Infowars one strike away from YouTube ban

Source: The Hill

Conspiracy theory outlet Infowars is one strike away from being banned from YouTube.

The channel said it received an alert from YouTube on Tuesday morning, saying Infowars received a second strike on a video about the Parkland, Fla. high school shooting and will temporarily be unable to upload new content.

"This is the second strike applied to your account within three months. As a result, you're unable to post new content to YouTube for two weeks," the alert said. "If there are no further issues, the ability to upload will be automatically restored after this two week period."

Infowars's second strike comes as social media giants like YouTube and Twitter grapple with how to handle extremist or conspiracy theory content.

NSA chief says Trump hasn't told him to confront Russian cyber threat

Source: CNN

Washington (CNN)US Cyber Command chief Adm. Mike Rogers told lawmakers on Tuesday that he has not been granted the authority by President Donald Trump to disrupt Russian election hacking operations where they originate.

Asked by Democratic Sen. Jack Reed if he has been directed by the President, through the defense secretary, to confront Russian cyber operators, Rogers said "no I have not" but noted that he has tried to work within the authority he maintains as a commander.

While he did not agree with Reed's characterization that the US has been "sitting back and waiting," Rogers admitted that it is fair to say that "we have not opted to engage in some of the same behaviors we are seeing" with regards to Russia.

"It has not changed the calculus or the behavior on behalf of the Russians," Rogers said about the US response to Russia's cyber threat to date.

Trump to announce reelection bid for 2020

Source: The Hill

President Trump will announce this week that he plans to run for reelection in 2020.

Conservative news aggregator Matt Drudge made the announcement Tuesday on his website.

The president plans to tap his former digital adviser Brad Parscale, who is presently spearheading a pro-Trump outside group called America First Policies, as his campaign manager, Drudge reported.

Trump's decision to run for reelection is not a surprise. He's repeatedly talked about being president for eight years and he filed paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission in January for his reelection committee.

Captivating Video Shows Flooded Park Submerged in Crystal Clear Water

Earlier this month, a hiking trail in Brazil's Recanto Ecológico Rio de la Prata (“Natural River Park”) flooded due to unusually heavy rains. While most outdoor sites in this situation would turn into a muddy mess, crystal clear river overflow transformed the path and its surroundings into an enchanting underwater wonderland.

As the rain poured on February 2, two nearby rivers—the Rio da Prata and the Olho D'Água—overflowed into the Recanto Ecológico Rio de la Plata's rainforest. Waldemilson Vera, a park guide, captured mesmerizing footage of the flood as it submerged towering trees, tropical plants, and a wooden walkway in sparkling water.

Major EPA reorganization will end science research program

Source: The Hill

A federal environmental program that distributes grants to test the effects of chemical exposure on adults and children is being shuttered amidst a major organization consolidation at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The National Center for Environmental Research (NCER) will no longer exist following plans to combine three EPA offices, the agency confirmed to The Hill Monday.

The program provides millions of dollars in grants each year.

Perhaps best known for its handling of fellowships that study the effects of chemicals on children’s health, NCER will be dissolved and science staff serving there will be reassigned elsewhere within the department, EPA said.

Woman jailed for contempt of court after outburst at sentencing of grandfather who abused 6-year-old

Source: Des Moines Register

A woman spent the weekend in jail for contempt of court after being escorted out of a Hardin County courtroom Friday following an outburst at the judge.

District Court Judge James McGlynn said in an order that Audra Morgan, 35, of Alden, "created a willful disturbance calculated to interrupt the due course of the sentencing proceedings."

Morgan was escorted out of the courtroom and detained by deputies Friday after shouting profanities at McGlynn during the sentencing of Dean E. Hilpipre.

Her outburst came as McGlynn announced he would accept a plea deal and sentence Hilpipre, 61, to probation for the charge of lascivious acts with a child.

Hilpipre admitted to molesting his then 6-year-old granddaughter and the news that he could avoid prison through a plea deal attracted widespread anger. McGlynn acknowledged receiving letters and emails from supporters of the victim urging him to change his mind and send Hilpipre to prison, but he said he could not ethically take outside influences into consideration in his sentencing.

Netflixs First Arabic Original Series Will Be a Supernatural Teen Drama Called Jinn

Source: The Mary Sue

Netflix just announced its first Arabic original series, and it’s a young adult fantasy adventure! The six-episode series will comes from Lebanese director Mir-Jean Bou Chaaya (Very Big Shot) and Jordanian screenwriter Bassel Ghandour (Oscar-nominated Theeb), and Elan and Rajeev Dassani (SEAM) will serve as executive producers. Netflix says the series “will feature Middle Eastern talent,” and it will film in Jordan later this year.

Described as “a contemporary supernatural teenage drama,” Jinn will focus on a group of teenagers whose lives are “disrupted when a Jinn in the form of a teenage boy appears to them in the ancient city of Petra. Their friendships and young romances are tested when they set out to stop an even greater darkness that is threatening to destroy the world. Can they come together in time, and find the answers needed, in order to save everything?”

Meanwhile, the series summary on Netflix more specifically seems to suggest a female protagonist: “When a girl accidentally releases a jinn in the form of a teenage boy, they learn that they’ve also unleashed an ancient darkness that threatens the world.” Fingers crossed!

“It is very common in Middle East that people know someone who has a Jinn story,” said screenwriter Ghandour, “so it’s nice to take that and turn it into a fun and mysterious teen adventure that everyone can enjoy. On a broader note, I love that Netflix is investing a lot in the region, it’s a real turning point. We have such a rich storytelling culture, and we’ll finally be able to enjoy Arabic content with Netflix quality.”
