Volunteers In Texas Are Saving Thousands Of Cold-Stunned Sea Turtles From The Storm

Volunteers in coastal Texas have rescued thousands of sea turtles from frigid waters and shores during the historic winter storm and are working creatively to house them as much of the region remains without power.

Sea Turtle, Inc., a nonprofit education, rehabilitation and conservation organization in South Padre Island, Texas, has taken in nearly 4,500 sea turtles since Sunday, according to Executive Director Wendy Knight. She told NPR that local volunteers have been retrieving the turtles by boat and on foot and that the organization has been able to accommodate them with assistance from the community, including from the local government and SpaceX, which has a launch site nearby.

"The love and support of people who just want to help things that can't help themselves is overwhelming," Knight said.

As of Wednesday morning, Knight said, the floor of Sea Turtle, Inc.'s facility was covered in bins containing some 500 rescues. The city's Convention and Visitors Bureau donated the use of the South Padre Island Convention Centre, which Knight said is currently housing the other approximately 4,000 in a combination of tarps, kiddie pools and boxes "lined up tip to toe."

Sen. Shirkey pressured to resign - again - after more controversial remarks surface

An advocacy group is renewing its call for Michigan Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey to resign after video surfaced of the Clarklake Republican making controversial remarks to an armed, anti-Gov. Gretchen Whitmer crowd last year.

In an ominous speech at the American Patriot Rally in Grand Rapids in May 2020, Shirkey boasted that he was in possession of three weapons and encouraged the boisterous crowd to “train” and “be ready” to “test” the government.

“I came here today with three weapons — my sidearm and two weapons that are much more powerful than my sidearm,” Shirkey, holding up a Bible and U.S. Constitution, told the crowd, which included militia members. “Be prepared and continue to do your teaching and your training and be ready to do the testing of government when they get it backwards.”

The remarks came on the same month Shirkey declared Whitmer was “drunk on the addiction of unfettered power.”

AOC tweet:

Ok everyone, I need help!

A few weeks ago I told @RepRaskin that this year I wanted to adopt a vegetarian diet for Lent in memory of his son Tommy.

Jamie said, “Well you’d have to do it the way Tommy would, which means bring people along with you!”

So, I have 3 requests:

1. Does anyone want to join me? Rules are 1) No judgement 2) Make it your own (you can go full 40 days, just veggie Mondays, etc 3) Be inclusive (no need to observe Lent to join)

2. Please comment w your favorite veggie recipes below! I would like to avoid 40 days of Easy Mac

(Pro-tip... make it permanent. Seems like a pretty good idea for the environment... just saying. #GreenNewDeal)

Livonia Animal Control says homeowner leaving beagles outdoors is in compliance with state law

LIVONIA, Mich. (WXYZ) — Livonia Animal Control says its hands are tied after several residents have complained about one homeowner leaving his three beagles outdoors in frigid temperatures.

"All pet owners should be mindful of the recent bitterly cold temperatures. While most people would not treat their animal in this way, there is no law in Michigan that requires pet owners to bring their dogs inside at a certain temperature," a statement from Livonia Animal Control read.

The three beagles who protesters say are left outdoors in the homeowner's yard year-round have been checked on several times over the years, according to local animal control. They have shelter and straw insulation. The owner has also been compliant with officers.

The animal control says the dogs are "warm to the touch" when they leave out of their dog houses, and their shelters are well maintained. So in this instance, the homeowner is not breaking any laws.
