Romney meets meets 'Mr Leader' Ed Miliband

The Republican party presidential candidate Mitt Romney is in London for the Olympic games and talks with senior politicians, including Labour's Ed Miliband, who he referred to as "Mr Leader".

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-19000272

Can he meet Mrs. Leader?

July 26, 2012

The English Roots of the name Romney- Sheep, Gypsies and horses.

I was curious after his anglo saxon remark so I found this from 2006

1. Romney as a Breed of Sheep.

Romney is also the name for a breed of sheep. See fleeces on and off the hoof at http://www.romneywool.com/fleeces.html.

Will voters say Baa? Feel fleeced? Or follow follow follow. Need to look up origin of sheep types. A start: the American Romney Breeders at http://www.americanromney.org/.

Romney, then, from the sheep connection, are sturdy and meat-producing. See http://www.americanromney.org/b_breedstd_white.html. The sheep originated in the Romney Marshes of Kent, England - see paragraph on the Romney Marsh at #3 here. Were the people thereafter associated?

2. Romney as colloquial, a clan of Gypsy?
.
Roma.
.
Romney as colloquial. Is it merely that? A search for "romney gypsy" turns up odd references to Romney Gypsies, but nothing concrete. The term is simply used in different contexts, informal mostly.

3. Romney as a bog.

Romney is also a marsh in Kent, England, where there is a tearoom serving scones etc. See http://www.lathebarn.co.uk.

Romney Marsh. The location is on Donkey Street. The Romney breed of sheep came from here - see this long-wool type (new word: flockmaster) at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romney_(sheep).

4. Romney as a language, all its own.

Romney is also a word for the "Cant" that was spoken by Gypsies, a languages others could not understand. See "The Genesis of Anglo-Romani" at Scholarship and the Gypsy Struggle. This is the heading for a Google book online with an enormously long URL -http://books.google.com/books?id=CGWFAQ9RZ0oC&pg=PA26&lpg=PA26&dq=england+romney+gypsy&source=web&ots=CMpN0NAojx&sig=0cfy0vVMYW8KBwElLNu6HZHxC20.

Do a search for England Romney Gypsy and it should come up. See post here at Gypsies, Roma: Cant.

5. Romney as a road to somewhere.

And there is a Romney Road in Greenwich, England. That is where the Greenwich Royal Observatory is. Very long URL, so do a search to see it. Greenwich SE 10. Was this connected at some time with a community of gypsies, or not?

6. Romney as a traditional surname itself for gypsies, and not just a word for the group? Unclear.

The word is similar to the word for Gypsies or Roma, but we have not found it as a surname in itself, chosen or used by a specific family.
.
Romney as a surname in itself is not listed among the gypsy surnames at this site, for example- http://foclark.tripod.com/gypsy/presentsurnames.html.

Jason Alexander long twit on Assault Weapons

I'd like to preface this long tweet by saying that my passion comes from my deepest sympathy and shared sorrow with yesterday's victims and with the utmost respect for the people and the police/fire/medical/political forces of Aurora and all who seek to comfort and aid these victims.

This morning, I made a comment about how I do not understand people who support public ownership of assault style weapons like the AR-15 used in the Colorado massacre. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AR-15

That comment, has of course, inspired a lot of feedback. There have been many tweets of agreement and sympathy but many, many more that have been challenging at the least, hostile and vitriolic at the worst.

Clearly, the angry, threatened and threatening, hostile comments are coming from gun owners and gun advocates. Despite these massacres recurring and despite the 100,000 Americans that die every year due to domestic gun violence - these people see no value to even considering some kind of control as to what kinds of weapons are put in civilian hands.

Many of them cite patriotism as their reason - true patriots support the Constitution adamantly and wholly. Constitution says citizens have the right to bear arms in order to maintain organized militias. I'm no constitutional scholar so here it is from the document itself:

As passed by the Congress:
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
As ratified by the States and authenticated by Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State:
"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

So the patriots are correct, gun ownership is in the constitution - if you're in a well-regulated militia. Let's see what no less a statesman than Alexander Hamilton had to say about a militia:

"A tolerable expertness in military movements is a business that requires time and practice. It is not a day, or even a week, that will suffice for the attainment of it. To oblige the great body of the yeomanry, and of the other classes of the citizens, to be under arms for the purpose of going through military exercises and evolutions, as often as might be necessary to acquire the degree of perfection which would entitle them to the character of a well-regulated militia, would be a real grievance to the people, and a serious public inconvenience and loss."

Or from Merriam-Webster dictionary:
Definition of MILITIA
1
a : a part of the organized armed forces of a country liable to call only in emergency
b : a body of citizens organized for military service
2
: the whole body of able-bodied male citizens declared by law as being subject to call to military service

The advocates of guns who claim patriotism and the rights of the 2nd Amendment - are they in well-regulated militias? For the vast majority - the answer is no.

Then I get messages from seemingly decent and intelligent people who offer things like: @BrooklynAvi: Guns should only be banned if violent crimes committed with tomatoes means we should ban tomatoes. OR @nysportsguys1: Drunk drivers kill, should we ban fast cars?

I'm hoping that right after they hit send, they take a deep breath and realize that those arguments are completely specious. I believe tomatoes and cars have purposes other than killing. What purpose does an AR-15 serve to a sportsman that a more standard hunting rifle does not serve? Let's see - does it fire more rounds without reload? Yes. Does it fire farther and more accurately? Yes. Does it accommodate a more lethal payload? Yes. So basically, the purpose of an assault style weapon is to kill more stuff, more fully, faster and from further away. To achieve maximum lethality. Hardly the primary purpose of tomatoes and sports cars.

Then there are the tweets from the extreme right - these are the folk who believe our government has been corrupted and stolen and that the forces of evil are at play, planning to take over this nation and these folk are going to fight back and take a stand. And any moron like me who doesn't see it should...
a. be labeled a moron
b. shut the fuck up
c. be removed

And amazingly, I have some minor agreement with these folks. I believe there are evil forces at play in our government. But I call them corporatists. I call them absolutists. I call them the kind of ideologues from both sides, but mostly from the far right who swear allegiance to unelected officials that regardless of national need or global conditions, are never to levy a tax. That they are never to compromise or seek solutions with the other side. That are to obstruct every possible act of governance, even the ones they support or initiate. Whose political and social goal is to marginalize the other side, vilify and isolate them with the hope that they will surrender, go away or die out.

These people believe that the US government is eventually going to go street by street and enslave our citizens. Now as long as that is only happening to liberals, homosexuals and democrats - no problem. But if they try it with anyone else - it's going to be arms-ageddon and these committed, God-fearing, brave souls will then use their military-esque arsenal to show the forces of our corrupt government whats-what. These people think they meet the definition of a "militia". They don't. At least not the constitutional one. And, if it should actually come to such an unthinkable reality, these people believe they would win. That's why they have to "take our country back". From who? From anyone who doesn't think like them or see the world like them. They hold the only truth, everyone else is dangerous. Ever meet a terrorist that doesn't believe that? Just asking.

Then there are the folks who write that if everyone in Colorado had a weapon, this maniac would have been stopped. Perhaps. But I do believe that the element of surprise, tear gas and head to toe kevlar protection might have given him a distinct edge. Not only that, but a crowd of people firing away in a chaotic arena without training or planning - I tend to think that scenario could produce even more victims.

Lastly, there are these well-intended realists that say that people like this evil animal would get these weapons even if we regulated them. And they may be right. But he wouldn't have strolled down the road to Kmart and picked them up. Regulated, he would have had to go to illegal sources - sources that could possibly be traced, watched, overseen. Or he would have to go deeper online and those transactions could be monitored. "Hm, some guy in Aurora is buying guns, tons of ammo and kevlar - plus bomb-making ingredients and tear gas. Maybe we should check that out."

But that won't happen as long as all that activity is legal and unrestricted.

I have been reading on and off as advocates for these weapons make their excuses all day long. Guns don't kill - people do. Well if that's correct, I go with @BrooklynAvi, let them kill with tomatoes. Let them bring baseball bats, knives, even machetes --- a mob can deal with that.

There is no excuse for the propagation of these weapons. They are not guaranteed or protected by our constitution. If they were, then we could all run out and purchase a tank, a grenade launcher, a bazooka, a SCUD missile and a nuclear warhead. We could stockpile napalm and chemical weapons and bomb-making materials in our cellars under our guise of being a militia.

These weapons are military weapons. They belong in accountable hands, controlled hands and trained hands. They should not be in the hands of private citizens to be used against police, neighborhood intruders or people who don't agree with you. These are the weapons that maniacs acquire to wreak murder and mayhem on innocents. They are not the same as handguns to help homeowners protect themselves from intruders. They are not the same as hunting rifles or sporting rifles. These weapons are designed for harm and death on big scales.

SO WHY DO YOU CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THEM? WHY DO YOU NOT, AT LEAST, AGREE TO SIT WITH REASONABLE PEOPLE FROM BOTH SIDES AND ASK HARD QUESTIONS AND LOOK AT HARD STATISTICS AND POSSIBLY MAKE SOME COMPROMISES FOR THE GREATER GOOD? SO THAT MOTHERS AND FATHERS AND CHILDREN ARE NOT SLAUGHTERED QUITE SO EASILY BY THESE MONSTERS? HOW CAN IT HURT TO STOP DEFENDING THESE THINGS AND AT LEAST CONSIDER HOW WE CAN ALL WORK TO TRY TO PREVENT ANOTHER DAY LIKE YESTERDAY?

We will not prevent every tragedy. We cannot stop every maniac. But we certainly have done ourselves no good by allowing these particular weapons to be acquired freely by just about anyone.

I'll say it plainly - if someone wants these weapons, they intend to use them. And if they are willing to force others to "pry it from my cold, dead hand", then they are probably planning on using them on people.

So, sorry those of you who tell me I'm an actor, or a has-been or an idiot or a commie or a liberal and that I should shut up. You can not watch my stuff, you can unfollow and you can call me all the names you like. I may even share some of them with my global audience so everyone can get a little taste of who you are.

But this is not the time for reasonable people, on both sides of this issue, to be silent. We owe it to the people whose lives were ended and ruined yesterday to insist on a real discussion and hopefully on some real action.

In conclusion, whoever you are and wherever you stand on this issue, I hope you have the joy of family with you today. Hold onto them and love them as best you can. Tell them what they mean to you. Yesterday, a whole bunch of them went to the movies and tonight their families are without them. Every day is precious. Every life is precious. Take care. Be well. Be safe. God bless.

Jason Alexander

the number is changed new.

Correction all: the 100,000 guns deaths should be 100,000 incidents of death or injury with guns per annum. My bad. Number still sucks."

God Delays Title Transfer Of Earth To Meek Yet Again

HEAVEN—In a statement released today God, the supreme being and creator of the universe, confirmed that he has once again postponed the transfer of the planet Earth to the meek.
Representatives of the meek confirmed that, to date, they have not inherited anything. Gustavo Barros, 67, a blind, homeless man from the slums of Rio De Janeiro, read a statement prepared by the group. “At this time we are, unfortunately, still poor, hungry, and downtrodden,” said Barros. “Moreover, based on the lack of response from God to our repeated inquiries, we're fairly certain that for the foreseeable future, the Earth will remain in the control of the powerful interests that seek to maintain the status quo.”

The news came as a great relief to the non-meek, everywhere. “When they announced that release I started getting really nervous,” said Joel Quinlan, 50, a Connecticut hedge fund manager worth over $7 billion. “I was like, ‘Uh oh. The jig is up. The meek have inherited the Earth and I’m probably going to lose my yacht.’ But it turned out it was just a false alarm. I was so relieved I bought myself another yacht.”

Many non-meek questioned the meek’s ability to manage the Earth, were they to inherit it. “I don’t think these ‘meek’ should be running things,” said Yousuf Qureshi, 33, a Somali warlord who has killed over 400 people. “They are not proactive enough.”

Kim Jong-Un May Have Just Suppressed a Coup

The South Korean government is investigating unconfirmed intelligence reports that a gun battle, leaving between 20 and 30 soldiers dead, broke out when the North Korean regime removed army chief Ri Yong-ho from office.

The Chosun Ilbo, a South Korean daily newspaper, reported that some intelligence analysts believe Mr Ri, who has not been seen since his abrupt sacking earlier this week, was injured or killed in the confrontation.
Citing South Korean government officials, it said the gun battle erupted when vice marshal Choe Ryong Hae, director of the People's Army General Political Bureau, tried to detain Mr Ri while carrying out North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's order to sack him.
Guards protecting Mr Ri, who was a vice marshal, apparently opened fire.

"We cannot rule out the possibility that Ri was injured or even killed in the firefight," one source said.

Kim Jong-Un May Have Just Suppressed a Coup

It appears Kim Jong-un's consolidation of power this week was far more turbulent than outsiders were led to believe. How much more turbulent remains subject to dispute.

On Friday unconfirmed reports emerged from South Korea of a gun battle between North Korean soldiers over the ouster of army chief Ri Yong-ho. According to the South Korean daily The Chosun Ilbo, soldiers led by Vice Marshal Choe Ryong Hae attempted to detain Ri after he was dismissed from his position on Monday. According to South Korean government officials, that's when guards protecting Ri opened fire on the soldiers in a gun battle that left 20 to 30 North Korean soldiers dead. The source also said "We cannot rule out the possibility that Ri was injured or even killed in the firefight." Backing up that story, an official at South Korea's Ministry of National Defense told The Korea Times that the order may have been an attempt to suppress a military coup. “It is highly likely that Ri’s security squad engaged in a firefight with troops deployed to execute the leadership’s instruction to unseat him and prevent a possible coup against the top military official,” the official said. Western news agencies have been unable to confirm any details of the supposed gun battle, but one thing is becoming increasingly clear: Ri's departure was not due to an "illness."

That point was cemented today in a blockbuster report by Reuters Benjamin Kang Lim, who cited a source "with ties to both Pyongyang and Beijing" saying that Ri was purged after he opposed Kim's attempt to takeover the North Korean economy, which has historically been under the control of the military. Lim reports that Kim sought to impose a series of agricultural and economic reforms that Ri opposed:

Real Gorilla Youngsters Seen Dismantling Poachers’ Traps

Just days after a poacher’s snare had killed one of their own, two young mountain gorillas worked together Tuesday to find and destroy traps in their Rwandan forest home, according to conservationists on the scene.

?01AD=3QgCBIv6B9CPQLvIV0eau6-Uy8NUf-mj_-idHvzxr06-RdYd_uGSBDw&01RI=5E65821D1C0015C&01NA=na

“This is absolutely the first time that we’ve vseen juveniles doing that … I don’t know of any other reports in the world of juveniles destroying snares,” said Veronica Vecellio, gorilla program coordinator at the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund’s Karisoke Research Center, located in the reserve where the event took place.

“We are the largest database and observer of wild gorillas … so I would be very surprised if somebody else has seen that,” Vecellio added.

Bush-meat hunters set thousands of rope-and-branch snares in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, where the mountain gorillas live. The traps are intended for antelope and other species but sometimes capture the apes. Adults are generally strong enough to free themselves. Youngsters aren’t always so lucky. Just last week an ensnared infant named Ngwino, found too late by workers from Karisoke, died of snare-related wounds. Her shoulder had been dislocated during escape attempts, and gangrene had set in after the ropes cut deep into her leg. The hunters, Vecellio said, seem to have no interest in the gorillas. Even small apes, which would be relatively easy to carry away for sale, are left to die.

Rube Goldberg, Minus the Complexity

Poachers build the snares by tying a noose to a branch or a bamboo stalk, Vecellio explained. Using the rope, they pull the branch downward, bending it. They then use a bent stick or rock to hold the noose to the ground, keeping the branch tense. A sprinkling of vegetation camouflages the noose. When an animal budges the stick or rock, the branch springs upward, closing the noose around the prey. If the creature is light enough, it will actually be hoisted into the air.

James Eagan Holmes Facts

As part of the advanced program in Denver, a James Holmes had been listed as making a presentation in May about Micro DNA Biomarkers in a class named “Biological Basis of Psychiatric and Neurological Disorders.”

http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/07/21/dark-knight-rises-shooting-apartment-2012/

James Eagan Holmes Facts

The 1985 comic book, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, contains a scene in which a lunatic kills people in a movie theater.

Columbine High School (1999 shooting) is 12 miles from the movie theater.

Holmes was wearing a ballistic helmet and vest, ballistic leggings, throat and groin protector, a gas mask and black tactical gloves, armed with the three weapons.
Holmes had painted his hair red and said he was The Joker, the arch-nemesis of Batman.
Holmes bought a ticket to the midnight show and entered the theater with the crowd

. Holmes then allegedly propped open an exit door after the movie started, put on protective gear, then started shooting.

One witness stated seeing a white male ON A CELL PHONE prop open the emergency exit shortly after the movie started, and just before the shooting began.

Most of the victims shot were those standing up and running out of the theater, with far less seated moviegoers being hit, and none ducking down to the floor being hit.

Holmes reportedly fled to the parking lot after the shooting spree, then was confronted by 25 police officers and taken into custody.
Holmes asked for an attorney and invoked his right to remain silent.

Another .40-caliber handgun with a cache of ammunition was found in Holmes' 2-door white car, which was parked in the movie theater parking lot behind the rear exit.

The guns were purchased in May, June and July at Gander Mountain Guns shops and at Bass Pro shops in Colorado.

May 22, bought a Glock pistol in Aurora, CO. May 28, bought a Remington shotgun in Denver, CO. Early June, bought a .223 caliber Smith & Wesson rifle in Thornton, CO. July 6, bought a second Glock in Denver, CO.
At least one of of Holmes' gun purchases was recorded by a video surveillance camera.

During the last 60 days, Holmes had allegedly been stockpiling more than 6,000 rounds of ammunition through purchases on the Internet.

Holmes' 3rd-floor apartment (1690 Paris Street) is 4 miles from the movie theater in Aurora.

Neighbors described Holmes as a recluse and a loner, who always kept curtains closed and lights off at night.

Police began searching Holmes' apartment building at 2:00 am, waking the residents for questioning and orders to evacuate.

Police found jars of chemicals (flammable or explosive material) in Holmes' booby-trapped apartment. Officers found trip-wires attached to 1-liter plastic bottles filled with a substance.

Police found 'disturbing' pictures in Holmes' apartment.

Holmes had left a techno song (to repeat in a loop from midnight to 1:00 am) blaring in the apartment. Neighbors called police about the noise shortly after midnight, but the song was left to play until automatically shutting off at 1:00.

Holmes left the door to his apartment unlocked.
