Kidnapped woman runs to gas station after year of being held hostage, NJ officials say

A woman seized the opportunity to run from her accused kidnapper and escaped into a nearby gas station — ending a “year-long nightmare,” officials in New Jersey say.

James W. Parrillo Jr., 57, held the woman hostage as they traveled across the country to New Jersey against her will, according to the state attorney general’s office.

He’s now facing charges of first-degree kidnapping, second-degree strangulation and aggravated assault, and third-degree criminal restraint after the woman initially encountered him at a gas station in New Mexico in February 2022, the office announced in a Feb. 17 news release.

Parrillo, who was arrested Feb. 7, goes by different names, and evidence shows there may be additional victims in other states, officials said.

Jill Biden to visit Namibia, Kenya, part of US-Africa push

Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — Jill Biden will visit Namibia and Kenya this week as part of a push by the United States to step up engagement with Africa as a counterweight to China’s influence on the continent, the White House announced Tuesday.

President Joe Biden told African leaders who came to Washington for a summit last year that the U.S. is “all in” on the continent’s future. He also announced that he, his wife, the vice president and several members of his Cabinet would travel to Africa this year, and joked that the leaders would get tired of hosting everyone.

Jill Biden is the third U.S. official to visit, following Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and U.S Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

The first lady will highlight issues around empowering women and young people and food insecurity in the Horn of Africa, which includes Kenya, the White House said. She will also focus on deepening U.S. relations with the two countries that are hosting her.

Hat-tip to local Fox 17 (westside of MI) with this approach to the MSU mass shooting/campus opening:

We are not approaching students on campus today. If you want to take the mic we’re at the rock. No questions. Just whatever you want to share. This shouldn’t deserve a gold star. It’s just the right thing to do.

Here to listen: FOX 17 lets Spartans share their stories

LANSING, Mich. — I'm a proud Spartan, like many others at FOX 17. I've taken classes at Berkey Hall, where two students were shot and killed only a week ago.

Berkey Hall is closed for the rest of semester, with classes there relocated.

When I returned to my alma mater on Monday, classes were the last thing on my mind. This was even more true for the students who returned to school, one week after the fatal shooting that claimed the lives of three MSU students and injured five others.

We chose not to ask questions on Monday. Instead, we waited by The Rock and propped a sign on a tripod. "This is hard," the sign read. "If you want to talk, we are here to listen."

After all, this is their story, and it should be told on their terms.

Florida woman fights off attacker inside apartment gym in terrifying video

Newly-released video showed a woman fighting off a man who attacked her inside her Tampa, Florida, apartment complex gym last month.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said Nashali Alma, 24, was exercising alone at a gym before she let the suspect, identified as Xavier Thomas-Jones, 25, inside on January 22. Alma allowed him in because she had seen him at the facility previously, according to authorities.

While Alma continued her workout, footage – which was released this week – showed Thomas-Jones in a Detroit Red Wings jersey approaching her and trying to grab her waist. She yelled and demanded he get away from her, but he continued to chase her.

At one point, Thomas-Jones was seen grabbing Alma as she kept hitting his head and pinned her to the floor, the video showed. He eventually let her go and she immediately ran out of the gym. She got in touch with authorities and deputies were able to track Thomas-Jones and arrest him in less than 24 hours, according to the sheriff's office.

Help us deliver hundreds more life-saving medical kits directly to the Ukrainian front.

A folk campaign— by the folk and for the folk.

We are a grassroots campaign with the mission of sending direct support from the people of Ohio to the people of Ukraine, via emergency medical supplies and musical performances for troops and civilians.

Who we are

Brett Hill (Brother Hill) and Benya Stewart are folk musicians from Ohio who have collaborated with Ukrainian musicians to promote traditional folk music and international cultural solidarity since 2019.

When war broke out after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, they immediately began organizing benefit shows across Ohio.

Through the generosity of Ohioans at 10 fundraising events since March 2022, the From Ohio With Love Campaign has raised over $80,000, and allocated these funds to a multitude of Ukrainian initiatives, including:
