Didn't you post an apology for this? eom

Call on me bettyellen

Call on me!

I can't try to identify 'intent' by a poster at DU - but I think once again - what gets said in PM's and in other places away from DU in speaks volumes.

Just in case you forgot - this was *I think* in response to black Americans and specifically those at DU (to include this star member) being kind of about a school celebrating black history month by serving 'stereotypical' foods. I think MrScorpio did a pretty good job - if anyone is interested in digging into this stereotype of pointing out just why the school was being ignorant.

Then the same poster posted an apology.

Okay - so in the 'margins' we all sort of discussed it and well - it's like when someone says, "Hey no offense!" after making a joke about black people around black people.

You wink, smile, maybe even nod your head - but that individual is never to be respected again. Polite is one thing- respect or taking seriously is another.

In real life - nothing to do with DU or even this thread - just in real life I tend to treat those people that I encounter as too wet to step on and too low to kick because they *think* they've gotten away with something but then I can always come to DU and ridicule them or snicker and giggle about it with my husband.

Just snicker and giggle - because you aren't crazy. That happened. We both know it happened. And from this distance it seems so obvious . . .

Jordan Davis Murder Trial thread

Post in LBN yesterday by another DUer for highest level information - http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1014&pid=717136 I.E. – Trial Underway

Jury Selection is now underways -

Jury selection began Monday in the controversial murder trial of Michael Dunn, the 47-year-old software developer who fatally shot unarmed teen Jordan Davis in November 2012.

Dunn is accused of shooting and killing Davis after an argument over loud music in a gas station parking lot in Jacksonville, Florida. Dunn claims the teen was threatening him, and he shot Davis in self-defense. Police never found a weapon on Davis or in the SUV he was in.

Before opening statements begin next week, HLN is taking a look back at everything that has led up to this moment, including stepping into Dunn's world behind bars. Twenty-five of his jailhouse letters have been released to the public, according to Jacksonville's WTEV.

While claiming in a letter to his grandmother that he's not a racist, Dunn repeatedly refers to Davis and his friends as thugs, and in a letter to his daughter he talks about how "the jail is full of blacks and they All act like thugs."

Quotes from his letters to his grandmother at Huffpo –

Excerpts from Letter(s) to Grandma

The jail is full of blacks and they all act like thugs. This may sound a bit radical but if more people would arm themselves and kill these (expletive) idiots, when they're threatening you, eventually they may take the hint and change their behavior.

I'm really not prejudiced against race, but I have no use for certain cultures. This gangster-rap, ghetto talking thug 'culture' that certain segments of society flock to is intolerable. They espouse violence and disrespect towards women. The black community here in Jacksonville is in an uproar against me -- the three other thugs that were in the car are telling stories to cover up their true "colors."

I am amazed at what is going on with the way the media has been covering this case. Their [sic] have been several other shootings here in Jacksonville, yet they are all either black-on-black or black-on-white, and none of them have garnered any attention from the media. I guess it's news when someone dares to not to be a victim, but they are twisting it around sand saying I was the "bad guy."

That last quote - 'When someone dares to not be a victim' - I guess we'll have to wait and see until the evidence is released but as I understand it -

There were three other men in the car.
Not one of them had a gun.
There were other witnesses at the gas station.
He was not threatened - just a drunk.
They (he and his female partner) ran from the scene of the crime. Even the Zimpig stuck around. That's right - even the Zimpig stuck around.

Thought I would start this for anyone wishing to discuss but maybe bruised a little around the psyche from the Trayvon Martin Murder Trial.

Two Black Women Walk Into The Grocery Store . . .

A joke does not follow. This is posted at CrackingTheCodes.org - a brief four minutes - in her shoes . . . Skin . . . Neighborhood.

What I love about this - her sister in law who appears white understood what was happening. My mother or husband or best friend would have said the same thing her sister in law did. They would honor the experience and use it as a way to teach someone something about the policies and practices and social construct they live in . . that allow these things to happen.

Jordan Davis' murderer settles civil suit with his parents

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The attorney for the parents of 17-year old Jordan Davis confirmed to Channel 4 that all civil suits against Michael Dunn have been resolved.

In a text, John Phillips wrote: "We made an offer to settle both cases against Michael Dunn - 1) the estate of Jordan Davis' case and 2) the case of two boys we represent. They accepted the offer in full. We cannot disclose the offer at this time, but it resolved all civil suits in principle."

Jordan Davis' parents filed a civil suit against Dunn in January of 2013. In the lawsuit they claimed Dunn and his lawyers made several defamatory claims, including claims of Davis and his friends having a gun belonging to a gang or destroying any physical evidence that proves Dunn's innocence. Davis' family said they wanted to restore their son's reputation.

Dunn's criminal trial is scheduled to start on February 3. We'll continue to follow this story and bring you much more throughout the weekend.

Now - onto the Criminal Trial on February 3rd.

ETA - this guy is a real beaut! His attorney must just love him.

Dunn Quotes:
“The jail is full of blacks and they all act like thugs. This may sound a bit radical but if more people would arm themselves and kill these (expletive) idiots, when they’re threatening you, eventually they may take the hint and change their behavior.”

The fear is that we may get a predominately black jury and therefore, unlikely to get a favorable verdict. Sad, but that’s where this country is still at. The good news is that the surrounding counties are predominately white and Republican and supporters of gun rights.”

Yes I Shot That Kid - Brian Cloninger

Thanks to skidmore for posting this in G.D.

8 year old little boy is shot by a 46 year old man .. .

An 8-year-old African-American boy in Texas is struggling to recover after being shot in the face by a 46-year-old white man, but authorities have not been able to determine a motive.

Dallas police said that Donald Maiden Jr., who had just celebrated his 8th birthday on Sunday, was playing tag outside his apartment complex on Tuesday. According to his grandmother, Maiden ran inside to get some toys and was shot as came back outside.

Witnesses told police that 46-year-old Brian Cloninger had been seen waiving a handgun at people prior to the shooting, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Police reports said that Cloninger was seen standing beside his pickup truck as the boy was bleeding, and a witness asked him if he shot the boy.

Motive? Only motive I can see is he is an asshooooooooooooooole.

I'm beginning to think Dems outside of NJ are all about Christie

I know we don't have a lot of activity back here - but if Democratic Underground - with highly aware Liberals and Progressives are so about Christie and willing to give him a free pass - no wonder the national Democratic Leadership thinks they can get away with ignoring this election.

There is nothing Walker did, says, believes that Chris Christie doesn't.

So why do you guys think they are so willing and ready to say "But he did one good thing once so he's unstoppable."

If he is the 2016 anointed one - does this mean we are now in play as a battleground state?

Why does a discussion of racism (as it relates to black Americans) always dissolve . . .

Into a discussion about ALL the many ways whites Americans, Canadian Americans, Europeans to Europeans were ALSO treated?

Reference this 350 reply thread (at the time of this posting)

I'm not just talking about at DU - I'm talking in general - in the entire world. But that's one example.

Why most NON African Americans - folks outside of the 'slave ancestor experience' always DIMINISH our experience with ancient 'Tribal' fights amongst Europeans? Why not start a new thread for those discussions?

Is it yet another form of subtle racism/white supremacy? I.E. - Another case of "I can't honor YOUR experience at all let alone see HOW we are different and HOW your life/race experience in America has shaped you because well - I'm Dominant So There!"

I'm looking at two posters

On that thread - and yes - I read and responded to it the other day - then tossed it aside . . .

And notice - who on there that 'CONTROLLED' the Trayvon Martin court case discussion threads are on there yet again?

I'm telling you -the one that as of today is just hovering around 1000K posts gives me the creeps. Like I wouldn't be surprised if he was sent over here by Storm Front. I think the racists are much more sophisticated than we give them credit for.

It's all part of 'chipping away' at people to recruit them for their cause.

Just look at those to Trayvon Discussion Controllers on that thread - and tell me I'm not right. But those two are VERY good and it's going to take a great deal of little pin pricks to get them a pizza delivery.

Trayvon Martin and I Ain't Sh*t

Note at the top of the New Yorker Article - and background on the author: The following essay is an adaptation of a Facebook post by Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson in response to George Zimmerman's acquittal in the killing of Trayvon Martin. Questlove is the drummer for the Roots and the bandleader on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

I recently told a friend one of these stories: I live in a "nice" building. I work hard. You know I work hard. My logic is (naïve alert in 5, 4, 3, 2 … ) "Well, there can't be any fear of any type in this building" — you've got to go through hell and high water just to get accepted to live here, like it's Dartmouth or UPenn. Secondly, there are, like, five to eight guards on duty 24/7, so this spot is beyond safe. Like, Oscar winners and kids of royalty and sports guys and mafia goombahs live here. One night, I get in the elevator, and just as the door closes this beautiful woman gets on. Because of a pain in the arse card device you have to use to get to your floor, it just makes it an easier protocol for whoever is pressing floors to take everyone's request, like when you are at the window of a drive-thru. So I press my floor number, and I ask her, "What floor, ma'am?" (Yes, I say "ma'am," because … sigh, anyway.) She says nothing, stands in the corner. Mind you, I just discovered the Candy Crush app, so if anything, I'm the rude one because I'm more obsessed with winning this particular level than anything else. In my head I'm thinking, There's no way I can be a threat to a woman this fine if I'm buried deep in this game — so surely she feels safe.

The humor comes in that I thought she was on my floor because she never acknowledged my floor request. (She was also bangin', so inside I was like, "Dayuuuuuuuuuuum, she lives on my floor? *bow chicka wowow*!" Instantly I was on some "What dessert am I welcome-committee-ing her with?" Anywho, the door opens, and I waited to let her off first because I am a gentleman. (Old me would've rushed first, thus not putting me in the position to have to follow her, God forbid if she, too, makes a left and it seems like I'm following her.) So door opens and I flirt, "Ladies first." She says, "This is not my floor." Then I assume she is missing her building card, so I pulled my card out to try to press her floor yet again. She says, "That's okay."

Then it hit me: "Oh God, she purposely held that information back." The door closed. It was a "pie in the face" moment. I laughed at it. Sort of.

Inside I cried. But if I cried at every insensitive act that goes on in the name of safety, I'd have to be committed to a psych ward. I've just taught myself throughout the years to just accept it and maybe even see it as funny. But it kept eating at me (Well, I guess she never watched the show … My English was super clear … I called her "ma'am" like I was Webster … Those that know you know that you're cool, but you definitely know that you are a walking

If you aren't familiar with his writing - he's a good a read. He lends humor to the experiences of black men - but at the same time - shows . . . you know what?

Does anyone EVER think that their prejudices might HURT someone at an emotional and human dignity level? He also shows in this piece - you know what? It's not always about you! I was just trying to level up in Candy Crush.
