the cumulative impact of flaws in the electoral system, a disturbing increase in the role of private money in election campaigns and the legislative process, legislative gridlock, the failure of the Obama administration to fulfill promises of enhanced government openness, and fresh evidence of racial discrimination and other dysfunctions in the criminal justice system."

A Free Market? Corporations Are Free to Subjugate Consumers

Corporations assume the freedom to deny their customers the right to fight back against corporate malfeasance. A New York Times report notes that companies have found a way to "circumvent the courts and bar people from joining together in class-action lawsuits," by inserting individual arbitration clauses in consumer contracts.

Freedom from Want? Poverty Keeps Getting Worse.

It's shocking to learn that nearly two-thirds of Americans don't have the savings to pay for a $500 car repair. It brings to mind the poverty of the 1930s, when FDR included "Freedom from Want" as one of the four basic freedoms to which we all have a right. Today, apparently, most of us are deprived of that right.

Real Freedom

In "Common Sense," Thomas Paine spoke of our "common interest [to] mutually and naturally support each other." Freedom and security, he noted, is the design and end of government.

This means freedom for the greatest number of us, not just for the self-centered individuals who see community as an impediment to their taking of our nation's wealth.
