he future Pope John Paul II, while still archbishop of Kraków, knew of sexual abuse by priests subordinate to him but allowed them to continue working in the church and may even have tried to prevent the authorities from learning of their crimes, a new report by Polish broadcaster TVN claims.

The revelations come amid debate in Poland over the legacy of John Paul II – a national hero not only for his spiritual leadership but also for the role he played in inspiring opposition to the communist regime – with regard to historical abuse cases in the Catholic church.

The former pope’s defenders, led by the Polish episcopate, have often argued that John Paul II was unaware of the scale of abuse being covered up in the church and that the first signs began to reach him when he was already severely ill.

TVN – which has previously broadcast claims that John Paul II’s close associate and private secretary Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, ignored cases of sexual abuse in the Catholic church – yesterday aired a new report focused on how the former pope himself dealt with three cases of priests responsible for abuse.

Two of those cases – of Eugeniusz Surgent and Józef Loranc – have already been reported on by other journalists in recent months. But TVN’s report featured new evidence, including accounts directly from victims and witnesses.

The third case was that of Bolesław Saduś, who was responsible for overseeing religion classes for children in the archdiocese of Kraków and was a close acquaintance of the future pope, then known by his birth name of Karol Wojtyła and who served as archbishop of Kraków from 1964 to 1978.

The young widow watched as the helpers wended through the Zone at sunrise, offering what they could: water, a bus ticket or a shelter bed – if one was open.

Standing beside her tent, Rayann Denny sized up the sprawling camp of 900 or so people improvised along sidewalks in downtown Phoenix:

“It’s a whole another world.”

The soft-spoken 37-year-old ended up homeless last year after her husband died and she couldn’t pay the bills alone. This camp, she said, can be “a lot of drama,” with flares of violence. But Denny won’t stay in a shelter, with its rules and a curfew, as she relies on drugs to get through her days.

“I just try to keep myself high,” she said, “so I don’t have to deal with the pain.”

Her home base here, though – however scant – soon will vanish.

comment by Stuart: How the hell do we treat homeless in the U.S.A? Very sad, but not necessary. In certain parts of
the U.S. homeless people are treated far better. (Yes there are ..."State Programs" to treat very poor people. I don't know
about Phoenix, but some cities offer very cheap housing, or free places to live for the homeless. Well...I guess Texas is
not one of those places. Look at the picture at the link above. How do you explain this in a very rich country like the
U.S.A. and a very rich state like Arizonia.? I got no answer. Do you?

Ridiculous Fact few people know...One of the cheapest pain relievers is one of the most effective.

Test after test have proven this pain medicine is very effective. Furthermore, it is often the cheapest one out there.
If it were discovered today, Aspirin would be five dollars a pill.

But it wasn't discovered today or last year, or in the last 10 years. Aspirin has been out on the market for over 100 years.
Therefore, drug stores used the pain pill "Aspirin" to get people into the store. This medicine is taken for granted so often,
that most people don't know it is an effective medicine for pain. Aspirin is too cheap to be effective.

.......Well, that is wrong. Aspirin is so cheap because it has been out there for so long that patients have run out, and ..
since it was wanted, the stores had to have this medicine because people desired it, and it works.

Why say this? About a half an hour ago, I took an Aspirin tablet, and the pain is gone.



I had to share my world view of "Aspirin" with others at Democratic Underground............................
