India's New Delhi blanketed by toxic haze, world's most polluted city again

NEW DELHI, Nov 3 (Reuters) - India's capital New Delhi was wrapped in a thick layer of toxic haze on Friday and some schools were ordered closed as the air quality index (AQI) plummeted to the "severe" category.

New Delhi again topped a real-time list of the world's most polluted cities compiled by Swiss group IQAir, which put the Indian capital's AQI at 640 in the "hazardous" category on Friday, followed by 335 in the Pakistani city of Lahore.

Regional officials said a seasonal combination of lower temperatures, a lack of wind and crop stubble burning in neighbouring farm states had caused a spike in air pollutants.

Many of New Delhi's 20 million residents complained of irritation in the eyes and itchy throats with the air turning a dense grey as the AQI hovered around 480 in some monitoring stations.

An AQI of 0-50 is considered good while anything between 400-500 affects healthy people and is a danger to those with existing diseases.

Something very positive happened in the U. S. A. The air is much cleaner now than in the 50s..

Not a little...........but a .......(Whole lot cleaner than before in the 50s)

Many cities passed laws that outlawed, coal burning, over time autos were cleaned of their emissions.
Air clean laws were passed by many cities. Nuclear Power was reduced due to "Four Mile Island" break down.
(and many, many other improvements in the climate) Where I lived in South Chicago, we often got bad air
from the steal mills 15 miles away.
....1.......So many improvements in climate laws. The air is measured for pollution by the federal government........
....2......There are such things as.........."Bad Air Days"
....3....... Public Schools cannot heat with coal... (they were the last to follow the rules)...
....4...... Cars are much cleaner than they were in the 50s and 60s....In fact it is the law that they are clean of pollutants.
....5...... Cars are also much safer with the Air Bags and required seat belts in front and back
.....6...... People live longer and better due to medical improvements..
.....7...... Diets are better now. (People have a lot of choices these days as far as decent food is concerned. )

and ...............MORE AND MORE AND MORE, AND MORE AND MORE!
