Twitter Moment: A poetic CNN Tweet about Trump is reminding people of a bad romance novel

The president's visit to Mar-a-Lago with his family, which coincided with Robert Mueller delivering his report to the Justice Department, was the subject of a CNN story. However, it was the broadcaster's evocative language choices that raised eyebrows.

Trump says he's reversing North Korea sanctions imposed by his Treasury Department

Source: The Hill

President Trump said Friday he would reverse sanctions against North Korea that were recently announced by the Treasury Department, a surprise declaration that sparked confusion in Washington.

In a tweet, Trump wrote that “it was announced today by the U.S. Treasury that additional large scale Sanctions” would be imposed in addition to “already existing Sanctions on North Korea.”

“I have today ordered the withdrawal of those additional Sanctions!” the president added.

The Treasury Department on Thursday announced it was imposing new sanctions on two Chinese shipping companies accused of helping North Korea evade existing sanctions.

How Twitter's algorithm is amplifying extreme political rhetoric

New York (CNN Business)Imagine opening up the Twitter app on your phone and scrolling through your feed. Suddenly, you come across a hyper-partisan tweet calling Hillary Clinton the "godmother of ISIS." It's from a user you do not follow, and it's not in your feed by virtue of a retweet from a user you do follow. So how did it get there?

Over the last several months, Twitter has begun inserting what it believes to be relevant and popular tweets into the feeds of people who do not subscribe to the accounts that posted them. In other words, Twitter has started showing users tweets from accounts that are followed by those they follow. This practice is different from the promoted content paid for by advertisers, as Twitter is putting these posts into the feeds of users without being paid and without consent from users.

...

In the case of this reporter, who follows accounts on both the right and left, Twitter has displayed tweets from individuals on both sides of the political spectrum. On the right, users displayed to this reporter included Republicans like Tom Cotton, Lindsey Graham, Rick Scott, Matt Gaetz, Jim Jordan and Ronna McDaniel. On the left, users displayed to this reporter included Democrats like Nancy Pelosi, Beto O'Rourke, television pundit Lawrence O'Donnell, Chris Murphy and author Stephen King.

However, the feature also surfaced tweets from individuals further to the fringes of American politics — personalities who regularly fill their Twitter feeds with personal attacks, inflammatory political rhetoric and conspiracy theories. Such users displayed to this reporter included: James Woods, the actor with a history of incendiary political rhetoric who promotes conspiratorial views; Jeanine Pirro, the Fox News host who was recently suspended by the network for Islamophobic comments; Candace Owens, the Turning Point USA communications director who had to clarify controversial comments about Adolf Hitler; Bill Mitchell, the Twitter personality who peddles conspiracy theories and inflammatory political rhetoric; Jack Posobiec, the One America News Network host who has a history peddling conspiracy theories; "Diamond and Silk," the pro-Trump social media duo who employ inflammatory political rhetoric and pushed false claims about Facebook; and others.

Michigan will no longer fund adoption agencies that discriminate against gays

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel settled a lawsuit Friday in a case where two same sex couples sued the state for a policy allowing adoption and foster care agencies to refuse to work with members of the LGBTQ community.

The settlement requires that the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services agree to maintain non-discriminatory provisions in its foster care and adoption agency contracts. The department also agrees to enforce the non-discrimination provisions by terminating contracts with agencies that discriminate against same-sex couples or LGBTQ individuals who would otherwise qualify to become foster or adoptive parents.

In 2015, Republicans in the Michigan Legislature, voting mostly along party lines, passed a controversial bill that allowed adoption and foster care agencies to cite religious convictions when refusing to work with same sex couples who wanted to adopt a child.

Two same-sex couples filed a lawsuit in 2017 challenging the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services contract with taxpayer-funded, state-contracted foster care and adoption agencies that refuse to work with same-sex couples.

Sheriff, all her deputies and a police dog resign to protest Oklahoma jail conditions

An Oklahoma sheriff and nearly all of her staff resigned this week to protest what she says are dangerous jail conditions.

Nowata County is reeling after sheriff Terry Sue Barnett read her letter of resignation at a news conference on Monday, saying a judge "tried to bribe" her to support a jail that is unsafe for staff and prisoners.

Nowata County Judge Carl Gibson ordered Barnett and her undersheriff to a court appearance on Tuesday where he said he has an “obligation to live within a budget” and Barnett didn't respect that, ABC Tulsa reports.

Twelve members of the Nowata County Sheriff's Office staff, including all deputies, the head dispatcher and most of the jail staff, resigned with Barnett, NBC News reports. The office’s K-9 ranger even quit, signing paperwork with a paw print, Barnett said.
