DETROIT (AP) — Detroit's emergency manager took a series of decisive steps Thursday, telling unions he's canceling their contracts, ousting City Council President Charles Pugh for skipping work and outsourcing the failing public lighting department.


Contracts for the American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees Council 25 and the Detroit Police Lieutenants & Sergeants Association will end when they expire in the coming weeks, said Bill Nowling, spokesman for state-appointed emergency manager Kevyn Orr.


Orr also signed an order Thursday stripping the pay and authority from City Council President Charles Pugh, who has been absent from City Hall for undisclosed reasons. He's also been a no-show at recent council meetings and failed to acknowledge by a 5 p.m. Wednesday deadline that he would be returning to work.


Pugh also is the subject of a complaint the Detroit Public Schools received from the mother of a recent graduate who says the councilman had improper contacts with her teenage son.

We know that Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez has been arrested. We don’t know why.

Massachusetts State Police have issued a statement via Twitter (where else?) indicating that they won’t be disclosing the charge against Hernandez until he appears in court.

It’s unclear when he will appear in court. It presumably will happen at some point today. But he’ll need to be processed first, including mugshots and fingerprints and whatever else they do when someone is arrested.

We can argue the legalities of FISA or secret courts or whatever until doomsday but that isn't what's pissing people off...it's the betrayal of all the things we voted for in 2008

We voted for the guy who promised that the most vulnerable amongst us would be taken care of....who is now pushing for chained CPI and isn't fighting lowered food stamps while allowing the richest amongst us to get ever richer

We voted for the guy who said he would never sign a health care reform bill without *a robust public option* and then he threw that under the bus without a fight.


This NSA and spying stuff is just the tipping point that made a lot of us say WTF happened to the guy we were working for in 2008?

What happened to hope and change?What happened to government of the people?
