Fake news is now a public health hazard as a false story about flu shots goes viral on Facebook

YourNewsWire, a notorious fake news site, fabricates a story that a flu shot caused a “deadly flu epidemic”

Source: Media Matters

One of the most notorious fake news websites in the United States published a fake news story that the flu shot caused people to die in a flu outbreak. The fake story has since gone viral and has been copied by multiple fake news websites, including ones based in Macedonia.

On January 15, the website, YourNewsWire, published a reckless piece headlined "CDC Doctor: ‘Disastrous’ Flu Shot Is Causing Deadly Flu Outbreak." The piece dubiously claimed an anonymous “CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] doctor” had said “this year’s ‘disastrous’ flu shot may be responsible for the deadly flu epidemic,” adding that this supposed doctor also said, “Some of the patients I’ve administered the flu shot to this year have died...I don’t care who you are, this scares the crap out of me.” In reality, the opposite is true: As fact-checker Snopes noted two days later, the CDC encourages Americans to get the flu shot and maintains that it is in fact safe. Snopes also noted that YourNewsWire “often uses fictional quotes [to] juice up the clickbait value of their stories.”

Nonetheless, the wildly irresponsible fake story has gone viral. As of the publication of this article, the fake story has received more than 176,000 Facebook engagements, according to social media analytics website BuzzSumo. The story appears to be having an impact; some of the responses to the fake story on YourNewsWire’s Facebook pages have included reactions along the lines that the story vindicated “why I have not had the flu shot since 1990.” The fake story has also been copied by multiple other fake news websites, some of which are from Macedonia, which pushed the fake story onto Facebook as well.

North, South Korea Solidify Plans to March Together at Olympics

Source: Bloomberg

North and South Korea solidified plans to march together under a unified flag at next month’s Winter Olympics and agreed to compete with a joint women’s ice hockey team in a rare show of unity amid heightened tensions about Kim Jong Un’s nuclear program.

With the games to be held in South Korea, the agreement signed Saturday offers a moment of reconciliation amid mounting tensions on the Korean peninsula involving missile tests and military exercises. North and South Korea will enter the opening ceremony in Pyeongchang under a single flag. The two nations haven’t competed as a team in 27 years.

"I’m sure it will be a very emotional moment, not just for all Koreans, but also for the entire world," said Thomas Bach, the president of the International Olympic Committee, who hailed the agreement as being in the "true Olympic spirit of respect and friendship."

Trump: Democrats want 'unchecked illegal immigration'

Source: The Hill

President Trump early Saturday charged that Democrats are at fault for the government shutdown because they want "unchecked illegal immigration."

“Democrats are holding our Military hostage over their desire to have unchecked illegal immigration,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “Can’t let that happen!”

The shutdown began at midnight after the Senate failed to pass a continuing resolution (CR) to keep the government funded.

At the center of the spending bill negotiations has been the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which Trump said last year he would rescind while providing lawmakers with time to craft a legislative fix.

Trump: Democrats gave me anniversary 'present' of government shutdown

Source: Politico

Some six hours after the federal government shut down, President Donald Trump tweeted that the Democrats had given him a “nice present” on the one-year anniversary of his inauguration.

“This is the One Year Anniversary of my Presidency and the Democrats wanted to give me a nice present. #DemocratShutdown,” he tweeted at 6:33 a.m. Saturday.

The president remains in Washington after most Democrats and a handful of Republicans late Friday night voted down a four-week extension of government funding, prompting a shutdown.

A furious blame game had pre-empted the fruitless negotiations to pass a short-term funding measure, which the president continued Saturday, tweeting: “Democrats are far more concerned with Illegal Immigrants than they are with our great Military or Safety at our dangerous Southern Border. They could have easily made a deal but decided to play Shutdown politics instead. #WeNeedMoreRepublicansIn18 in order to power through mess!”

Treasury releases filing-season shutdown plan for IRS

Source: The Hill

The Treasury Department has released an updated shutdown plan for the IRS to reflect the fact that the potential upcoming funding lapse would occur during the filing season.

Under the plan, 43.5 percent of IRS workers are authorized to continue working if a shutdown occurs, compared to 13.4 percent outside of the filing season. The IRS officially opens the 2018 filing season on Jan. 29, but the plan describes the filing-season period as Jan. 1 through April 30.

Employees would continue tasks during a shutdown that include testing of filing-year programs, processing paper tax returns and printing forms, according to the plan. Thousands of customer-service representatives will also still be authorized to work.

Employees that issue refunds and conduct audits would generally be furloughed, according to the plan.

Trump admin settles on facility for Jerusalem embassy, plans to move as early as next year

Source: CNN

(CNN)The Trump administration has settled on a location for the new US embassy in Jerusalem and plans to move into the facility by 2019, two senior administration officials tell CNN.

Rather than design and build a new embassy compound, which officials say could take several years and cost as much as a billion dollars, the State Department has decided to retrofit an existing US consular facility in the West Jerusalem neighborhood of Arnona, which sits near the Green Line, the de facto border of Israel before the 1967 war.

The scaled-down plan for the embassy will cut costs and allow Ambassador David Friedman and his staff to move there as early as next year after some security enhancements are made.

The current facility at the site is the US Consulate in Jerusalem, which handles relations with the Palestinians; the United States does not have a consular office in Ramallah.

Comey to teach ethical leadership course at College of William & Mary

Source: Politico

Former FBI Director James Comey is joining the faculty at his alma mater, the College of William & Mary, and will teach a course on ethical leadership starting this fall, the school announced Friday morning.

“I am thrilled to have the chance to engage with William & Mary students about a vital topic — ethical leadership,” Comey said in a statement. “Ethical leaders lead by seeing above the short term, above the urgent or the partisan, and with a higher loyalty to lasting values, most importantly to the truth.”

“Building and maintaining that kind of leadership, in both the private sector and government, is the challenge of our time,” Comey said. “There is no better place to teach and learn about it than the W&M Washington Program.”

Comey was dismissed from his role at the FBI in May 2017, at the start of an investigation into the possible collusion between the Trump administration and Russia to interfere with the 2016 presidential election. The Russia probe is now spearheaded by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Omarosa may have secretly taped White House conversations: report

Source: The Hill

Former Trump staffer Omarosa Manigault-Newman might have secretly recorded private conversations in the White House as she feared involvement in special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe, The New York Daily News reported Friday.

Sources told the Daily News that Manigault-Newman, who was abruptly fired from the White House late last year, “loves” to record meetings.

“Everyone knows Omarosa loves to record people and meetings using the voice notes app on her iPhone,” one source said. “Don’t be surprised if she has secret audio files on everyone in that White House, past and present staffers included.”

The White House’s recent ban on staffers having their personal cell phones was tied to Manigault-Newman’s habit of recording her conversations, the source told the Daily News.
