30 Artists Responded To Trump's Refugee Ban With Powerful Drawings

30 Artists Responded To Trump's Refugee Ban With Powerful Drawings
by Mustafa Gatollari
January 31, 2017 2:23 am

People are up in arms about the proposed ban on refugees and green card holders in the United States. From former President Barack Obama, to businesses like Starbucks, hell, even Dale Earnhardt Jr. sympathized with Muslim refugees, saying that his ancestors traveled from Germany to escape religious persecution.

The refugee ban has resulted in countless protests and fervor that can be seen on social media.

And like any good protest, art is playing a huge part in the current ban of refugees and people all over the web are sharing painfully relevant and poignant works of art that speak to the current state of affairs.

Today's Google Doodle - Fred T. Korematsu who fought Japanese internment in the USA

It is beyond ironic that Google is honoring this man today - even though it is Mr. Korematsu's 98th birthday.

Fred T. Korematsu

Abbreviated Biography

Fred T. Korematsu was a national civil rights hero. In 1942, at the age of 23, he refused to go to the government’s incarceration camps for Japanese Americans. After he was arrested and convicted of defying the government’s order, he appealed his case all the way to the Supreme Court. In 1944, the Supreme Court ruled against him, arguing that the incarceration was justified due to military necessity.

In 1983, Prof. Peter Irons, a legal historian, together with researcher Aiko Herzig-Yoshinaga, discovered key documents that government intelligence agencies had hidden from the Supreme Court in 1944. The documents consistently showed that Japanese Americans had committed no acts of treason to justify mass incarceration. With this new evidence, a pro-bono legal team that included the Asian Law Caucus re-opened Korematsu’s 40-year-old case on the basis of government misconduct. On November 10, 1983, Korematsu’s conviction was overturned in a federal court in San Francisco. It was a pivotal moment in civil rights history.

Korematsu remained an activist throughout his life. In 1998, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, from President Bill Clinton. In 2010, the state of California passed the Fred Korematsu Day bill, making January 30 the first day in the U.S. named after an Asian American. Korematsu’s growing legacy continues to inspire people of all backgrounds and demonstrates the importance of speaking up to fight injustice.

Navitas Mayan Superfood Organic Cacao Powder

I bought this at the local food co-op yesterday but now I'm having my doubts about what I can use it for. Since they listed a website with recipes on the bag, I figured I'd find some recipes for using it - but every recipe uses all kinds of exotic ingredients, many of which I have never heard of.

Their description on the product page says:

Cacao is a top source of antioxidants, and it contains an abundance of magnesium and iron. To make our cacao powder, the finest cacao beans are milled at low temperature to protect the nutrients and flavor. Our cacao powder is a healthy alternative to conventional over-processed “cocoa” used for baking, hot chocolate, desserts and smoothies.

Since they are stressing the "superfood" aspects of the product, most of their recipes seem to be no-bake so the nutritional value is not affected.

I'm used to Hershey's cocoa and particularly like their special dark variety. I bought the Navitas cacao since I wanted to branch out to other varieties of cocoa/cacao. Hershey's cocoa says that both varieties they sell are 100% cacao so I suspect the products would work the same with maybe some difference in taste. I've only ever used cocoa in cooked recipes so I am wondering about the no-bake things.

My question is - can I use this Navitas cacao like I would regular cocoa?

Doctor Who Quote About 'Alternative Facts' Sounds Awfully Relatable 40 Years Later

Doctor Who Quote About 'Alternative Facts' Sounds Awfully Relatable 40 Years Later
Beth Elderkin
Sunday 4:35pm

Forty years ago today, Doctor Who aired an episode where the Doctor cautioned his soon-to-be companion Leela all about the dangers of people altering facts to “fit their views.” Huh, now where does that sound familiar?

It’s the 40th anniversary of the classic Doctor Who episode “The Face of Evil Part 4.” The episode, which aired January 22, 1977, is all about the Doctor trying to make peace between two warring tribes, the primitive Sevateem and the technically brilliant Tesh. After Xoanon, a computer who the Sevateem worship as a god, takes control of Leela’s mind, the Doctor breaks her trance through hypnosis. But not before reminding her, and the audience, how hard some people work to convince themselves or others that there are five lights.

“You know, the very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common,” the Doctor said. “They don’t alter their views to fit the facts. They alter the facts to fit their views.”

Rename the White House press secretary position!

Should he be called the Trump Information Officer in honor of Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf, Iraqi Minister of Information?

Or the Minister of Truth because he pushes Newspeak and shoves factual documents down memory holes?

Maybe he is the re-incarnation of Joseph Goebbels should share the title of Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda

Wormtongue, after Gríma Wormtongue who was a minion of Saruman, and worked to weaken Théoden and his kingdom through lies and persuasion.

"Voice from the sky" after the ANT-20 "Maxim Gorky" propaganda aircraft, Joseph Stalin's propaganda plane which was equipped with a powerful radio set, printing and leaflet-dropping machinery, radio stations, photographic laboratory, film projector with sound for showing movies in flight, library, etc.

Secretariat for the Congress for Cultural Freedom, the CIA anti-communist advocacy group.

Squealer, from Animal Farm – A small, white, fat porker who serves as Napoleon's second-in-command and minister of propaganda.

At March in Tallahassee - maybe exceed capacity UPDATE - 15,000 attended!

They moved the rally inside because of weather. People still coming and it's shoulder to shoulder!

The venue was maxed out - lots of people left out in the rain. Some of those marched on to the Florida Capitol Building, the original march destination.

I was seated in the balcony above the floor - we arrived early and I realized I would never make it up the hill from the starting rally point so my husband took me to the end rally point. He ended up leaving our car there, walked down the hill to the start and came back with the crowd. By the time he got there the balcony was beyond capacity and the fire marshal was stopping people from coming in. My husband got inside where I could see him - which was good since he could not hear his phone.

A little after I spotted him I was maxed out on being in a crowd (that's why I don't go to many events, I just can't take being around a lot of people for long). Since we could not hear the speeches we decided to leave. The line of severe rain and weather was visible on the horizon so before we left we gave the cheap raincoats we had purchased for the march to two women who had to get back to their cars.

I'm not sure how many people made the march or how many were inside the building. While waiting the women at the venue told me they were expecting between 1500 and 2000. I believe the capacity for the building is only 600 people!

For photos of the event see the Florida Planned Parenthood Alliance Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/FAPPA/photos/

Thank you to all the 15,000+ people who came out today and marched in solidarity. Every one of you is amazing.

The We the People Petition page is still up!

Someone posted that the Whitehouse.gov was turned into a Trump campaign site so I checked it out. Yes, the first thing you see is an appeal to sign up for Trump updates.

Interestingly, the We the People Petition site is still up. The Obama team wiped all the petitions that had been listed while they were in charge. I'm not sure I want the Trump White House to have my email but I am tempted to start a petition asking Trump to resign because of his campaign staff apparent involvement with the Russian hacking.

Ok - I did it but I am not sure if they are actually accepting petitions. Here it is:

Donald John Trump should resign from the office of president due to campaign staff collusion with the Russians.

Several Trump campaign staff members are under investigation for possible collusion with Russian government hackers that tampered with the election process in the United States. Donald John Trump should resign in order to remove this taint from the office of the President of the United States of America. As Vice President Michael Pence was part of the same campaign, he should resign also. Since Representative Mitch McConnell repressed information about the Russian hacking prior to Election Day he should resign from his office.

While any of these people hold office in the United States government the people of this country cannot be certain that their actions are free from influence by the Russian government.

Donald John Trump and his fellow conspirators should resign immediately.
