Berlin players support NFL protests before Bundesliga game

Source: ESPN

BERLIN -- Hertha Berlin players and officials kneeled in solidarity with the recent NFL protests ahead of their Bundesliga match against Schalke on Saturday.

A number of NFL players have "taken a knee" in recent months and German club Hertha showed solidarity for the ongoing protests in the United States before their game on Saturday.

"Berlin is colourful," the Hertha stadium announcer told the fans in attendance. "Hertha BSC stands for diversity and against violence.

"For this reason, we are joining forces with the protest of our fellow American athletes to take a stand against discrimination.

Field of Vision - A Night at the Garden

In 1939, New York's Madison Square Garden was host to an enormous—and shocking—gathering of 22,000 Americans that has largely been forgotten from our history.

Baltimore middle-schoolers viral rendition of Rise Up helps soothe a troubled nation

Source: Washington Post

Nothing seemed out of the ordinary for 11-year-old Kai Young as he arrived for a morning choir rehearsal at Cardinal Shehan School in Baltimore late last month.

He mingled with friends, suppressed any nerves he had about singing his solo and let out a voice that would eventually be heard by millions, even if he had no idea at the time. Young was simply singing because that’s what he loves to do.

Over the course of just a few weeks, Young and his school’s choir have appeared on television stations, courted countless media requests and gone viral for their uplifting performance of “Rise Up” by American singer and songwriter Andra Day.

And it all started when Kenyatta Hardison, the choir director, decided to record her students’ progress on a Facebook Live video for the kids’ parents.

Trump: My presidency is 'substantially ahead of schedule'

Source: Politico

President Donald Trump on Friday pledged to an adoring crowd of evangelicals his commitment to religious liberty, as he declared that his administration was “substantially ahead of schedule” in delivering on campaign promises.

Speaking at the Values Voter Summit, Trump boasted about “tremendous strides” against ISIS and his plan to decertify the Iran nuclear deal, while saying he hoped to give Americans a Christmas gift of tax reform and to deliver on scrapping Obamacare, after multiple failed repeal efforts.

"We're taking a little different route than we had hoped because getting Congress — they've forgotten what their pledges were," Trump said, referring to multiple plans he's rolled out in the past 24 hours to undermine the health care law. "So we're going a little different route, but you know what, in the end it will be just as effective and maybe it will even be better."

Trump, who received standing ovations throughout his speech, promised to restore "moral clarity" to the United States' view of the world, as he touted his success in office.

Gerrymonstered (Mike Thompson):

Source: Freep

He served as vice president of the United States and as governor of Massachusetts, but Elbridge Gerry is most remembered as the man whose name is memorialized in the ghoulish practice of distorting electoral district boundaries to give one party an advantage: gerrymandering.

The legislative map Gerry signed into law in 1812 created an especially contorted district that to cartoonist Elkanah Tisdale resembled a frightening-looking salamander. Gerry’s political opponents dubbed it the gerry-mander, a term that has since been used to describe any district configured to tip the scales in one party’s favor. In the spirit of the original drawing, I’ve reimagined the 14 districts in Michigan’s convoluted electoral map as monsters.

Federal law mandates that every congressional district contain roughly the same number of residents. But it’s up to each state to reconfigure its own district lines after every Census. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court heard arguments in a gerrymandering case that could invalidate Wisconsin’s political map and have repercussions across the country.

In Michigan, the party that controls the state Legislature has historically used its map-making power to pack the opposing party’s voters into the fewest possible districts and distribute its own voters as advantageously as possible among the rest. This is most noticeable in metro Detroit. The map Michigan’s Republican legislative majority drew after the 2010 Census has allowed the GOP to maintain a 9-5 advantage in Congress even when Democratic congressional candidates get more votes statewide.

Bernie Sanders coming to Detroit to deliver opening-night speech at Women's Convention

Source: The Detroit Free Press

The Women's Convention will feel the Bern later this month, when Bernie Sanders visits Detroit to address more than 3,000 women and progressive activists as they get ready for the 2018 midterm elections.

The senator from Vermont, an independent who challenged Hillary Clinton for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination, is to address the crowd the evening of Oct. 27, on the first day of a three-day convention organized by the Women's March.

...

He was the right choice to be a headliner for the first national Women's Convention in 40 years, said Tamika Mallory, co-founder of Women's March, because Sanders knows how to mobilize a new generation of activists.

"I think that right now, no one can deny that Bernie Sanders is probably one of the most powerful U.S. senators ... on progressive issues, women’s issues, mobilizing millennials. He is really in line with the principles of the Women's March," Mallory told the Free Press in an exclusive interview Wednesday night.

Watch Mexican Soccer Team Honor Frida the Rescue Dog in Emotional Ceremony

Source: Slate

Mexican rescue dog Frida is acknowledged for its job looking for victims of the last earthquake before the start of the World Cup 2018 qualifier football match Mexico vs Trinidad & Tobago at the Alfonso Lastras stadium in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, on October 6, 2017.

Mexico may have beaten Trinidad and Tobago in a World Cup qualifying match on Friday night but it’s clear that the star of the night was rescue dog Frida, who became famous across the country and around the world for her assistance in the earthquake relief efforts. Before the game, the Mexican team celebrated first responders in an emotional pre-match ceremony that included a moment of silence, the national anthem, and fists raised in solidarity.

Mexican players handed shirts to representatives of the rescue workers, Red Cross, and armed forces, but the crowd really went wild when Frida walked onto the pitch, wearing her now-signature protective goggles, boots, and vest. The crowd broke out into chanting, “olé, olé, olé, olé, Frida, Frida.”
